Rules on the road

Thailand drives on the left and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive, including the pickups. Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas — Pattaya City is named as one in the 1969 law — 90 km/h outside them and 120 km/h on Motorway 7; signs can lower these. A camera or police fine runs to ฿1,000, usually settled at ฿500 on receipt. Seat belts apply to every passenger including the rear row, and children under six travel in a TISI-standard child seat.

Rules, tolls and roads for your 4x4 car rental in Pattaya

Thailand drives on the left, and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive. If you have only ever driven on the right, the first ten minutes matter more than the next ten days: keep left out of the delivery point, and let the traffic around you set the pace before you join a main road.

Speed limits and how they are enforced

A sign can lower any of these. The fine for speeding runs up to ฿1,000, and in practice a receipt is usually issued at ฿500. On Motorway 7 the 120 km/h limit is enforced primarily by speed cameras, and a camera fine is posted to the owner of the car — which, on a hired vehicle, is the company, not you. We re-invoice it to the driver afterwards, so keep to the signed limit rather than the flow of traffic.

Tolls on the way in and out

• Motorway 7 (Bangkok–Chonburi–Pattaya): the full Bangkok–Pattaya run costs ฿105–130, paid in cash (usually the left-hand lanes) or by M-PASS and Easy Pass in the blue lanes.
• Motorway 9 (outer Bangkok ring): links to M7 at Thap Chang Interchange, which is the route in from Don Mueang and western Bangkok; payment is M-Flow, camera-based with no barrier.
• The free alternative: Highway 34 Bang Na–Trat, then Highway 3 Sukhumvit past Bang Saen and Bang Phra — no toll at all.
• Into Pattaya: the Motorway 7 spur leaves at Mab Prachan Interchange, runs along road 3240 through Nong Prue and meets Sukhumvit at Pattaya Interchange; further south a Ban Amphoe spur drops to Na Jomtien.

Parking and the one-way loop

Beach Road and Second Road run one-way anticlockwise, so a wrong turn costs you a full loop rather than a U-turn. Children under six need a TISI-standard child seat, and below 135 cm a belt or a dedicated seat; the fine reaches ฿2,000. Everyone in the car, back row included, wears a belt.

Coastal and island runs south of the city

Koh Larn sits 7.5 km offshore and the ferry takes passengers only — a car stays parked at Bali Hai Pier, so a 4x4 buys you nothing there.

Inland routes towards Bangkok and the eastern provinces

Motorway 7 is 8 lanes at 120 km/h, and the whole Bangkok–Pattaya stretch costs ฿105–฿130 in tolls, paid in cash or with M-PASS on the blue lanes. Further east, Chanthaburi is 129 minutes and Rayong 46 minutes.

• Nong Nooch and Khao Chi Chan: 26 and 20 minutes.
• Khao Kheow Open Zoo: 44 minutes north-east; a full morning with children.
• Koh Samet via Ban Phe Pier: 62 minutes to the pier; the car waits on the mainland.
• Hua Hin: 321 km and 229 minutes; plan it as an overnight, not a loop.

What to check before a long drive

Fuel is the practical detail. Bangchak's retail figures put diesel B7 at ฿41.44 a litre, gasohol 95 at ฿39.94 and gasohol 91 at ฿39.57, with E20 at ฿34.94 — cheaper than both. Two rules catch visitors on these routes: speed limits drop to 80 km/h inside built-up areas and 90 km/h outside them, and Motorway 7 is enforced primarily by cameras, with the fine issued to the car owner — that is, to us — and re-invoiced to the renter.
