Automatic or manual

Automatic is limited to the Electric class, the Toyota Yaris and the Jeep Renegade. That is four electric cars — Fiat 500e, Peugeot e-208, Renault 5 E-Tech and Nissan Leaf, all automatic — plus the Toyota Yaris, the only hybrid in Economy, at €15 a day and the Jeep Renegade with its 1.5 L hybrid and automatic gearbox at €34 a day. Everything else on this page is manual, including the two Crossovers with a manual stick, the Kia Stonic and Jeep Avenger. Drivers who have only ever used an automatic should test a manual on a quiet street before committing to 30 days of city traffic.

Petrol, hybrid or electric

• Petrol: the bulk of the fleet, from the 1.0 L Ford Fiesta at €13 a day to the 1.2 L Opel Corsa and Jeep Avenger at €20 and €34.
• Hybrid: two cars only — the Toyota Yaris in Economy at €15 a day and the Jeep Renegade Crossover at €34.

• Mandatory third-party cover: Spanish law requires compulsory civil liability insurance on every car legally on the road, and it is included by default — it covers injury and damage to third parties, not the driver and not the car itself.

Cover and options beyond the mandatory policy

The compulsory policy is only the floor. On the road, Spain's general limits apply to every car we hand over: 120 km/h on autopista and autovía, 90 km/h on a conventional country road, and 30 km/h on a city street with one lane in each direction. Fines for speeding run from 100 EUR to 600 EUR depending on the limit and how far over it you were, with a 50% reduction if paid within 20 calendar days.

Documents, licence and insurance for a monthly car rental in Valencia

A month on the road means the paperwork matters more than on a weekend hire: the same documents stay with you for four weeks, and the insurance question comes up again every time you park. Here is what Spanish rules require from a driver, and what a monthly hire asks for before the keys are handed over.

Licence and documents

An EU or EEA licence — including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway — is valid in Spain exactly as it is, for as long as it has not expired. A licence from outside the EEA is accepted too, provided three things hold: the licence is still valid, the holder is old enough for the equivalent Spanish category, and no more than six months have passed since they took up ordinary residence in Spain. A licence not written in Spanish is valid either with an official certified translation into Spanish, or if it was issued on the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention. The DGT recommends getting an International Driving Permit before the trip: it is valid for one year and is shown only together with your passport and your national licence, never on its own. Cyrillic, Arabic and character-based licences fall under the same rule, which in practice means an IDP or a certified translation.

• Permiso Internacional de Conducción: the Spanish name for the IDP — a grey triptych booklet of 16 pages in Spanish, German, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic and Russian.
• Bank card: which cards are accepted for the deposit is agreed when booking.
• Minimum age and driving experience: you may drive in Spain from 18 (category B), but the minimum age for hire and any young-driver surcharge are agreed when booking.

Insurance, excess and the deposit

Third-party liability insurance, the Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil, is part of every hire by Spanish law and applies even if the person driving was not named in the agreement. It covers harm to others, not the driver and not the car; the legal limits are €70,000,000 per incident for personal injury, however many people are hurt, and €15,000,000 per incident for property damage. On top of that sit the optional waivers. CDW removes your liability for damage to the car itself after a collision with another vehicle or an object, except for the excess; vandalism is excluded unless it happened while the car was in use. THW covers total or partial theft and vandalism, again minus the excess.

What to check on the paperwork

• The excess: it is printed in the agreement, and its size depends on the car class and the company, so read the figure rather than assume it.
• The declared price: the full obligatory cover and any young-driver surcharge must be inside the quoted price, not added afterwards.
• The condition report: every scratch and dent has to be written into the agreement or the inspection sheet before you drive off, signed by both sides, with a copy for you — otherwise the damage comes back to you.
• A substitute car: if the model you booked is not there, you may ask for another car at no extra cost, even a class above; if you are given a lower class, the price should come down, and if the car does not match the agreement you may cancel and get the prepayment back.
• Our side of it: we supply the car clean and with a full tank, and ask for it back with a full tank — full-to-full; the missing fuel and a refuelling fee are then charged as set out in the rental agreement.

Driving and parking a monthly rental car in Valencia

A month behind the wheel here means learning three local rules fast: the ZBE low-emission zone, the paid parking rings, and the speed cameras on the V-21 and V-30. Below is what to know before you take the keys.

The ZBE València low-emission zone

Cars with Spanish plates and a DGT environmental sticker — B, C, ECO or 0 — are not restricted by ZBE València; the ordinance targets only category A vehicles, petrol registered before 2001 and diesel before 2006. The zone covers 27.8 km² inside Ronda Nord, the avenidas de Tarongers and Serradora, and Bulevard Sud, and runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Parking: zona azul, zona naranja and the 2-hour cap

• Zona azul centro (Ciutat Vella, L'Eixample, Extramurs): 1.00 EUR for 60 minutes, 1.70 EUR for 120 minutes, 2-hour maximum.
• Zona azul resto ciudad: 0.80 EUR for 60 minutes, 1.50 EUR for 120 minutes, same 2-hour cap.
• Zona naranja (mixed resident and rotation): non-residents pay 2.10 EUR for 60 minutes, 3.30 EUR for 120 minutes, only during rotation hours.
• Zona verde: residents with a permit only — a monthly renter cannot use it.
• Hours: zona azul runs Monday to Saturday, 09:00–14:00 and 16:00–20:00; zona naranja rotation hours vary by district, with Saturday 09:00–15:00 everywhere.
• Payment: ElParking (operated by EYSA) and Telpark, both app-based.

Speed limits, cameras and fuel

Built-up streets run at 30 km/h where there is one lane each way, 50 km/h with two or more, and 20 km/h on single-platform streets; autopista and autovía are 120 km/h, ordinary out-of-town roads 90 km/h. Static radars sit on the V-21 (acceso a Valencia) and the V-30 (vía rápida urbana), and the AP-7 towards Dénia, Calpe, Benidorm and Peñíscola has been toll-free since 01.01.2020. Gasolina 95 E5 averaged 1.978 EUR per litre across 62 stations in the municipality.
