MG Rental Prices and Longer Bookings
MG car rental on Koh Samui is priced per day, and longer bookings are charged by a fixed multiplier rather than a separate discount scheme. We rent two electric cars, and the rate card below is the whole of it: ฿1,000 or ฿1,100 a day depending on the model, with weekly and monthly rates that bring the per-day cost down.

Both cars follow the same structure: the weekly rate is the daily rate multiplied by 6, and the monthly rate is the daily rate multiplied by 21, so the longer you keep the car the less each day costs. On the MG 4 Electric that works out at ฿1,000 a day, ฿6,000 a week and ฿21,000 a month; on the MG ZS EV, ฿1,100, ฿6,600 and ฿23,100 on the same multipliers.

The ring road and where the MG takes you
The 51 km ring road connects the lowland and the coast, and every resort sits on it. Beach and jungle tracks are off limits under the rental agreement, so plan stops at the roadside viewpoints rather than driving onto sand.
What to expect from the surface
- No divider: the ring road has no central divider, so keep left and treat every bend as a possible oncoming car.
- Potholes: patches of the surface are broken and occasionally deep.
- Flooding: after heavy rain, low sections hold water; slow down and check depth before entering.
- Animals: animals wander onto the road.
Documents and Rules for MG Rental in Koh Samui
An MG rented on Koh Samui runs on the same paperwork as any other car on the island, and the rules are Thai ones. Three documents travel with the driver, the traffic keeps left, and the agreement itself is a controlled contract.
What a foreign driver needs to carry
- Passport: the original, carried on you rather than left in the room — it is the identity document behind the rental agreement.
- International Driving Permit: the 1949 Geneva Convention booklet, issued alongside the home licence; Thai law under section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act expects both together.
- ASEAN nationals: a national licence from an ASEAN member state is enough on its own, with no permit booklet.
- Bank card in the main driver's name: used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the rental agreement.
Driving without the permit is a ฿500–1,000 fine at the roadside, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an accident — which is the part that actually costs money.
The car itself and the rules of the road
Both the MG 4 Electric and the MG ZS EV are registered and insured, and compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) is attached to the car and covers injury to third parties. First-class cover for damage to the car is arranged, and its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. A square blue tax sticker sits on the windscreen with the year in the Buddhist calendar — Gregorian plus 543 — and it has to be current. Seatbelts are worn by every passenger, including the rear row, and children under 6 need a TISI-standard child seat; below 135 cm the belt or a special seat is required, with a fine up to ฿2,000. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is not allowed.
Age, licence history and what the agreement covers
The minimum driver age is 21, and the conditions for drivers under 25 are set out in the rental agreement. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement in Thailand is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and every fee and penalty is disclosed inside it. Where a condition is not fixed on this page — the security hold amount, the excess, a delivery fee — it is agreed when booking and written into the agreement.

- Security hold: the card in the main driver's name is used for the hold; the amount is set out in the agreement.
The minimum driver age is 21, and conditions for drivers under 25 are set out in the agreement. Hire is available from 1 day, so a two-night stop on the island is enough to take an MG. Weekly and monthly rates work out lower per day than the daily rate — weekly at daily × 6, monthly at daily × 21 — which is how our longer bookings are priced.

What the monthly rainfall figures mean for a booking
- Dry season, February–April: The cleanest stretch of the year — February 64.3 mm over 4.3 rain days, April 82.9 mm over 6.1, March 115.8 mm over 4.7.
- Mid-year, May–September: Steady but manageable — May 131.6 mm, June 133.6, July 117.0, August 102.2, September 117.5, each over 10–11 rain days.
- Peak wet, October–December: October 294.9 mm over 15.8 rain days, November 444.6 mm over 16.5, December 263.1 mm over 11.6.
- Mid-October to early December: The heaviest rain of the year, when low-lying stretches of road flood and the asphalt turns slippery.
- July and August: These are not monsoon months on Samui — they sit inside the island's summer demand season.
Shoulder months and what they do to the driving
The wet season changes the road more than it changes the car. What it does not change is the traffic: the road stays two lanes with no central divider, and Thai law keeps everyone on the left in a right-hand-drive car whatever the weather.
If your dates fall in October or November, plan shorter hops between Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut rather than a full lap of the island in one go, and leave a margin for a slow, wet section.
Booking around the high season
High season for rentals runs 20 December – 31 March, with the low season from 1 April to 19 December. The delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed, and that conversation is worth having earlier rather than later if you are travelling over the New Year period.
