The paperwork for crossovers is short but strict: a passport, your home driving licence, an International Driving Permit unless you hold an ASEAN licence, and a bank card in the main driver's name. Licence, passport and bank card

• Passport: the main driver's passport is checked at handover; the name must match the driving licence and the bank card exactly.
• Home driving licence: a full licence from your country of residence, valid for the whole hire period and held for at least a year.
• International Driving Permit: required under the 1949 Geneva Convention and section 42 bis of the Thai Motor Vehicle Act; citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence instead.
• Bank card: a card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the agreement, not quoted here.
• Age: the minimum driver age is 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement.

Driving without a permit is not a paperwork formality — the police fine is ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an accident. In our practice, the permit is the single document foreign visitors most often leave at home, and no manager can fix that at the kerb. Apply for it before you fly: the terms are set out in the rental agreement.

Insurance that comes with the car

Compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, covers injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car in the country. First-class (Class 1) insurance covers damage to the car itself; its terms and the excess are set out in the agreement, so read that clause before you sign rather than after an incident.

Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter — an unpaid fine blocks the renewal of the vehicle's registration, so we pass it on as soon as it arrives. Since 30 December 2025 a car hire agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and every fee and penalty is disclosed in it. Prices already include VAT 7%, and the weekly and monthly rates are simply the daily rate multiplied — six days for a week, twenty-one for a month — so the per-day cost drops the longer you keep the car. The agreement itself is written in Thai and, as an OCPB-controlled contract, discloses every fee and penalty in it. In our experience the handover takes the longest when a driver arrives without the permit, so we ask for the documents before the car is dispatched.
