Crossover car rental in Toronto
A week of errands, airport runs and weekend escapes around the GTA is easier when the keys are in your hand from day one: we deliver a crossover to your door, and the booking is agreed with a manager beforehand. Our Toronto crossover fleet holds 15 cars, from the Buick Encore at C$ 49 a day up to the Honda HR-V at C$ 167, all five-seat petrol automatics.
Crossover car rental in Toronto and what the fleet covers
Our crossover fleet runs on 15 vehicles from 12 brands, every one a five-seat petrol automatic, with daily rates from C$ 49 to C$ 167. That spread covers a lot of ground: a city runabout and a 200 hp all-wheel-drive Jeep sit on the same page.

All-wheel drive appears on four models only — Crosstrek, Seltos, Bronco Sport and Compass — so a winter trip out of the city needs one of those booked ahead.
What every crossover on this page shares
- Seats: five in every model, from the C$ 49 Buick Encore up to the C$ 167 Honda HR-V.
- Fuel: petrol only, regular grade, which at about C$ 1.75 a litre in October 2026 keeps a fill-up predictable.
- Gearbox: automatic across all 15 cars, with no manual option to request or avoid.
- Booking: the delivery address, date and time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed, and the car arrives clean with a full tank.
Engine size spans 1.0–2.0 L and output 121–200 hp, so the smaller-engined models such as the EcoSport and Venue suit city driving, while the 2.0 L Jeep Compass and Toyota Corolla Cross hold highway speed with a full load. Anyone heading to Blue Mountain or Muskoka in winter should start from the four all-wheel-drive models and work down from there, because front-wheel drive on a slushy 400-series highway is the wrong tool for the day. Weekly bookings start at C$ 294 and monthly at C$ 1,029, both calculated from the daily rate of the car you choose.
Picking a crossover car rental in Toronto by trip and drive type
Which half suits you depends on how many people travel, how much luggage goes in the boot, and whether the trip leaves the city on a highway or stays on downtown streets.
The step up is not about seats — every car on this page is a five-seater — but about the boot and the cabin.
When all-wheel drive matters on a crossover car rental in Toronto
Subaru Crosstrek: 2.0 L, 152 hp, all-wheel drive — the default pick for a winter weekend out of the city.
Winter tyres are not mandatory in Ontario, but they are in Quebec from 1 December to 15 March for Quebec-registered cars, with a C$ 200–300 fine.
How crossover car rental in Toronto is booked and delivered
The delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed.
Where the car can be delivered
- Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ): the downtown-adjacent field, useful when the trip starts and ends inside the core.
- John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM): covered for guests flying into the western side of the region.
- Union Station, Downtown, Mississauga, North York, Scarborough and Vaughan: all inside the delivery area, so a hotel, an office or a home address works.
- Anywhere else: arranged case by case and not promised on the site.
What is agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed
The delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager, and only then is the reservation confirmed. The deposit, the insurance excess, the delivery fees and any discount sit in the rental agreement, so read that document rather than expecting a figure up front. The same applies to the minimum rental age, the young-driver surcharge, the cards accepted and the territory limit — those are settled when booking, not published as a rate. Rent-Trip's side of it is simple: we hand over a clean crossover with a full tank at the address you named.
The full-to-full fuel rule
The car comes with a full tank and must go back with a full tank. Anything less means the missing fuel plus a refuelling service fee, both as set out in the rental agreement. There is no pre-paid tank option and no full-to-empty arrangement — full-to-full is the only fuel policy on this page.
Documents and driving rules to have ready
- Licence: a visitor to Ontario for less than 3 months drives on a valid licence from their own province, state or country.
- International Driver's Permit: anyone visiting from another country for more than 3 months needs an IDP from their own country — it cannot be obtained in Canada.
- Insurance and ownership: the driver must carry insurance for the car and the original or an exact copy of the ownership permit.
Ontario's minimum driving age is 16. Alcohol is a criminal matter from 0.08, while the 0.05–0.079 warn range brings an immediate 7-day licence suspension, an 8-hour course and a fine for a first offence; drivers 21 and under, and holders of G1 or G2, are at zero. Speed limits are posted per section, with 110 km/h on selected stretches of provincial highway rather than everywhere.
Documents and rules for crossover car rental in Toronto
Driving on a foreign licence
- Visiting under 3 months: you drive on a valid driver's licence from your own province, state or country, and no Ontario permit is needed.
- Visiting over 3 months: you need an International Driver's Permit (IDP) from your own country — it cannot be obtained in Canada, so sort it before you fly.
- Insurance and registration: the driver must carry insurance for the car and keep the original or an exact copy of the ownership permit in the vehicle.
- Minimum age by law: 16. The age at which we hand over a crossover, and any young-driver surcharge, are agreed when booking.
Alcohol, speed and the winter tyre question
Ontario treats alcohol behind the wheel criminally from 0.08 (80 mg per 100 ml of blood). Between 0.05 and 0.079 — the warn range — a first occurrence brings an immediate 7-day licence suspension, an 8-hour course and a C$ 250 fine. Drivers aged 21 and under, and holders of G1 or G2 licences, must show zero.
Read the signs rather than assuming.
Winter tyres are not mandatory in Ontario. They are mandatory in Quebec from 1 December to 15 March for Quebec-registered cars, rental cars included, with a C$ 200–300 fine — cars plated in other provinces are outside that rule.
Tolls, crossings and who settles what
For light vehicles the rate runs from 49.93¢ to 119.21¢ per km depending on zone and time of entry, plus a C$ 1 trip toll charge; without a transponder there is a camera charge of C$ 5.30 per trip and a C$ 5 monthly account fee.
Taking the car into the United States is possible for most vehicles rented in Canada, but only with permission from the specific rental location — restrictions apply to some classes — and without written permission the crossing breaches both the agreement and the insurance. Carry your passport at the border.
Who pays road charges, tolls and any penalty notice on a rental car is not fixed by these rules: it is agreed when booking. The same goes for the deposit, the insurance excess and delivery fees — all set out in the rental agreement, so read that document instead of expecting a figure up front.
What a crossover car rental in Toronto costs over a week or a month
Daily rates across the 15 crossovers run from C$ 49 to C$ 167, and the longer you keep the car the less each day works out: a week is charged at six daily rates and a month at twenty-one. On the cheapest model that puts a week from C$ 294 and a month from C$ 1,029.
The spread inside the class is wide — nearly three and a half times between the Buick Encore at the bottom and the Honda HR-V at the top — so the length of the booking changes the total far more than most people expect.
- Weekly rate: six daily rates for seven days, so a C$ 49 crossover starts at C$ 294 and a C$ 167 one at C$ 1,002.
- Monthly rate: twenty-one daily rates for thirty days, which puts the entry model at C$ 1,029 and the top of the range at C$ 3,507.
- What moves the figure: the model you pick, the length of the booking, and the delivery and paperwork terms set out in the rental agreement.
- What does not: fuel. The car leaves with a full tank and comes back full, so you pay for petrol at the pump, not to us.
Highway 407 ETR is fully electronic, with no booths: light vehicles pay from 49.93¢ to 119.21¢ a kilometre depending on zone and time of entry, plus a C$ 1 trip toll charge. Without a transponder the camera charge is C$ 5.30 per trip and C$ 5 a month as an account fee. Who covers road charges, tolls and any penalty notice on a hired car is agreed when booking — it is not something we state up front, so raise it with the manager if your route uses the 407.
Step up only if you need all-wheel drive — the Crosstrek, Seltos, Bronco Sport and Compass are the four that have it — or if the drive is mostly highway with a full load, where the 2.0 L engines hold speed more comfortably.
Common mistakes with crossover car rental in Toronto
- Assuming every crossover has all-wheel drive: only the Crosstrek, Seltos, Bronco Sport and Compass do; the other eleven are front-wheel drive.
- Leaving the IDP to the last week: an International Driver's Permit comes from your own country's motoring authority, not from Canada, so the lead time is out of our hands.
- Returning the tank short: the car goes out full and must come back full, otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee apply as set out in the rental agreement.
- Treating the daily rate as the final figure: the deposit, the insurance excess, delivery fees and any discount sit in the rental agreement, not in the headline number.
Winter tyres are not mandatory in Ontario, but they are in Quebec from 1 December to 15 March for Quebec-registered cars, rental cars included, with a C$ 200–300 fine — and a car plated elsewhere is outside that rule. If a ski weekend at Blue Mountain is on the plan, raise the tyre question when booking rather than at the roadside.
Long-stay crossover car rental in Toronto options
That is the whole cost structure for a long stay — the daily figure stops being the number you compare and the monthly one takes over.
For a month of city errands, a compact body is the sensible default.
Two practical points for a month-long crossover car rental in Toronto. First, the delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed, so a long stay is worth arranging well ahead.
Agreement checks for crossover car rental in Toronto
Read it before the booking is fixed rather than at hand-over.
- Territory limit: matters if the route crosses into the United States; most cars rented in Canada can go, but only with permission from the specific rental location, and without written permission the crossing breaches both the agreement and the insurance.
- Fuel policy: full-to-full, with no pre-paid tank and no full-to-empty option on this page.
- Road charges: who covers tolls, road charges and any penalty notice is agreed when booking, so settle it before the keys change hands.
The territory limit deserves a second look on a crossover booking.
Seasonal crossover car rental in Toronto choices
The fleet is petrol and automatic across all 15 cars, so the seasonal decision comes down to drive type and engine size rather than fuel or gearbox. Four models carry all-wheel drive — the Subaru Crosstrek, Kia Seltos, Ford Bronco Sport and Jeep Compass — and those are the ones to start from once the temperature drops.
A winter weekend out of the city is where the split matters.
Summer flips the logic.
One seasonal constant: Highway 407 ETR is fully electronic with no booths, and light vehicles pay from 49.93¢ to 119.21¢ a kilometre by zone and time of entry, plus a C$ 1 trip toll charge. Who covers that is agreed when booking, so a winter route that uses the 407 is worth raising with the manager alongside the tyre question.
