Step one: choose the model and the dates

Step two: the manager confirms the details
A manager goes through the booking with you and confirms the delivery address, the date and the time before it is fixed. This is also the point where you ask about anything the price does not already cover: a delivery fee, if any, is agreed when booking, and the security hold, the insurance terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. The delivery window matters — an evening arrival at U-Tapao and a midday arrival at Suvarnabhumi need different lead times, and it is easier to sort that out in the conversation than after the booking is locked.
Step three: documents and the agreement
Thailand keeps to the left and every car here is right-hand drive. A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention; citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence. The compulsory Por Ror Bor insurance covers injury to third parties and comes with every registered car, while Class 1 cover for damage to the car, its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it. Bring a passport, your home licence, the permit unless you hold an ASEAN licence, and a bank card in the main driver's name for the security hold.
Step four: hand-over and the return
The car comes clean with a full tank, and the delivery address, date and time you agreed are what the hand-over follows. Minimum driver age is 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so keep to the 120 km/h limit on Motorway 7 — enforcement there runs mainly through cameras.

Driving on the left, and the fine nobody plans for
An International Driving Permit is required alongside your home licence, and an insurer may refuse a claim without one — so the permit is not paperwork, it is cover. Driving a rented crossover around Pattaya and beyond
Traffic keeps to the left and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive, so a crossover here drives the way you would expect in Thailand. Beach Road and Second Road run as a one-way loop anticlockwise through the centre, which means a wrong turn costs you a full circuit rather than a U-turn.
Motorway 7 and the run to Suvarnabhumi
Motorway 7 is the main artery between Bangkok and Pattaya, 125.865 km end to end, eight lanes, with a 120 km/h limit enforced mainly by speed cameras. The whole Bangkok–Pattaya trip works out at ฿105–130. Pay cash in the left-hand lanes or use the M-PASS and Easy Pass blue lanes. From the motorway, the Pattaya Motorway Spur drops you at Mab Prachan Interchange, then Nong Prue on road 3240, then Pattaya Interchange on Sukhumvit.
- Free alternative: Highway 34 Bang Na–Trat, then the Chonburi bypass and Highway 3 Sukhumvit past Bang Saen and Bang Phra.
- Camera fines: issued to the car owner, which is us, and re-invoiced to you.
- Speed limits: 80 km/h inside Pattaya City, which the 1969 law names as a built-up area, and 90 km/h outside it.
Day trips that suit a crossover
Koh Larn sits 7.5 km offshore and the ferry takes passengers only — the car stays at Bali Hai Pier, so this is a crossover-free day. Nong Nooch and Khao Chi Chan are roughly 24 km out, Khao Kheow Open Zoo around 47 km, and Bang Saen and Si Racha 47.6 km and 28.3 km respectively along Sukhumvit.
Parking and the city loop
