Licence, passport and bank card

You need a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, a passport and a bank card in the main driver's name. Section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act makes the permit mandatory for visitors from outside ASEAN; citizens of ASEAN countries drive on their national licence instead. The bank card carries the security hold, and the amount is set out in the rental agreement rather than quoted here. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental contract in Thailand is controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and every fee and penalty inside it is disclosed.

Traffic in Thailand keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, so the driving position takes a day to get used to. Speed limits run at 80 km/h in built-up areas such as Bangkok, 90 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on the motorways and 110 km/h on the expressways, and signs can lower any of these. Everyone in the car wears a seatbelt, including the rear row. Children under 6 must travel in a child seat to the TISI standard, and anyone below 135 cm needs a restraint or a dedicated seat; the fine reaches ฿2,000. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is a ticket, and the Low Emission Zone covering all 50 districts applies to vehicles with six wheels or more, which no hire car on this page has.

Expressways and tolls

Four tolled routes matter once you point the car away from Khao San. Pay cash at the booth or use an Easy Pass or M-PASS tag; the two tags are interchangeable, but one car carries one tag. Motorway 7 runs 149.3 km from the capital towards Chonburi, Pattaya and Map Ta Phut, with nine payment points; from the Lat Krabang entry a passenger car pays 25 ฿ to Bang Bo, 100 ฿ to Pong and 105 ฿ to Pattaya. Motorway 9, the outer Kanchanaphisek ring, works on M-Flow — no barrier, a camera reads the plate and the bill follows — or on M-PASS, with a 30–70 ฿ guide for a car. The Don Muang Tollway covers 28.1 km above Vibhavadi Rangsit Road from Din Daeng to Don Mueang, and the guide there is 60–115 ฿. If the car is on M-Flow and unregistered, the toll must be paid within two days by plate number; from day three the rate doubles, and after that it becomes the toll plus twice the toll plus a fine of ten times the toll.

Parking in the Old Town and around it

• Shopping malls: CentralWorld gives two hours free, then 20 ฿ per hour, and 50 ฿ per hour after six; ICONSIAM gives two hours free, charges 30 ฿ for the third hour and 60 ฿ per hour after seven.
• Terminal 21 Asok: three hours free, then 20 ฿ per hour from the fourth to the sixth, and 50 ฿ per hour from the seventh.
• Long free windows: Central Bangna allows six hours free; Esplanade Ratchada, PARA Pinklao and Central Festival Eastville are free of charge.

Fines and the low-emission zone

Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on the motorways and 110 km/h on the expressways. The Low Emission Zone does not touch this hire: it applies only to vehicles with six or more wheels, meaning trucks and buses, on high-PM2.5 days. A congestion charge for Sukhumvit, Silom and Ratchadaphisek was announced but remains under study, so nothing is collected today. The practical takeaway: keep the toll cash separate from your fuel budget, and photograph the parking ticket before you walk away.

Longer bookings and support during your rental

Weekly and monthly bookings change the arithmetic in your favour: at Rent-Trip the weekly rate is the daily rate multiplied by six, and the monthly rate is the daily rate multiplied by twenty-one. On the cheapest Economy car at ฿700 a day that means from ฿4,200 a week and from ฿14,700 a month, and the same multiplier applies right up the range to the Exotic class at ฿35,000 a day. VAT 7% is already inside every price we show, so the figure you agree with the manager is the figure you pay for the car. Longer bookings also make the class choice worth revisiting — a month in a Nissan March at ฿700 a day costs less than a fortnight in a Premium sedan, and if most of your driving is short hops between Khao San and Chinatown, the smaller car usually wins.
