In our experience the Wrangler is the one people book first and ask questions about afterwards, usually about parking. The Wrangler is the only Jeep here with a 2.0 L 272 hp engine, so pick it when the trip leaves the city rather than for parking inside it.

The €53 step from Compass to Wrangler buys a 2.0 L 272 hp engine against a 1.3 L 190 hp one. A week of Jeep hire starts at €450 and a month at €1,575 — the daily rate multiplied by six and by twenty-one respectively. The arithmetic is the same across the range: the Wrangler at €165 per day comes to €990 for a week and €3,465 for a month, the Compass at €112 to €672 and €2,352. Long bookings are where the difference between the models flattens out, because the same multiplier applies to all three. Take the weekly figure from five days onward — that is the point where it drops below the daily one for the same period. Monthly rates suit guests staying through a full season, and we see them most often on the Wrangler, which people keep for repeated weekend runs out of the city.

What the Rental Agreement Sets Out

• Deposit: the amount blocked on your card is stated in the rental agreement, not on this page.
• Insurance excess: the fixed sum you carry after damage or theft depends on the protection level you choose.

When you rent a car here, the rules that matter most are the emissions sticker, the low-emission zone perimeter and the ring road speed limit. All three apply to a Jeep just as they do to any other vehicle.

The Crit'Air Sticker and the ZFE Perimeter

A Jeep needs a Crit'Air sticker on the windscreen to enter the ZFE de la Métropole du Grand Paris (Zone à Faibles Émissions). The zone covers everything inside the A86 motorway — the A86 itself is excluded — and takes in the boulevard périphérique, the Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes. Crit'Air 5, 4, 3 and «Non classé» vehicles are banned from it. Check the class before you plan a route that crosses the ring road, because the perimeter is enforced, not advisory.

Speed Limits You Will Actually Meet

• Boulevard périphérique: 50 km/h since 1 October 2024, introduced by the Paris city hall in stages — the inner ring from porte des Lilas to porte d'Orléans first, the whole ring by 10 October. The Code de la route allows up to 70 km/h here, so do not assume the older limit still applies.
• Covoiturage lane: the left lane between the Issy embankment and porte de Bercy, both directions, Monday to Friday 7:00–10:30 and 16:00–20:00, reserved for cars with two or more occupants. The fine is €135, a contravention 4th class, and it has been issued since 2 May 2025.
• In town: 50 km/h under Code de la route art. R413-3, raised to 70 km/h on some stretches.
• Motorway: 130 km/h, dropping to 110 km/h in rain under art. R413-2.
• Young drivers: with a permis probatoire, motorway 110, dual carriageway 100, other roads 80 km/h, per art. R413-5.

Parking, Fuel and What a Jeep Costs You in the City

Street parking in zones 1–11 is progressive, not hourly: €6 for the first hour, €12 for two, €24 for three, €39 for four, €57 for five and €75 for six, with a maximum of six consecutive hours in one spot — the visiteur tariff in force since 1 August 2021, split into 15-minute blocks. Fuel at departmental level runs around €2.44 a litre for diesel and €2.183 for SP95-E10. The Wrangler's 2.0 L 272 hp engine and the Compass's 1.3 L 190 hp hybrid return very different city figures, so match the model to the driving you plan. On my side, I would take the Compass for a week of mixed city and out-of-town driving — the hybrid cuts fuel stops without giving up all-wheel drive.

What You Need to Rent a Jeep in Paris

Paperwork decides whether you drive away in the Jeep you booked or stand at the kerb explaining yourself. Below is what the French market asks of a driver, plus the two conditions where we have to say «agreed when booking» rather than invent a rule.

Licence Rules for Drivers from Inside and Outside the EU

A national licence issued in the EU or EEA is valid in France with no expiry limit and no exchange needed, as long as it is still valid. Drivers on a licence from outside the EU or EEA can drive on their national permit as a tourist; if the characters are not Latin, an official translation or an International Driving Permit must travel with it, because the IDP is a translation only and never replaces the licence itself. Anyone moving to France for residence may drive for 1 year from the entry date stamped in the visa, then must exchange the permit. Our own condition is the one that catches people out: the licence must have been issued more than 1 year ago, and digital licences are not accepted for rental. Check the issue date on the card before you leave home — a permit renewed three months ago fails the test even if you have held a licence for a decade.

Minimum Age, Additional Driver and the Gap We Cannot Fill

There is no single French state rule on minimum age, the young-driver surcharge, the bank card or the passport — every company sets its own, and the conditions are agreed when booking. What the law does fix is the probationary period: for a driver with less than 3 years since the licence was issued (permis probatoire), motorway speed drops to 110 km/h, roads with a central divider to 100 km/h and other roads to 80 km/h, and the alcohol limit falls to 0.2 g/l of blood (0.10 mg/l of breath) instead of the standard 0.5 g/l (0.25 mg/l). Those two numbers apply from 1 July 2015 under the Code de la route. A young driver caught above the lower limit faces a €135 fine, 6 points and a possible suspension. So the honest answer to «am I old enough» is that it depends on the supplier — ask us and we will confirm it in writing before the booking is agreed.

Documents to Have Ready at Hand-Over

• Driving licence: the physical card, issued more than 1 year ago; digital licences are not accepted for rental.
• International Driving Permit: needed alongside a non-Latin-script licence, and it must be no older than 3 years.

• Bank card: the deposit is blocked on a card and released when the keys come back, per the caution rule.
• Child seat: compulsory for children under 10 or shorter than 135 cm; both conditions must be met before it is not needed.

The child-seat rule is the one worth memorising: a €750 fine is a contravention of the 4th class, and the exemption only starts when the child is 10 or older and at least 135 cm tall. Bring the seat or tell us when booking.

Insurance and the Rental Agreement for Your Jeep

French law requires third-party liability cover (responsabilité civile) on every hire Jeep, and it is included in the price you see. It pays for injury and property damage you cause to other people, up to the legal limits of the country. What it does not pay for is you: injuries to the driver are outside it. On top of that statutory layer, French packages normally carry collision damage protection (CDW) and theft protection (TW), both capped by a franchise — the fixed excess you pay yourself if the car comes back damaged or does not come back at all.

What the Base Cover Includes and What It Leaves Out

• Responsabilité civile: compulsory by law and included automatically, covering third-party injury and property damage within French legal limits.
• CDW / collision damage protection: limits your liability to the excess and covers repair plus the days the Jeep sits off the road.

The excess itself is a fixed sum, non-refundable, and defined by that level rather than by the model: the exact figure stands in the contract of your particular booking. Deposit terms follow the same route — caution or dépôt de garantie is blocked on the card for the duration of the hire and released when the keys come back. Fuel policy usually runs plein à plein: collected full, returned full, with mileage either unlimited or capped by a franchise kilométrique. One industry practice worth knowing — Visa Premier and Gold Mastercard often cover the CDW/TW excess if the booking was paid with that card and the holder is the main driver on the agreement. It is a secondary source, not a bank document, so treat it as a question to raise when booking rather than a guarantee.

How the Jeep Reaches You

If You Need the Jeep Longer or Return It Early

Extending a booking is a call to the manager, not a new reservation, and it depends on whether the Wrangler or Compass is already promised to the next driver — on a 2.0 L Wrangler at €165 per day, a same-day extension request is the one most likely to be refused. Returning the car early does not recalculate a weekly or monthly rate: those are daily × 6 and daily × 21, agreed at booking, so the figure stands whatever day you hand the keys back. Tell the manager your plans when you book rather than mid-rental, because a Jeep rebooked for the following week cannot be held for you on a verbal request alone.

The Jeep earns its keep once you leave the ring road. Three destinations sit within a comfortable day's drive of the city, and the model you pick changes how that day feels — the Avenger for a short run, the Compass and Wrangler for the longer western routes.

Routes That Suit Each Jeep

• Versailles: roughly 20 km south-west of the city, an easy half-day in the Avenger with front-wheel drive and €75 per day — no motorway stamp needed.
• Disneyland Paris: about 32 km east, the shortest of the three runs, and the one where the Avenger's 1.2 L 100 hp engine is entirely at home.
• Deauville and the Normandy coast: around 200 km each way, all-wheel drive and the Compass hybrid's 1.3 L 190 hp engine paying off on wet coastal roads.
• Giverny: roughly 75 km west, a comfortable morning in the Compass, with the hybrid cutting fuel stops on the return leg.
• Reims and Champagne: near 145 km north-east, mostly motorway, where the Wrangler's 2.0 L 272 hp engine holds 130 km/h without strain.
• Mont-Saint-Michel: over 350 km west — a two-day trip rather than a day out, and the one route where we would steer you to the Wrangler or Compass.

Motorway Tolls, Fuel and Speed Limits on the Way Out

A day trip from the city runs on the autoroute, and the autoroute runs on péage. Rates are distance-based and charged per section, so the fare to Deauville differs from the fare to Reims — the exact figure is set at the toll barrier, not by us. Speed limits on the network are 130 km/h on the autoroute, dropping to 110 km/h in rain, and 110 km/h on dual carriageways with a central reservation. Fuel is the other line on the day's budget: SP95-E10, the standard petrol, averages around €2.183 per litre across France, and diesel sits near €2.414. The Compass is the only hybrid in our three-Jeep line-up, so on the longer Normandy or Champagne runs it is the one that stops least often. Fill up before you leave the périphérique rather than on the autoroute — motorway stations price higher than town ones.

Winter and Mountain Rules Do Not Apply Here

The loi Montagne II winter tyre requirement runs from 1 November to 31 March in around 34 mountain departments — the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Jura, the Vosges and Corsica — covering more than 4,000 communes where prefects have made it mandatory. Neither the capital nor Île-de-France is included, so a Jeep hired here needs no winter tyres or chains for a Versailles or Disneyland run. It does matter if your day trip turns into an Alpine detour: driving without the required equipment there carries a €135 fine and the vehicle can be immobilised. If a mountain leg is on your plan, tell the manager when booking so the right car and the right kit are agreed in advance.

Returning the Jeep the Same Evening

Bring the tank back at the level you took it — the plein-plein policy is standard on our rentals, and the fuel level is recorded at hand-over. Congestion on the western autoroutes peaks between 17:00 and 20:00 on weekdays, so a Normandy or Giverny return is smoother if you leave the coast by mid-afternoon.
