What the price includes and what is agreed at booking

• Mandatory insurance: Spanish law requires every rental car to carry third-party cover, and it is part of the rate rather than an add-on — the legal limits are €70,000,000 per incident for personal injury and €15,000,000 for property damage.
• Collision damage waiver: an optional extra that reduces your liability for damage to the car itself, minus the excess printed in the rental agreement.
• Theft protection: a separate option covering full or partial theft and vandalism, again minus an excess.
• Excess buy-back: partial and full versions of both waivers exist, and neither works if the underlying waiver was not taken or an exclusion applies.
• Glass and tyres: usually outside the base collision waiver and covered by their own option.

One thing worth knowing before you compare numbers: Spanish consumer rules require the advertised price to include every mandatory charge you cannot legally drive without, so a quote that looks higher may simply be a quote with fewer extras stripped out. In our experience the confusion almost always sits in the excess, not in the daily rate — ask what the excess is before you decide which car, because on the M4 and X7 that single line matters more than the difference between the 3 Series and the 5 Series.

Documents, licence and age for renting a BMW

Paperwork is the part of a BMW car rental in Barcelona that decides whether you drive away or wait at the counter, so it is worth sorting before you book. Two rules sit at the centre: an EU/EEA licence is valid as it is, and a third-country licence has to be readable to a Spanish officer. Everything else — the age, the card, the deposit — is agreed with our manager when you book, because terms differ by class.

Licence rules for EU and non-EU drivers

An EU/EEA licence — including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway — is fully valid in Spain while it has not expired, and no international permit is needed alongside it. A third-country licence works if it is in force, if the holder is old enough in Spain for the equivalent category, and if no more than six months have passed since they took up ordinary residence in Spain. The DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip. A licence not written in Spanish is valid either with an official certified translation into Spanish, or if it was issued on the model of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention. A Permiso Internacional de Conducción is a supplementary document: it is shown only together with your passport and your national licence, it runs for one year, and it is a grey triptych booklet of 16 pages in Spanish, German, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic and Russian. In our practice the translation route is the one that catches people out — a licence in Cyrillic or Arabic script without an IDP or a certified translation is the single most common reason a hand-over stalls, and it is cheaper to arrange at home than to solve here.

Age, card and passport at booking

• Driving age in Spain: you may drive a category B car from 18, and that is the only age written into Spanish law.
• Rental age and young-driver surcharge: the minimum age for a BMW and any surcharge for a younger driver are agreed when booking — there is no single national rule, and they differ between classes.
• Passport or ID: the original document in the main driver's name; rental companies ask for it, though the DGT sets no uniform norm.
• Bank card: a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit; debit cards are not accepted everywhere, and this is the rental company's condition rather than a rule of law.
• International permit: a supplementary document only, valid for one year, shown together with the passport and the national licence.
• Who answers for a fine: for parking and unpaid tolls the owner or the renter of the car is liable; for moving offences, alcohol and drugs it is whoever was driving. Where an offence is not handed over on the spot, the DGT names both vehículos de alquiler and de renting until the driver is established.

Barcelona restricts private cars through the Zona de Bajas Emisiones Rondas de Barcelona — ZBE Rondes BCN — and charges for kerbside parking inside the same perimeter. Before a BMW leaves our depot, we check that the car carries the right environmental sticker, because the conditions attached to a missing one are set out in the rental agreement.

ZBE Rondes BCN covers more than 95 km² — the whole municipality except the Zona Franca industrial estate and the Vallvidrera – el Tibidabo i les Planes neighbourhood, plus L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs and parts of Esplugues de Llobregat and Cornellà de Llobregat. The zone runs on working days, Monday to Friday. Only two DGT environmental stickers grant access: 0 emisiones, the blue badge, and ECO, the blue-and-green one. A BMW X1 with its Petrol/Hybrid drivetrain and the Mild Hybrid / Diesel BMW 3 Series, X3 and 5 Series fall into the ECO band, which is why we keep those models on the fleet rather than older diesels. Drivers on foreign plates must register the car in advance in the Registre metropolità de vehicles estrangers i altres vehicles autoritzats a les zones de baixes emissions — an unregistered foreign car is treated as a car without a sticker. Parking and toll costs

• Àrea Blava A: the blue zone, tariff A, costs €2.5 per hour; tariff B is €2.25 per hour.
• Parking hours: paid hours apply on working days; resident zones change at weekends, so read the parquímetre before you leave the car.
• Túnels de Vallvidrera: the C-16 tunnel out of the city towards Sant Cugat and the Vallès costs €4.7 for a passenger car.
• Fuel: Gasolina 95 E5 averages €1.953 across the 74 stations measured in the municipality — median €1.987, minimum €1.758, maximum €2.059.
• Returning the car: fill up before hand-over; the fuel policy is agreed when booking.

The Vallvidrera toll is the one people forget: it sits on the natural route to the Penedès and the Pyrenees, and it is charged per crossing rather than per day. Settle it at the barrier or check whether the car is fitted with a VIA-T transponder — that detail is confirmed with the manager at booking.

Speed limits you will actually meet

• Autopista and autovía: 120 km/h for passenger cars, motorcycles and campervans up to 3 500 kg.
• Rondes B-10 and B-20 inside the city: 80 km/h as the general ceiling for urban motorways unless a sign says otherwise.
• Ordinary out-of-town road: 90 km/h, which the road owner may raise to 100 km/h.
• City street, one lane each way: 30 km/h; the municipality may raise it to 50 km/h with a specific sign.
• City street, two or more lanes each way: 50 km/h, not counting bus and reserved lanes.
• Shared-platform street: 20 km/h.

Cameras on the Rondes are dense and the DGT penalty table starts at €100 for a minor excess, rising through €300, €400 and €500 to €600 with six points. The 50% reduction for payment within 20 calendar days applies to most of them, but a speeding ticket on a rented car reaches the agreement holder first — we pass it on, and the 20-day window starts from the date of notification.

Taking a rented BMW outside Barcelona

Day trips from Barcelona are where a BMW earns its keep: the C-32 south to Sitges, the C-16 inland to Montserrat, the Costa Brava coast road north. Each model handles those routes differently, and the territory you are allowed to cover is agreed when booking — not assumed at the counter.

The BMW X3 at €72 per day is the pick for Sitges and the Penedès wine country: 190 hp, AWD and a 2.0 L mild-hybrid diesel that returns low consumption on the 40-minute run down the C-32. For Montserrat and the mountain roads around it, the BMW X7 40d Pack M at €576 per day carries seven people and luggage with 340 hp and AWD, and the 3.0 L diesel pulls cleanly out of the hairpins below the monastery. The BMW M4 Competition at €588 per day belongs on the Costa Brava — 510 hp, rear-wheel drive, 3.0 L petrol — but it is the last car you want on a wet, twisting climb. Longer routes and winter roads

Taking a rented BMW outside Barcelona is mostly a question of matching the car to the road. A 1.5 L front-wheel-drive BMW X1 is fine for a coastal lunch; it is not the tool for a February run to La Cerdanya. BMW car rental in Barcelona damage deposit and insurance

Every BMW we rent in Barcelona leaves the yard with the mandatory cover that Spanish law requires of any car on the road, and the deposit, the excess and any extras are agreed when you book with a manager. The figures below are the ones you can plan around; anything that depends on the individual contract is printed in the agreement before you sign it.

What happens if the BMW is damaged

Mandatory third-party cover is included in every booking and applies at all times, even if the person driving was not named in the agreement. Under Spanish law it pays up to €70,000,000 per incident for personal injury, however many people are hurt, and €15,000,000 per incident for property damage — but it does not cover the car itself or the driver's own injuries. For damage to the vehicle, collision damage waiver is the usual option: it removes your liability for bodywork damage from a collision with another vehicle or an object, minus the excess. Vandalism falls outside it unless it happened while the car was in use. Theft protection does the same job for full or partial theft. On an M4 Competition or an X7 40d Pack M, the excess is set out in the rental agreement, so decide on the waiver before you drive away rather than after.

Deposit, excess and hand-over checks

• Deposit: a pre-authorisation is held on a credit card in the main driver's name; the amount is confirmed before the agreement is signed.
• Excess: the amount you pay yourself after damage is printed in the agreement whatever level of protection you take.
• Buying the excess down: partial and full buy-outs exist for both collision and theft; they do not apply if the base cover was declined or an exclusion kicked in.
• Glass and tyres: usually outside standard collision cover and handled as a separate option.
• Inspection sheet: scratches and dents must be written into the agreement or the check sheet before you leave, signed by both sides, with a copy for you — otherwise the damage is charged to you.
• Fuel: the full-to-full policy is the common one in Spain, so bring the car back with a full tank.

Spanish consumer rules let you ask for another car at no extra cost, including a class above, when the booked model is not there.
