Samui is 228.7 km² and the ring road around it runs 51 km, linking Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam — a distance you cover in a week without ever needing a long transfer. Every car on this page has 5 seats except the Toyota Avanza minivan, which has 7. Two people with one suitcase fit anything from the Suzuki Swift at ฿750 a day upwards, and the Honda Brio, Suzuki Celerio, Mazda 2 and Mitsubishi Attrage all sit in the same Economy bracket. Children under 6 must ride in a child seat to the TISI standard, and under 135 cm they need a seat or a belt; the fine runs to ฿2,000.

Petrol, diesel or electric for a week of island driving

We supply petrol, diesel and electric cars; the Isuzu D-Max is the only diesel, and 7 of the 24 cars are electric. The D-Max suits anyone hauling dive tanks or furniture to a villa, but at ฿1,300 a day it is the priciest weekly pick.

Documents and driving rules for weekly car rental in Koh Samui

Thai law treats a foreign visitor's paperwork as two documents, not one: a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Citizens of ASEAN countries drive on their national licence and need nothing further. Rent-Trip asks for the passport, the home licence, the permit and a bank card in the main driver's name; the minimum age is 21, and conditions for drivers under 25 are set out in the rental agreement.

• Side of the road: traffic keeps to the LEFT and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive, so the first ten minutes off the ring road are the ones to take slowly.
• Alcohol: 50 mg% in the blood; 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences; refusal of a breath test counts as an admission.
• Child seats: children under 6 must ride in a TISI-standard seat, and under 135 cm in a seat or on a belt — the fine reaches ฿2,000.
• Seat belts: every passenger wears one, rear row included.
• Kerbside parking: parking is barred at red-and-white and yellow-and-white kerbs.
• Tax sticker: a square blue hologram sticker on the windscreen carries the year in the Buddhist calendar (Gregorian + 543), and it must be current on a hired car.

The island's own road conditions matter more than the statute book here. On a week's booking the practical answer is to drive the ring road in daylight for the first two days.

Under Thai law every registered car carries compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor), which covers injury to third parties; first-class insurance covers damage to the car itself, and its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. A bank card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold, with the amount also set out in that agreement. VAT 7% is already included in the prices shown.

Plan the hand-over around your arrival

Raja Ferry sails from Donsak to Lipa Noi hourly from 05:00 to 19:00, about 1 h 30 min each way — if your week starts on a ferry day, a morning crossing leaves the whole afternoon free for the hand-over. Tell your manager your flight number or ferry time when you book: a car waiting at the agreed address at the agreed hour beats a phone call from a pier. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB, written in Thai with every fee and penalty disclosed inside it, so read the copy you are given before the first kilometre.

The dry window versus the monsoon weeks

• February to April: The driest stretch of the year, with February at 64.3 mm over 4.3 rain days and April at 82.9 mm — the best window for a week of uninterrupted island driving.
• July and August: These are not monsoon months here; August brings 102.2 mm over 10.5 rain days, so a summer week works well.
• October to December: The wettest period, peaking in November at 444.6 mm across 16.5 rain days, with October at 294.9 mm and December at 263.1 mm.
• Mid-October to early December: The heaviest rain of the year, when roads flood in places and grip on wet asphalt drops.

What wet weeks mean for the car you book

During the heaviest rain, standing water collects on low sections of the ring road, and the surface gets slippery.

High season, low season and the weekly rate

High season runs 20 December to 31 March, and low season 1 April to 19 December.

Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement in Thailand is a contract controlled by the OCPB. It is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it — so the document you receive is not a summary, it is the full set of terms. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, which is why we ask you to settle any camera notice that arrives after your week ends. The two questions worth asking before you sign are what the excess actually is and whether the Class 1 cover has any exclusions — both answers sit in the agreement, and both are worth reading on the day rather than after a scrape in a Chaweng car park.

The minimum driver age is 21. Conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the rental agreement. Documents you need are your passport, your home driving licence, an International Driving Permit unless you hold an ASEAN licence, and a bank card in the main driver's name. Driving without a valid permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim — so if your permit is still at home, that is the one item worth sorting before the car is delivered.

What the agreement does not permit is worth stating plainly: no off-road driving, no beach or jungle tracks.
