What moves the price up or down

• Class: the gap between Economy at $30 and Premium at $80 is wider than the gap between Premium and the $120 SUVs.
• Length: a monthly booking costs 21 daily rates, so a $30 car lands at $630 and a $69 one at about $1,449.
• Seats and drivetrain: the SUV band runs from the 7-seat Nissan Pathfinder at $69 to the 5-seat Porsche Cayenne S at $250; crossovers start at $39.

Where the hand-over happens

If your flight lands at Shota Rustaveli International Airport, 17 km south-east of the centre, the hand-over can be arranged there instead. The car arrives clean with a full tank, so there is nothing to sort out before you drive.

What to check before you drive off

• Fuel level: the car is supplied with a full tank and must come back full — the full-to-full policy, and no other fuel option is offered.
• Controls: confirm the automatic gearbox, the lights and the wipers before you pull into traffic.
• Documents: keep the rental agreement in the glovebox for the whole trip.
• Return address: agree it in the same conversation as the delivery — it is not automatically the same place.

Petrol in Georgia costs 4.06 ₾ a litre and diesel 4.76 ₾ (21.09.2026), and filling up on the way out of the city is easier than hunting for a station in the centre. Return the car with the tank full; otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement.

A self-drive car stays in Georgia; the only trip abroad is to Armenia, via Sadakhlo about 70 km south, and only with our driver. Leave a buffer before an evening flight.

Street rules you need from the first kilometre

• Speed outside town: 90 km/h on ordinary roads for a category B car, 110 km/h on a motorway, 80 km/h with a light trailer.
• Seat belts: the driver and all front passengers must wear them; rear belts are not required by law.
• Phone: hands-free or a headset only — both hands stay on the wheel.
• Children under 3: travel in the back in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight; a passenger aged 16 or over may hold the child on the rear seat.
• Children under 6: must never be left alone in a parked car.
• Alcohol: the limit is 0.3 ‰ (0.03 %), so a single glass with lunch is already a risk.

Fines are paid per offence: 50 ₾ for speeding 15–40 km/h over the limit, 150 ₾ above that, 30 ₾ for a phone, 40 ₾ for a belt, 50 ₾ for running a signal or leaving parking unpaid. A 20 % discount applies if you pay within 10 days, and 100 points in a year costs you the licence.

Parking: what the kerb actually costs

• Payment: through the Tbilisi Parking app, at parking meters and terminals, or on parking.tbilisi.gov.ge, which also has a search for a transit or foreign plate.
• Permits: a year costs 50 ₾, six months 25 ₾, a week 4 ₾, with an all-inclusive option at 800 ₾ a year; a visitor on a short rental does not need one.
• Underground car parks in the centre: Freedom Square around 2–3 ₾ an hour, Rike about 7 ₾ a day, Orbeliani Square 1–2 ₾ an hour, Galleria Tbilisi roughly 2 ₾ for the first hour.

Petrol costs 4.06 ₾ a litre and diesel 4.76 ₾ a litre, so an idle engine in traffic is money you never get back — and the car goes back full-to-full, which is easiest to arrange at a station on the way out of the centre rather than hunting for one in the lanes.

Documents, licence and insurance for car rental in Old Tbilisi

What you need to bring

• Driving licence: your national licence is valid in Georgia for up to one year from your date of entry, and you do not exchange it.
• Licence in a non-Latin, non-Cyrillic script: bring an International Driving Permit or a notarised translation — Georgia is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention.
• Deposit: agreed in advance and set out in the rental agreement, never a fixed figure on this page.

Insurance on a Georgian-registered car

• Third-party liability (mandatory cover): as of 05.09.2026 there is no compulsory motor third-party insurance for vehicle owners in Georgia; the government put its introduction into the autumn session legislative work plan, with no date named.
• What this means for you: a rental car carries Georgian plates, so the mandatory-insurance rule for foreign-registered vehicles does not apply to it.
• Personal belongings: theft of personal items is not covered by the standard policy.

Age, experience and the terms we set ourselves

The minimum rental age, the young-driver surcharge, and the cards accepted are agreed when booking (a self-drive car stays in Georgia) — these are rental-market practices, not articles of Georgian law, and we will not dress them up as either.

Two rules sit with us rather than with the state. The car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank; anything else is charged as set out in the rental agreement.

Drivers heading for the mountains should know one seasonal rule: winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-designated zones chains on at least two front wheels may be required in particular weather. Plan a mountain route in that window and the tyre question belongs in your booking conversation, not in a roadside decision.

Day trips you can reach with a rental car from Old Tbilisi

Routes north: Mtskheta, Ananuri and the Georgian Military Road

The S3 Georgian Military Road runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border at Stepantsminda, passing Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, with the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m as its highest point. Gudauri itself is a resort at 2,200 m by the pass, roughly 2–2.5 hours from the capital, with the season running from early December to mid-April.

Fuel, parking and tolls on a day out

Every international and domestic road in the country is free of charge, and the Roads Department confirmed on 10.06.2026 that this stays unchanged, so there are no vignettes or transponders to buy before a trip. The Rikoti pass on the east–west E60 opened on 29.12.2025 — 52 km with 51 tunnels, 97 bridges and four lanes — and is also free. In the old town itself, street parking runs from 1 ₾ per hour after the first 15 free minutes, paid through the Tbilisi Parking app or a terminal, so leave the car parked and walk once you are back. Fill the tank before you re-enter the centre: our full-to-full policy means you return it full, and stations on the way out of town are easier to reach than one between the old-town lanes.
