How booking a family car rental in Bangkok works

You choose the car, then a manager agrees the delivery address, date and time with you before the booking is fixed. Nothing is confirmed until those three details are settled.

Rental is available from 1 day, and the car comes clean with a full tank. A bank card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the rental agreement. The minimum driver age is 21, and conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement. VAT 7% is included in the prices shown.

The right family car for Bangkok roads comes down to three things: how many people are travelling, how much luggage comes with them, and whether the day stays inside the city or heads out to Pattaya, Ayutthaya or Khao Yai.

Seat counts for a family car rental in Bangkok

For city days the five-seat crossovers are the obvious choice — the Mazda CX-30 at ฿1,100 and the MG ZS at ฿1,150 sit at the bottom of the range. Seven seats start with the Toyota Veloz at ฿1,300 and run up through the Chevrolet Captiva and the diesel Toyota Innova Crysta, both at ฿1,600 and ฿2,400. Vans carry 11 or 12: the Toyota Commuter and the Toyota Hiace at ฿2,150 and ฿2,400, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Toyota Ventury and Hyundai H-1 at ฿2,400, ฿2,400 and ฿3,200. Ask for the seat count you actually need when you book, because swapping a 7-seat MPV for a 12-seat van on the day is not always possible.

Child seats and belts for a family car rental

• Under 6 years: a child seat to the TISI standard is required — raise it when you book.
• Under 135 cm: a seat belt or a special child seat must be used, whichever fits the child.
• Every passenger: belts are worn in all rows, including the third row of a 7-seat MPV.
• The fine: up to ฿2,000 for carrying a child without the required seat or restraint.
• Where the rule comes from: the 13th amendment to the Land Traffic Act 1979, published in the Royal Gazette in May 2022, applies from 17.08.2023.

The rule covers cars, pickups and minivans, so it applies to every vehicle class on this page. Where a child seat cannot be fitted — a rear-facing seat in a van's bench row, for instance — the law allows the child to ride in the back on a lap belt, slowly, in the left-hand lane, and never in a pickup bed.

Daily, weekly and monthly rates

The class you pick moves the daily figure more than anything else. Seventeen of the 52 cars on this page are electric and start at ฿1,250 a day. On a two-week family stay the weekly rate applies twice, so the cost per day drops well below the daily figure — that is where the arithmetic works in your favour.

What the price includes and what it does not

• VAT 7%: already included in every price shown, so ฿1,100 is the number you pay per day, not ฿1,100 plus tax.
• Clean car, full tank: the car is handed over clean with a full tank, and the fuel type differs by class — petrol for most crossovers, diesel for the vans and 4x4s.
• Hire from 1 day: there is no minimum week, so a single day with a family car here is a normal booking.
• Security hold: a bank card in the main driver's name is used for the hold, and the amount is set out in the rental agreement.
• Insurance: compulsory Por Ror Bor is attached to every registered car; the terms of first-class cover and the excess are set out in the rental agreement.
• Delivery fee: if there is one, it is agreed when booking — we do not quote it here.
• Fuel, tolls and parking: these stay with you as the driver, and the agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB, written in Thai with every fee disclosed in it.

Documents and driving rules for a family car rental

A foreign visitor driving in Thailand needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention — that pairing is what section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act expects. Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence alone. Driving without the permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim — a risk that is not worth a family holiday.

Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive. If left-hand driving is new to you, the first hour is the one that matters: keep the centre line on your right shoulder, and let the passenger in the front seat call the turns for the first few kilometres. Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on the motorways and 110 km/h on the expressways. Fines from traffic cameras are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so the paperwork follows you after the trip rather than stopping you at the roadside.

What is agreed before your family car rental is delivered

When the car arrives

The car comes clean with a full tank. Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, which matters most in the first ten minutes behind the wheel — take the car on a quiet soi before joining Sukhumvit or the expressways. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so keep the agreed return time. If your plans move, message the manager rather than the driver — the booking is changed in one place, with the person who agreed it.

Hand-over and return

On return, the car goes back with the tank as it came, and the security hold is released under the terms of the rental agreement.

Insurance and support behind your family car rental

Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) is attached to every registered car and covers injury to third parties. First-class (Class 1) cover protects the vehicle itself; its wording and the excess sit in the rental agreement, not quoted here.
