What a driver needs to bring
- Home driving licence: a full licence from your own country, valid and not expired, held by the person who will be driving.
- International Driving Permit: required alongside the home licence for visitors from outside ASEAN — issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act.
- ASEAN nationals: a national licence from an ASEAN country is enough; no permit is needed.
- Passport: carried by the main driver, since the agreement is drawn up in their name.
- Bank card: a card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the agreement.
- Minimum age: 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement.
Driving without the right documents carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim — which on a wedding day is the last thing anyone wants to be arguing about.
Insurance and what it covers
- Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor): attached to every registered car and covering injury to third parties.
- First-class (Class 1) insurance: covers damage to the car itself; its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement.

Rules that apply on the road here
Traffic keeps to the left and every car we hand over is right-hand drive, so the driver sits on the right. The drink-drive limit is 50 mg% in the blood, dropping to 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and for holders of temporary licences; the penalty runs to up to a year in prison, a fine of ฿5,000–20,000, or both, plus a licence suspension of at least six months — and refusing the test counts as an admission. Children under 6 must travel in a child seat to the TISI standard, and below 135 cm in a restraint or special seat, with a fine of up to ฿2,000. Every passenger, including those in the back, wears a seatbelt.

A wedding-day route here is short by distance and long by time: the ring road around the island is 51 km, two lanes with one lane in each direction and no divider, and the resorts you will drive between — Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut, Maenam — all sit on it. Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, so the first ten minutes behind the wheel are the ones to take slowly.

High season on the island runs from 20 December to 31 March, and the Convertibles tier holds only two cars. Book the car before the venue and the florist, not after: availability on a specific date is confirmed by the manager, never assumed. Weekly and monthly rates work out lower per day than the daily rate — weekly = daily x 6, monthly = daily x 21 — which suits a stay that runs past the wedding itself.
