If your trip is mostly beach-hopping between towns, the Fabia or Scala keeps the daily cost at the low end.

Kamiq, Octavia and Karoq for luggage and long drives

The Škoda Octavia is our Sedan at €42 per day, and the Škoda Karoq is the SUV at €55 per day — both carry a 1.5 L, 150 hp engine, the strongest in our Škoda line-up. On a week-long route with checked luggage — Girona-Costa Brava Airport to Roses is 75.2 km — the boot matters more than the engine.

The Crossover and the Sedan sit at the same €42 per day, so the Kamiq and the Octavia are not a price decision at all. Our advice is to pick on the drive you have planned rather than on the €42 line: the Kamiq suits town work and short coastal hops, the Octavia suits a week of luggage and motorway miles. If neither matters and the budget is the only lever, the Fabia at €28 per day is the cheapest way to put five seats and a full tank on the road.

Which Škoda comes with an automatic

Škoda Fabia, Škoda Kamiq and Škoda Karoq are the automatic Škoda models on this page — the €28, €42 and €55 models respectively. Škoda Scala and Škoda Octavia are manual: the €35 Comfort hatchback and the €42 Sedan liftback, both 1.0 L and 1.5 L petrol with 110 hp and 150 hp. All five are front-wheel drive with five seats, so the choice is purely about how you want to work the road.

Licences from the EU and EEA stay valid in Spain for as long as they are in date, and no international permit is needed for them. If your licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, the DGT recommends getting a Permiso Internacional de Conducción before you travel and carrying it together with your passport and your national licence. A national licence that is not in Spanish is accepted either with an official certified translation into Spanish or if it was issued in the format of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention — the international permit is the usual alternative to a translation. Note that a Permiso Internacional de Conducción is only ever shown alongside the national licence, never on its own, and it runs for one year.

Motorway and mountain: what the rules allow

• Autopista and autovía (AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33): the limit is 120 km/h, and these are the roads that link the coast resorts to Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO).

Driving rules and costs for Škoda car rental in Costa Brava

Speed limits and the roads you will actually use

On the autopista and autovía — AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33 — the limit for a passenger car is 120 km/h. On a carretera convencional, which covers most of what you will drive once you leave the motorway, including GI-614, GI-682 and C-260, it is 90 km/h. The AP-7 corridor from Barcelona through Girona to the French border has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme and C-33 are free as well, with the barriers removed on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021. The only toll roads left in Catalonia are the C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the C-32 south of Barcelona toward Castelldefels, Sitges and El Vendrell, where the Vallcarca barrier charges €8.42 and Cubelles €5.03, category 2. None of them sit on a route along this coast, so a week of driving between the resorts costs you nothing in tolls.

The Girona low-emission zone and where you can park

Since 15.09.2025 the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona applies between 7:00 and 20:00, Monday to Friday, on working days. It covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and the Barri Vell. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are restricted; there is a 24-day-per-year allowance inside the restricted hours without a permit. Enforcement is by cameras reading number plates, so there is no sticker to display. Cars in the Spanish rental fleet carry the DGT badge, and a car with the badge faces no restriction at all — which is one practical reason to take a hire car rather than drive your own vehicle into the city centre. In Girona, zona blava runs Monday to Saturday on working days, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00, at €1.20 per hour with a two-hour maximum (€2.40); the zona verda for non-residents costs the same €1.20 per hour with the same two-hour cap, though the hours differ — Pedreres–Vista Alegre runs Monday to Friday 9:30–13:00 and 17:00–20:00 plus Saturday 9:30–13:00, while Güell–Devesa runs Monday to Saturday 8:00–20:00. In Lloret de Mar the picture is friendlier: the Can Lloranes car park has 160 spaces at about €15 per day from 23 June to 11 September and is free the rest of the year, and the Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride has 200 spaces, free if you stay longer than 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre, running 15 June–15 September. Lloret's zona blava splits into zone A — Tarradellas and Francesc Macià, year-round with seasonal hours — and zone C — Fenals, Canyelles, Boadella, Can Lloranes, 23 June–11 September.

Fuel, and what a tank actually costs

Petrol 95 E5 across the province of Girona averages €1.94 per litre, with a median of €1.979, a low of €1.718 and a high of €2.122 across 250 filling stations; along the coast the average is €1.956, the median €1.994, across 58 stations. Petrol 98 E5 runs higher — €2.106 average in the province (median €2.129, range €1.898–€2.289, 152 stations) and €2.131 on the coast (median €2.147, 36 stations). Diesel (Gasóleo A) is the cheapest of the three at €1.922 average in the province (median €1.959, range €1.718–€2.089, 266 stations) and €1.932 on the coast (median €1.959, 59 stations). Every Škoda on this page runs on petrol, so budget around €1.94 per litre for 95 E5.
