Documents and Age Rules for Renting a Mercedes-Benz in Pattaya

The rules below are the ones that apply to every car in our fleet, from the C 220 d up to the G-Class.

Licence, IDP and the minimum age

• International Driving Permit: a foreign visitor needs the IDP issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention alongside the home licence, both carried together.
• ASEAN nationals: citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence, with no IDP and no conversion.
• Minimum age: the minimum driver age is 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for Premium and Luxury classes are set out in the rental agreement.
• Where the IDP matters: the police fine for driving without one is ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim — a point worth remembering on a Mercedes-Benz rather than a scooter.

Documents to bring and the security hold

• Passport: the main driver's own passport, valid for the trip.
• Home driving licence: held by the main driver named on the booking.
• International Driving Permit: required unless you hold an ASEAN licence.
• Bank card: a card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the rental agreement, and we do not quote it here.

One detail is worth knowing: an IDP is only valid together with the home licence it was issued against, so leaving the card at home and travelling with the permit alone puts the booking at risk. Driving a Mercedes-Benz here means left-hand traffic, a right-hand drive car and speed limits that change with the road.

Speed limits and how they are enforced

• Built-up areas: 80 km/h inside Pattaya City, which the law names a built-up area; a sign can lower it further.
• Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h on ordinary roads.
• Motorway 7: 120 km/h, enforced primarily by speed cameras between Bangkok, Chonburi and Pattaya.
• Fines: up to ฿1,000, with ฿500 the usual figure on the receipt.
• Camera fines: issued to the registered owner of the car, which on a hire car is the company, and then re-invoiced to the driver.

Fuel: what to put in a Mercedes-Benz

Diesel B7 was ฿41.44 a litre on the last check at a Bangchak station, gasohol 95 was ฿39.94 and gasohol 91 was ฿39.57; premium 98 reached ฿49.29. Prices in Chonburi can differ from Bangkok by a few satang. Our diesel cars are the C 220 d, and the E-Class takes petrol or diesel, so check the filler cap before the first stop — putting petrol into a diesel engine is the one mistake that turns a hire into a repair bill. The C 350 e is a plug-in hybrid and takes petrol as well as a charge. We hand every car over with a full tank, so the first fill is your own.

Alcohol, parking and the everyday traps

The alcohol threshold is 20 mg/dl for drivers under 20, for holders of temporary licences, for drivers without a licence or with one of the wrong category — a ministerial regulation published in the Royal Gazette on 20 September 2024. Parking is prohibited along red-and-white and yellow-and-white kerbs. Beach Road and Second Road run one way anticlockwise, so a missed turn costs a full loop. The fine for driving without the right documents is ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim.

Insurance and the Rental Agreement for Your Mercedes-Benz

Every Mercedes-Benz we hire out in Pattaya carries compulsory motor insurance, known in Thailand as Por Ror Bor. It is attached to the registered car and covers injury to third parties, not the vehicle itself. Damage to the Mercedes-Benz is handled under first-class (Class 1) cover, and its terms, together with the excess, are set out in the rental agreement.

The agreement itself is a contract controlled by the OCPB. Since 30 December 2025 it must be written in Thai, with all fees and penalties disclosed inside it.

One clause deserves attention before you collect the keys. The agreement prohibits off-road, beach and jungle-track driving, so the G-Class stays on tarmac no matter how inviting the sand at Wong Amat looks. The same document sets the young-driver conditions and the rules for premium classes, and those are agreed when booking rather than quoted here. Bring your passport, home driving licence, International Driving Permit unless you hold an ASEAN licence, and the bank card for the hold — without the permit the police fine runs ฿500–1,000 and an insurer may refuse a claim, which on a Mercedes-Benz is the expensive version of that mistake.
