Getting around in Costa Brava is easiest on a scooter: it slips through traffic, needs little space to park and keeps your day on your own schedule. Take one for a day of errands or keep it for the whole stay — we help you choose the engine size for your plans and your licence.

Short hops around town

Errands, cafés and meetings across town without waiting for a taxi. A light scooter is easy to handle in traffic and needs little space to park.

Day trips out of town

Viewpoints, villages and quiet roads beyond the centre. A larger engine keeps pace on faster roads and carries a passenger more comfortably.

Mopeds, 125s and Maxi-Scooters from Blanes to Roses: Day Rates and Licences

Fleet manager
Published Updated

Scooter rental in Costa Brava starts from €24.77 a day for a 50 cc moped, and the middle of 21 scooter models sits at €44.65. Below: what each engine size costs, which licence it takes, the age and deposit rules, how far a day's hire lets you ride, and how longer rentals and the season change the daily figure.

How a scooter day is priced

A scooter on this coast is rented by the day, as a whole vehicle for one rider or for a rider and a passenger. There is no seat price and no shared ride: the figure belongs to the scooter, and the scooter is yours from pick-up to return. Three modes sit side by side in this section: daily hire, longer hire by the week or the month, and in every case self-drive. Nobody rides it for you, so the licence question in a later section decides more than the price does.

One unit: the day

All 21 models in this section are compared by the daily rate. No hourly or half-day rates appear among these models, and longer quotes are still expressed as a daily rate multiplied by the number of days. That makes the day the honest unit for comparing a 50 cc moped in Blanes with a 530 cc maxi-scooter in Girona.

What a “from” price means

Each figure on this page is the lowest known daily rate for that model. It is a floor, not a promise for every date. A scooter at €41.21 in October can cost more in the first half of August, and a low-season quote can sit well below the figure shown here. Read the numbers as a map of the market: they tell you which class costs what relative to the others, and roughly where the bottom of each class lies.

Why the exact model may change

Scooters are booked by class more often than by name. A reservation for a Honda SH125i or a Piaggio Liberty 125 usually comes with the words “or similar”, which means the shop can hand over another scooter of the same engine size and style if the named one is out. For a 125 cc city scooter the difference between two brands is small. For a maxi-scooter, where luggage space and seat comfort matter more, it is worth asking whether the model is guaranteed before you pay.

Multi-day quotes

When a rental runs several days, the total is quoted as one sum. Four days on a Honda Vision 110 came to €145.63, four days on a Yamaha Delight 125 to €154.55, and four days on a Piaggio Liberty 125 in Girona to €180.71. Each of those totals is simply the daily rate times four, so a longer hire does not automatically buy a lower rate. The section on weeks and the season explains when it does.

Twenty-one models by engine size

The 21 scooters gathered here fall into three clear groups by engine size, plus two unusual machines that do not fit any of them. Engine size matters twice: it sets the licence you need and it sets the price band. The table below shows the groups first, then every model with its daily rate.

GroupModelsDaily rate rangeMiddle of the group
50 cc mopeds3€24.77–36.50€35.45
110–125 cc scooters11€28.88–74.41€41.21
200–530 cc maxi-scooters5€48.37–94.61€61.91
Other (Vespa Primavera, Quadro QV3 350 trike)2€108.96€108.96

50 cc mopeds: the cheapest way onto two wheels

Three mopeds open the range: the SYM Jet 14 50 at €24.77, the Kymco Vitality 50 at €35.45 and the Piaggio Liberty 50 at €36.50. The SYM is the single cheapest scooter in the section. A 50 cc moped is light, easy to park and accepted with the widest range of licences, but it is slow on the climbs between coves and struggles with two adults aboard. It suits short runs inside one town, to the beach and back, more than a day of riding along the coast road.

110–125 cc: the workhorse class

Eleven models make up the largest group. The cheapest is the Symphony 125 at €28.88, then a tight cluster between €36 and €45: the Honda Vision 110 at €36.41, the Piaggio Liberty 125 at €37.20, the Yamaha Delight 125 at €38.64, the Kymco Agility City 125 at €40.46, the Honda SH125i at €41.21, the Suzuki Burgman 125 at €42.74 and the Aprilia Compay 125 Custom at €44.65. Above that cluster sit the larger-bodied 125s: the Yamaha XMAX 125 at €52.89, the Kymco SuperDink 125 at €65.51 and the Yamaha NMAX 125 at €74.41. A 125 keeps up with traffic on main roads, carries two people without strain and is the class most riders end up choosing.

200–530 cc maxi-scooters

Five bigger scooters complete the picture: the Suzuki Burgman 200 at €48.37, the Piaggio Beverly 300 at €54.74, the Yamaha XMAX 400 at €61.91, the Yamaha TMAX 530 at €67.79 and the Yamaha XMAX 300 at €94.61. These machines have more power for the hills, more weather protection and more room under the seat. They also need a motorcycle licence, which removes them from the choice of most visitors who only hold a car licence.

Two outliers

The Vespa Primavera at €108.96 is chosen for its style rather than its value: the same money rents almost any maxi-scooter in the section. The Quadro QV3 350 at the same €108.96 is a three-wheeled scooter, a different machine altogether, and the one large scooter here offered to holders of a car licence.

The licence each engine size needs

The licence rule is the first filter, before price and before model. The paperwork is checked when you collect the scooter, so it pays to match the licence to the engine size before you book rather than at the counter.

50 cc: the easiest door

A 50 cc moped needs an AM licence, which in Spain can be held from the age of 15, but a full car licence covers it too. That makes the three mopeds in this section the only scooters open to almost every adult visitor with a driving licence. Note that the rental age is a separate rule from the licence age, as the next section shows.

125 cc and the three-year car licence

For a 125 you need an A1 motorcycle licence, or a Spanish or EU category B car licence held for at least three years. The car-licence route is a Spanish rule and applies to riding in Spain. Holders of a licence from outside the EU should not assume it is accepted on a 125: ask before booking, and expect the shop to want either A1 or a full motorcycle category. Some shops also add their own age floor to this class, covered below.

Above 125 cc

Anything larger than 125 cc is a motorcycle in the eyes of the law, whatever its shape. The XMAX 300, XMAX 400 and TMAX 530 are rented to holders of a category A motorcycle licence. A car licence, however old, does not open this class. If you do not hold a motorcycle licence, the best two-wheeler you can rent is a 125.

The three-wheel exception

The Quadro QV3 350 is classed as a trike with three wheels, and car licence holders are accepted on it. It gives a car-licence driver more engine than a 125, at a price of €108.96 a day. For most riders a 125 is cheaper and lighter, but the trike is the one way to ride a 350 cc scooter without a motorcycle licence.

What to carry at pick-up

Bring the physical licence, not a photo, plus a passport or national ID card and a credit card in the rider's name for the deposit. If your licence was issued outside the EU, ask whether an International Driving Permit is required alongside it. A helmet is compulsory on every scooter in Spain, so confirm when you book how many helmets come with the rental and whether a passenger helmet is part of the price.

Age, deposit and mileage limits

Beyond the licence, three conditions decide whether a booking goes through and how much money is tied up while you ride: the minimum age, the deposit, and the daily distance allowed.

Minimum age

Even though an AM licence can be held from 15, scooter rental in Girona starts at 18. Some shops set the bar higher on the 125s: the Suzuki Burgman 125 and the Piaggio Liberty 125 were offered only from 21, and for the Liberty 125 with a car licence held at least three years. If the rider is between 18 and 21, check the age rule for the exact model before you pay, because it can differ between two scooters of the same size at the same shop.

The deposit

The deposit is usually blocked on a credit card at pick-up and released after the scooter comes back undamaged. In Girona it runs from €200 to €300 for most scooters, rises to €500 for the Yamaha XMAX 400, and reached €600 for the Yamaha Delight 125 with one shop. The amount does not always follow engine size, so ask for the figure for your scooter, and make sure the card has enough room on it.

Daily mileage

Some rentals come with a distance limit. The Yamaha Delight 125 was offered with 125 km a day, enough for a long coastal loop but not for a day trip there and back to the far end of the coast with detours. If you plan a long ride, ask whether the rental is unlimited, what the allowance is, and what each extra kilometre costs. On a multi-day hire, also ask whether the allowance is counted per day or over the whole period.

Damage and what is not stated

Ask what the deposit covers and what it does not: a dropped scooter, a scratched panel and a lost key are the usual questions. Whether theft or damage cover is included varies between shops and is not part of the prices shown here, so treat it as a line to read in the rental terms rather than an assumption.

Matching the scooter to the route and the town

The cheapest scooter is not always the right one. The coast between Blanes and Roses mixes flat town streets, steep roads down to the coves and longer stretches between resorts. The route you plan should pick the class, and the class then picks the price.

Town errands and the beach

For short runs inside Lloret de Mar, Blanes or Platja d'Aro, a 50 cc moped or a small 110–125 cc scooter is plenty. The SYM Jet 14 50 at €24.77 and the Symphony 125 at €28.88 are the two cheapest ways to do it. A small scooter is easy to park near a beach where cars circle for a space, and for one rider with a towel and a bag it is all you need.

Two people and the coast road

With a passenger, or with hills between coves, a 125 is the sensible minimum. The cluster from the Piaggio Liberty 125 at €37.20 to the Aprilia Compay 125 Custom at €44.65 covers most needs. A moped with two adults aboard is slow on climbs, and on main roads that is uncomfortable for the riders and for the traffic behind them.

Longer rides and luggage

For a day touring several towns, or for a rider who wants a bag under the seat and better wind protection, the larger-bodied scooters earn their price. With a car licence that means the Yamaha XMAX 125 at €52.89, the Kymco SuperDink 125 at €65.51 or the Yamaha NMAX 125 at €74.41. With a motorcycle licence, the Piaggio Beverly 300 at €54.74, the XMAX 400 at €61.91 and the TMAX 530 at €67.79 give real power for roughly the same money as the top 125s.

The same scooter costs differently in different towns

Prices are set shop by shop, and the town matters. The Piaggio Liberty 125 was €37.20 a day in Blanes and €45.18 in Girona. The Honda Vision 110 went the other way: €36.41 in Girona and €38.81 in Blanes. The TMAX 530 cost €67.79 in Girona and €69.73 in Lloret de Mar and Platja d'Aro. The XMAX 300 at €94.61 was quoted in Roses, well above the 400 cc XMAX elsewhere. If you can pick up in a neighbouring town, comparing two or three bases is often worth more than comparing models.

Electric scooters

Visitors to Lloret de Mar also ask about electric scooters. None of the 21 models in this section is electric, so if a quiet, plug-in scooter is the goal, ask separately and check the range against your route before booking.

Several days, a week and the season

Two forces move the daily rate: the length of the rental and the time of year. They do not always pull in the same direction, and knowing which one dominates helps you book at the right moment.

Several days

The four-day quotes on the coast were exact multiples of the daily rate: €145.63 for the Honda Vision 110 is 4 × €36.41, and €154.55 for the Yamaha Delight 125 is 4 × €38.64. A short multi-day hire, in other words, does not come with a built-in discount. If one is offered, it is a bonus rather than the rule, and the daily figure on this page is a fair guide to the total.

A week or a month

Weekly and monthly hire are offered in this section, and searches for monthly scooter hire around Girona show that people living on the coast for a season ask for it. For a stay of several weeks, a direct monthly quote is the only way to know the real rate: ask for it in writing, with the deposit, the distance allowance and the service arrangement spelled out.

Low season and high season

The season moves the price more than the length of hire does. On the Lloret de Mar market a 50 cc moped can be quoted at €5 to €15 a day in the low season and €20 to €35 in the high season, and larger scooters run €35 to €60 a day at the peak. The “from” figures on this page are lowest rates, so they lean towards the quiet months. In July and August, expect the upper end of each class, and book earlier: the cheapest models in each group are the first to go.

When to book

For June to September, reserve before you arrive, especially for 125s, which are the most requested class. In spring and autumn walk-in rentals are easier, and that is when the lowest rates in each class are most likely to apply.

Before you book: alternatives and a checklist

A scooter is one of several ways to get around on your own. The table below sets it against the neighbouring options in this guide, by the lowest daily rate.

OptionFromBest for
Bicycle€20 a dayShort distances, flat routes, no licence
Motorcycle€22.30 a dayRiders with a motorcycle licence and longer rides
Scooter€24.77 a dayTown to beach, coast road, two people on a 125
E-bike€25 a dayHills without a licence, moderate distances

Scooter or something else

If you hold no licence at all, a bicycle or an e-bike is the way to go. If you hold a motorcycle licence and plan long rides, compare the motorcycle section, which starts at a similar daily rate. For most visitors with a car licence of three years or more, a 125 cc scooter is the most practical machine on this coast: cheap to run, easy to park and fast enough for the main roads.

Checklist before paying

  • Licence: 50 cc with AM or a car licence; 125 cc with A1 or a Spanish or EU car licence held three years; above 125 cc with a motorcycle licence.
  • Age: 18 at minimum, and 21 on some 125s.
  • Deposit: €200–300 for most scooters, €500 or €600 on some models; a credit card in the rider's name.
  • Distance: unlimited or a daily allowance such as 125 km, and the price per extra kilometre.
  • Model: guaranteed or “or similar”.
  • Helmets: how many are included, and whether a passenger helmet costs extra.
  • Town: compare at least two pick-up towns, since the same scooter can differ by several euros a day.

Five figures to keep in mind

  • Range: 21 models from €24.77 to €108.96 a day, middle at €44.65.
  • Mopeds: 50 cc from €24.77, middle of the group €35.45.
  • 125s: from €28.88, middle of the group €41.21.
  • Maxi-scooters: from €48.37, middle of the group €61.91, motorcycle licence required.
  • Four days: about four times the daily rate, for example €145.63 on a Honda Vision 110.

FAQ

How much does it cost to rent a scooter on the Costa Brava?

Daily rates for 21 scooter models start from €24.77 for the SYM Jet 14 50 moped and reach €108.96 for the Vespa Primavera and the three-wheeled Quadro QV3 350. The middle of the range is €44.65 a day. These are the lowest known rates, so a quote for July or August is usually higher.

What licence do I need for a 50 cc moped?

An AM licence, which in Spain can be held from 15, or any full car licence. The rental itself starts at 18.

Can I ride a 125 cc scooter with a car licence?

Yes, if it is a Spanish or EU category B licence held for at least three years; otherwise you need an A1 motorcycle licence.

This car-licence route is a Spanish rule. With a licence from outside the EU, ask before booking whether it is accepted on a 125.

Which scooters need a motorcycle licence?

Everything above 125 cc. The Yamaha XMAX 300, XMAX 400 and TMAX 530 are rented to holders of a category A licence. The one larger machine open to car licence holders is the Quadro QV3 350, a three-wheeled scooter.

How old do I have to be to rent a scooter?

At least 18. Some shops ask for 21 on certain 125s, such as the Suzuki Burgman 125 and the Piaggio Liberty 125, so check the rule for the exact model if the rider is under 21.

How big is the deposit?

Usually €200 to €300, blocked on a credit card at pick-up. It rises to €500 for the Yamaha XMAX 400, and €600 was asked for the Yamaha Delight 125 by one shop.

Is there a mileage limit?

On some rentals, yes. The Yamaha Delight 125 came with 125 km a day. Ask whether your rental is unlimited and what an extra kilometre costs.

How much is a 125 cc scooter per day?

From €28.88 for the Symphony 125. Most 125s sit between €36 and €45, with €41.21 in the middle of the group; larger-bodied 125s such as the Yamaha XMAX 125, Kymco SuperDink 125 and Yamaha NMAX 125 cost €52.89 to €74.41.

Is renting for several days cheaper per day?

Not automatically. Four-day quotes on the coast were exactly four daily rates: €145.63 for a Honda Vision 110 and €154.55 for a Yamaha Delight 125. For a week or a month, ask for a direct quote.

Do prices differ between towns?

Yes, by several euros a day. The Piaggio Liberty 125 was €37.20 in Blanes and €45.18 in Girona; the Yamaha TMAX 530 was €67.79 in Girona and €69.73 in Lloret de Mar and Platja d'Aro.
