Yes — the road stays open most of the season, but when snow affects traffic the DGT restricts mountain roads point by point for cars without winter tyres or chains. The restrictions are not permanent and they are not announced weeks ahead: they appear on roadside signs and overhead boards on the specific stretch, and they are lifted as soon as the road is cleared. Puerto de Navacerrada sits at the top of the M-601, and that is where the checks concentrate, because the same road feeds the ski area and the car park. Tyres marked M+S or with the three-peak mountain symbol are the ones that let a car through without fitting chains where chains are compulsory. In our experience the practical move is to check the DGT boards the morning you leave and to plan the sierra for the second half of the day if the night has been cold — the ploughs work the pass early, and by mid-morning the queue at the checkpoint has usually cleared.

Do you need snow chains to reach the sierra

Spain has no year-round winter-tyre rule: chains or winter tyres are required only where signs demand them during snow. Nothing obliges you to carry chains in the capital in December, and nothing forbids you from driving to Cercedilla on summer tyres in January.

• Winter tyres: marked M+S or with the three-peak mountain symbol (3PMSF); the second marking is what lets you pass a chain checkpoint without fitting anything.

The toll question catches people out in one direction only: drivers who assume the fast radial is the natural way north. It is not. The R-2 and its siblings are there to bypass congestion on the free autovías, and for the sierra the free A-6 and M-601 do the job. Check the route before you leave, and you will not need a transponder or a toll payment at all.

The ZBE Madrid sticker

ZBE Madrid — Zona de Bajas Emisiones de Madrid — covers every urban street in the municipality, all 21 districts. Cars without a DGT environmental sticker, category A, cannot enter: petrol registered before 2000 and diesel registered before 2005. The sticker itself is one of four — 0 emisiones (blue), ECO, C and B — and it is displayed on the windscreen.

Foreign-registered cars have no DGT sticker at all, and they must be registered in advance before entering. That is the part most visitors miss: a hire car delivered to you in the city normally already carries its sticker, but a car you brought from abroad does not, and the registration step takes time.

Speed, alcohol and the mountain road

Speeding is fined on the DGT scale by limit and actual speed: 100 EUR with no points, then 300 EUR with 2 points, 400 EUR with 4, 500 EUR with 6, and 600 EUR with 6 for the most serious band.
