Speed, alcohol and cameras

Speed limits follow the national rule: 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90–120 km/h outside them. The drink-drive limit is 50 mg% in blood, and 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences; refusing a test counts as an admission. The penalty runs to up to one year in prison, a fine of ฿5,000–20,000, or both, plus a licence suspension of at least six months. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter — in practice, to us and then to you. Seatbelts are compulsory for every passenger, including the rear row, and children under 6 must travel in a TISI-standard child seat, with a fine of up to ฿2,000 for the driver who skips it.

A foreign visitor driving here needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. The permit is recognised under section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act, and it has to sit alongside the national licence, not replace it. Citizens of ASEAN countries are the exception: they drive on their national licence with no permit at all.

That second consequence costs far more than the fine, because a refused claim on a ฿1,700-a-day SUV is your bill, not the insurer's. If you hold an ASEAN licence, none of this applies to you.
