Buggy Tours on Koh Samui: Prices, Models and Licence Rules
Dune buggy rental in Koh Samui means a guided outing: from ฿4,990 for a two-hour buggy for two to ฿12,200 for a four-seat UTV on the four-hour mountain route. Below — the three models, the price per hour and per seat, licence and age rules, the routes, and how a buggy compares with a quad.
How buggies are sold on the island: guided outings of 2 to 4 hours
On Samui a buggy comes with a guide, a route and a fixed number of hours, so the price is for an outing rather than for a day with the keys.
What a buggy booking includes
Dune buggy rental in Koh Samui works differently from hiring a scooter: every price in this section is for a guided outing of two, three or four hours, with the machine, the guide and a set route sold together. The Rent-Trip section on this page brings together three models — the CFMOTO ZForce Z8, the ZForce Z10 and a four-seat UTV with a 950 cc engine — all priced for the four-hour mountain programme that starts in Maenam. Beyond those three, operators on the island run two- and three-hour programmes without naming the machine, at ฿4,990 to ฿7,990 per vehicle. A round-trip hotel transfer and a helmet come with every one of them. In my experience, the useful first question is "how many hours, and which stops" — two quotes of different length cannot be compared on the headline figure.
Two-, three- and four-hour programmes side by side
| Duration | Price per buggy | Seats | Main stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 hours | ฿4,990 | Up to 2 | Viewpoint, hidden waterfall |
| 3 hours | ฿6,490 | Up to 2 | Temple, viewpoint, waterfall |
| 3 hours with lunch | ฿7,990 | Driver, passengers free | Highest point, lunch, waterfall |
| 4 hours, two-seater | ฿8,200–9,200 | 2 | Highest point, waterfall, buffet lunch |
| 4 hours, four-seater | ฿12,200 | 4 | Highest point, waterfall, buffet lunch |
Priced per driver, with passengers riding free
A buggy outing on the island is priced per driver, not per person on board: on one two-hour programme the driver pays ฿4,990 and a passenger aged 3 or over rides free, and the three-hour version with lunch works the same way at ฿7,990. Another operator prices its two-hour buggy at ฿4,990 and its three-hour one at ฿6,490, each for a maximum of two people — two adults or an adult with a child. On the four-hour programme with the three models in this section, a child under 10 joins as a passenger for an extra ฿300. In practice, then, the figure on the tag is the price of the whole machine. A couple pays what a solo rider pays — which is why someone travelling alone gets more from a quad, priced per rider, than from a buggy with an empty seat.
CFMOTO ZForce Z8, Z10 and the 950 cc four-seater
Three buggy models on Samui carry a price with a named machine, and all three run the same four-hour route, so the gap between them comes from the machine alone.
The three models with a price
| Model | Seats | Drive | Four-hour price |
|---|---|---|---|
| CFMOTO ZForce Z8 | 2 | Automatic, 4x4 | ฿8,200 |
| CFMOTO ZForce Z10 | 2 | Automatic, 4x4 | ฿9,200 |
| UTV 950cc | 4 | Automatic, 4x4 | ฿12,200 |
ZForce Z8 or ZForce Z10 for a couple
The CFMOTO ZForce Z8 starts at ฿8,200 for the four-hour mountain tour, and the ZForce Z10 at ฿9,200 — ฿1,000 more, about 12%, for the same route, guide and lunch. Both are two-seat side-by-sides with an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive; the Z8 is described as comfortable for couples, the Z10 as bigger and roomier still. No engine size is stated for either, so the extra money buys room rather than power. Over four hours the difference comes to ฿250 an hour, or ฿500 per person for two. On a route that climbs to the island's highest point over dirt tracks, cabin space counts for more than it would on tarmac — for two tall adults the Z10 is the more comfortable pick, while a lighter pair gets the same day out of the Z8 for less.
The 950 cc four-seater for families
The UTV 950cc is the only four-seat buggy of the three, priced from ฿12,200 for the four-hour tour and aimed at families with children. It has a 950 cc engine and automatic four-wheel drive, and it costs ฿4,000 more than the Z8 — about 1.5 times as much — while carrying twice as many people. With four on board the price comes to ฿3,050 a seat, against ฿4,100 a seat for two in the Z8 and ฿4,600 in the Z10. For a family of three the four-seater works out at about ฿4,067 a head, roughly level with a Z8 shared by two at ฿4,100 each. A family of four that splits into two Z8s pays ฿16,400 — ฿4,200 more than one four-seater — and needs two drivers. Keep the family in one machine unless two adults both want to drive.
What a buggy costs per hour, per seat and per group
Programmes run from two to four hours and seat two or four people, so the tag price says little until it is divided by hours and by riders.
Price per hour across the programmes
| Programme | Price | Hours | Per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-hour buggy | ฿4,990 | 2 | ฿2,495 |
| Three-hour buggy | ฿6,490 | 3 | ฿2,163 |
| Three-hour buggy with lunch | ฿7,990 | 3 | ฿2,663 |
| CFMOTO ZForce Z8 | ฿8,200 | 4 | ฿2,050 |
| CFMOTO ZForce Z10 | ฿9,200 | 4 | ฿2,300 |
| UTV 950cc | ฿12,200 | 4 | ฿3,050 |
Longer tours cost less per hour
A buggy tour in Koh Samui costs between about ฿2,050 and ฿3,050 per hour, and the longest programmes are the cheapest by the hour. Four hours in a CFMOTO ZForce Z8 work out at ฿2,050 an hour, while the two-hour buggy at ฿4,990 comes to ฿2,495 — about 22% more for every hour. The three-hour programmes sit in between, at ฿2,163 without lunch and ฿2,663 with it. Not every hour is spent at the wheel: training on a dirt track, a swim at the waterfall and, on the longer tours, lunch all come out of the same clock. If the ride itself is the point, the two-hour slot gives the densest driving; if you want lunch with a view from the top, only the three- and four-hour programmes include it.
Price per person for two, three and four riders
The price per person depends on filling the seats: a two-hour buggy shared by two comes to ฿2,495 each, a three-hour one to ฿3,245, and a CFMOTO ZForce Z8 on the four-hour route to ฿4,100. The four-seat UTV 950cc falls to ฿3,050 each with four on board but rises to ฿6,100 each if only two ride in it. A solo rider pays the full tag in every case, since the price is set per vehicle. A group of five or six fits into one four-seater plus one two-seater — ฿20,400 with a Z8 — or into three two-seaters for ฿24,600. Count the riders before choosing machines and match seats to the headcount: an empty seat is the most expensive thing you can book on this kind of outing.
The private tour supplement
The four-hour programme can be made private for an extra ฿4,500 on the total, which lifts a CFMOTO ZForce Z8 from ฿8,200 to ฿12,700 and the four-seat UTV 950cc from ฿12,200 to ฿16,700. Several two- and three-hour programmes run as joint groups instead, with vehicles from different bookings following one guide. For a single couple the supplement adds about 55% to the price; for a family of four in the four-seater it adds ฿1,125 a head. What a private tour buys is pace — no waiting for other drivers on the climb or at the waterfall. The supplement makes sense for a party filling several machines, where ฿4,500 is split many ways; for one couple, the joint tour covers the same ground for far less.
Driving licence, age limits and who can take the wheel
Requirements differ by operator more than by price: one asks for a driving licence, another lets 12-year-olds drive after a short training run.
When a driving licence is required
A driving licence is required for the two-seat CFMOTO ZForce Z8 and ZForce Z10 on the four-hour mountain tour, and the requirement comes attached to the price of both. Other buggy programmes on Samui take a different line: one operator answers "do I need a licence?" with a plain no, and on its two- and three-hour tours drivers from 12 with no experience are accepted after training on an easy dirt track. The three-hour programme of that kind runs Polaris and CFMoto buggies, so the rule follows the operator, not the machine. For the four-seat UTV 950cc no separate requirement is given. Pack your licence whichever programme you book — and if nobody in the group holds one, choose a tour that states no licence is needed rather than hoping nobody asks.
Ages for drivers and passengers
- Drivers from 12: one operator lets drivers aged 12 and over take the wheel on its two- and three-hour tours, no experience needed.
- Passengers from 3: on those tours a passenger aged 3 or over rides free, so a parent can drive with a small child beside them.
- Children under 10: on the four-hour mountain tour a child under 10 joins as a passenger for an extra ฿300.
- Passengers from 10: another operator takes children aged 10 and over as passengers, with a maximum of two people per vehicle.
- Book by the youngest: passenger age limits run from 3 to 10 depending on the programme, so check the youngest rider's age first.
Health limits, shoes and dust
Buggy tours on the island are not suitable for people with back problems or heart conditions, or for pregnant women — a restriction stated on both the two-hour and the three-hour jungle programme. The tracks are dirt and the routes climb steeply, so the ride is rough even at a slow pace. Closed shoes are required on one programme and recommended on another, so leave the flip-flops behind; one operator adds a face mask against dust to the helmet, and the four-hour programme supplies a raincoat if the weather turns. Two of the routes include a swim at the waterfall, so swimwear under your clothes saves changing on the spot. If anyone in the group has a back problem, remember that the passenger seat is no gentler than the driver's — plan a different outing for them.
Jungle trails, the highest point and a hidden waterfall
The routes overlap more than the prices suggest: most combine a jungle trail, a viewpoint and a waterfall, and the longer ones add the summit and lunch.
The four-hour mountain route from Maenam
The four-hour mountain tour sets off around 9:00 from Maenam on the north coast and covers jungle trails, a climb to the highest point of the island, a hidden waterfall and a Thai buffet at a 360-degree jungle restaurant. From the top the view takes in Lamai Bay and the Standing Big Buddha. This is the programme on which all three models in this section run — the CFMOTO ZForce Z8 at ฿8,200, the ZForce Z10 at ฿9,200 and the UTV 950cc at ฿12,200 — with a hotel transfer both ways, a multilingual guide, a helmet and lunch or drinks included. A UTV tour in Koh Samui of this length fills the whole morning, so keep the beach for the afternoon. And if your hotel is on the opposite side of the island from Maenam, allow for the transfer when you plan breakfast.
The two- and three-hour routes
The shorter programmes keep the same ingredients in smaller doses. One two-hour buggy tour goes to a viewpoint and a secret waterfall, and its three-hour version adds a temple, at ฿4,990 and ฿6,490. Another two-hour tour, also ฿4,990, runs through the jungle to viewpoints, a hidden waterfall with a swim and a mountain-top Buddha temple. Its three-hour counterpart at ฿7,990 climbs to the highest point of Koh Samui for lunch with panoramic views, comes back down by a different path and stops at a waterfall. Each starts with training on an easy dirt track. On that pair, the extra hour costs ฿3,000 and buys the summit and the meal — worth it for the view, less so if the driving was what you came for.
Start times and hotel pickup
- Morning slot: starts at 09:00 or 09:30, or a pickup window of 08:30–09:30, depending on the operator and the programme.
- Afternoon slot: two-hour tours also run at 14:00 or 14:30, which leaves the morning free for the beach.
- Hotel transfer: a round-trip pickup from the hotel is part of the price on every programme in this section.
- Pickup areas: one operator collects free of charge from 12 areas and offers a paid private transfer from 7 more.
- Self-arrival: on that programme riders can also make their own way to the start by 09:30.
- Before booking: give the hotel's name rather than just the area, since free pickup zones differ between operators.
Buggy or quad, and what the price leaves out
The same operators run quads on the same trails, which makes the quad the natural benchmark — and the inclusions show which costs stay outside the price.
Buggy and quad on the same programmes
| Programme | Buggy, up to 2 | Quad, rider only | Quad with passenger |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 hours | ฿4,990 | ฿2,190 | ฿3,190 |
| 3 hours | ฿6,490 | ฿3,290 | ฿4,790 |
When a buggy is worth the premium
On identical two-hour programmes a buggy for two costs ฿4,990 against ฿3,190 for a quad carrying two — about 1.6 times as much, or ฿1,800 more; at three hours the gap narrows to ฿1,700, with the buggy at ฿6,490 and the two-up quad at ฿4,790. Guided quad outings on the island start from ฿1,450 for one rider. What the premium buys is a seat each and a steering wheel instead of handlebars (plus an automatic gearbox on the three models in this section) — easier for a passenger than holding on to a rider for hours. For an off-road buggy in Koh Samui, the gap matters most to a solo traveller: a quad for one at ฿2,190 for two hours costs less than half the buggy price, so the buggy pays off only when two people share it.
What tour prices include and exclude
- Included: a round-trip hotel transfer, a helmet and drinks come with every programme, and the shorter ones start with a briefing or training run.
- Insurance: accident or health cover for riders is named in the price of all three programme lengths.
- Lunch: a Thai meal near the summit is included on the three-hour summit tour and on the four-hour mountain tour.
- Excluded: damage to the buggy itself is not covered, and neither are alcoholic drinks or personal spending.
- Ask first: find out how damage to the machine is charged before the ride, because the cover in the price protects people, not vehicles.
Cancellation and a doubtful forecast
On the two-hour jungle programme cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start, with a full refund; inside 24 hours the money is not returned. The four-hour tour hands out raincoats when needed, so a passing shower does not stop the ride, although a full day of rain turns dirt tracks into mud. With morning and afternoon departures on the two-hour programmes, there is room to move to a later slot on the same day. The practical rule is about timing: if the forecast looks doubtful, book at least a day ahead and make the final call by the same hour the day before the tour, while cancelling still costs nothing.
Key points before you book a buggy
Five figures to keep in mind
- Format: buggies on the island go out as guided tours of two to four hours, priced per buggy, with a hotel transfer included.
- Price: from ฿4,990 for a two-hour buggy for two up to ฿12,200 for a four-seater on the four-hour mountain route.
- Models: the CFMOTO ZForce Z8 and Z10 seat two; the UTV 950cc seats four and costs ฿3,050 a head when full.
- Licence: required for the two-seat CFMOTO buggies on the four-hour tour; some shorter programmes take drivers from 12 without one.
- Benchmark: a quad for one costs less than half as much, so the side-by-side pays off when two or more people share it.
