Sailing Yachts on Koh Samui: Day Rates, Skippers and Routes
Sailboat charter in Koh Samui starts from ฿12,800 a day for an 11.8-metre cruiser booked by the week, and the six boats in this section take from 4 to 70 guests. Below: how day, multi-day, hourly and per-trip prices compare, which boats need a skipper, where they sail from and how the season changes the plan.
How sailboat prices are quoted: day, week, hour or trip
Sailing boats on the island are priced in four units, and the same boat can cost very different amounts per day depending on how long you keep it.
The weekly rate behind the lowest day price
The lowest daily price in this section, ฿12,800 for the Catalina 375, is a weekly rate divided by seven. A full week on this boat comes to ฿89,600, and ฿89,600 over seven days is exactly ฿12,800. Shorter bookings cost more per day: two days are ฿53,700 in total, which is ฿26,850 a day — more than twice the weekly figure. Three days come to ฿62,700 and four days to ฿71,700, so the daily cost falls with every extra night on board. Days five to seven together add only ฿17,900 — the gap between the four-day and the weekly price. In my view this is the figure most worth checking on any sailing charter here: a "from" price can be the long-booking price. Before comparing two sailboats, ask each for the total on your exact number of days, not the starting daily figure.
Multi-day prices for one boat
| Booking | Total | Per day |
|---|---|---|
| 2 days | ฿53,700 | ฿26,850 |
| 3 days | ฿62,700 | ฿20,900 |
| 4 days | ฿71,700 | ฿17,925 |
| 7 days | ฿89,600 | ฿12,800 |
Hourly sailing and fixed-length trips
Hourly rates come with a captain on board: about ฿4,000 an hour on the 30-foot Freedom 30 and about ฿4,500 on the 44-foot Whitby 42 ketch. The Whitby is also offered as a 4-hour half day or sunset sail for ฿18,000 for up to four guests — the same ฿4,500 an hour. The Red Baron, a 30-metre Thai sailing junk, works on a different model altogether: fixed trips of 3, 6, 9 or 10 hours, from ฿42,000 for the 3-hour sunset cruise. The Rent-Trip section on this page puts all six boats side by side, but their units do not convert into each other one to one. So compare like with like — a day rate with a day rate, an hourly total with a trip of the same length.
Six boats from 9 to 30 metres
The section holds five sailing monohulls and one sailing junk, and that is close to the whole sailing market of the island once catamarans are set aside.
The boats side by side
| Boat | Length | Guests | Day rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalina 375 | 11.76 m | 4 | ฿12,800 (weekly basis) |
| Bavaria C45 | 14 m | 8 | ฿13,600 |
| Freedom 30 | 9.1 m | 5 | ฿17,200 |
| Hans Christian Christina | 15.8 m | 8 | ฿21,800 |
| Whitby 42 | 13.1 m | 8 | ฿28,600 |
| Red Baron junk | 30 m | 70 | ฿42,000 per 3-hour trip |
Classic hulls and modern cruisers
Three of the five monohulls are classic or classic-style designs, and two are modern production cruisers. The Hans Christian Christina, sailing under the name Independence, is a 52-foot classic yacht — the longest monohull here at 15.8 metres. The Whitby 42 Geronimo is a ketch, a two-masted rig, described as a modern classic with a centre cockpit and a spacious interior. The Freedom 30 Sanora is a classic sailing cruiser of 30 feet, pitched for couples and families. On the modern side sit the Bavaria C45 Northern Star, with four cabins, and the Catalina 375, which is nine years older than the Bavaria. Is a classic hull a compromise? Not for a day of easy island hopping — but for a week aboard, compare cabins and bathrooms boat by boat, because the guest figure is the same 8 on the Bavaria, the Christina and the Whitby.
Which boat suits which plan
- Catalina 375: four guests on a multi-day trip, bareboat with an ICC or with a skipper, from Bophut Beach.
- Bavaria C45: a modern 14-metre cruiser, four cabins for 8 guests, with the captain as an option rather than a rule.
- Freedom 30: the smallest boat, a classic cruiser for a couple or a family of up to five on a skippered island day.
- Hans Christian Christina: a 52-foot classic for 8 guests who want a traditional deck and the longest hull.
- Whitby 42: a ketch for half-day, sunset and full-day sails, with the skipper and transfer inside the package price.
- Red Baron: a twin-masted hardwood junk with traditional Thai sails, built in Surat Thani, for groups up to 70.
Why length does not set the price
Length explains little of the price in this section. The smallest boat, the 9.1-metre Freedom 30, starts at ฿17,200 a day, while the 14-metre Bavaria C45 starts at ฿13,600 — the bigger boat is ฿3,600 cheaper. The 13.1-metre Whitby 42 is the most expensive monohull at ฿28,600, about twice the Bavaria, although it is almost a metre shorter. The Christina, the longest monohull, sits in the middle at ฿21,800. The difference lies in the crew: the Whitby is offered only with a captain, while on the Bavaria the captain is optional. For sailboat rental in Koh Samui, then, the first question is what the price includes — boat only, or boat plus skipper — and only then the size. A captain-included rate and a bareboat rate are two different products, even on boats of the same length.
Guests, cabins and the cost per person
Guest capacity runs from 4 on the Catalina 375 to 70 on the Red Baron junk, and dividing the price by the headcount reorders the boats completely.
Price per guest at full capacity
| Boat | Guests | Starting price | Per guest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bavaria C45 | 8 | ฿13,600 | ฿1,700 |
| Hans Christian Christina | 8 | ฿21,800 | ฿2,725 |
| Catalina 375 | 4 | ฿12,800 | ฿3,200 |
| Freedom 30 | 5 | ฿17,200 | ฿3,440 |
| Whitby 42 | 8 | ฿28,600 | ฿3,575 |
| Red Baron junk | 20 in base price | ฿42,000 for 3 hours | ฿2,100 |
Sleeping on board versus a day sail
A day guest needs a seat in the cockpit; a night guest needs a berth, and the berth count is the tighter limit. The Catalina 375 has 2 cabins, 4 berths and one bathroom, so its 4-guest figure is the same by day and by night. The Bavaria C45 has four cabins for its 8 guests. Check-in on the Catalina is at 3 pm and check-out at 9 am, so the first and the last day of a charter are partial days. On a week-long trip that matters little; on a two-day trip costing ฿53,700 it takes a real share of the time on the water. If anyone in your group plans to sleep aboard, ask for the berth count first — the guest number on its own says only how many fit on deck.
Extra guests on a fixed price
Two boats price the group in steps rather than as one flat figure. The Whitby 42 half day of ฿18,000 and the full day of ฿26,000 around Samui or Koh Phangan cover up to four guests, and each extra guest up to eight adds ฿1,000. The Red Baron's base price covers 20 people; every extra guest costs ฿1,800 on the sunset cruise, ฿2,100 on the half day, ฿2,400 on the full day and ฿2,700 on the Ang Thong trip. A full load of 70 on the sunset cruise therefore comes to ฿132,000, or about ฿1,886 a head. For a large group, the junk is the only boat in this section that fits — and the per-head figure drops as the group grows, so price it with your real headcount.
Skipper or bareboat: licence, résumé and deposit
Whether you can take the helm yourself depends on your papers and on the boat, and sailing without a skipper brings costs that a skippered day trip does not.
What you need to sail without a skipper
To take a sailboat out bareboat, the operators ask for an ICC — the International Certificate of Competence — shown both to the charter base and to the port authorities. On top of the licence, they ask for a nautical résumé: a written record of your previous sailing, with the types of boat you have skippered and the waters you have sailed. Without a licence, you can still charter any of the boats, but with a skipper on board. For a sailing yacht charter in Koh Samui, prepare both documents before the trip; the licence alone is not the whole requirement, because the résumé is read as well. And send copies ahead: the documents go to the base and to the port authorities, not only to whoever takes your booking.
Captain mandatory, optional or extra
Each boat handles the skipper differently. On the Whitby 42 the captain is mandatory. The boat appears both at ฿28,600 a day and as a ฿26,000 day package for up to four guests, and that package names the skipper, insurance, transfer, fruit and soft drinks, snorkelling and fishing gear, a paddleboard and a dinghy as included. On the Bavaria C45 the captain is optional, so ask whether the ฿13,600 rate is with or without him. On the Catalina 375 a skipper costs about ฿7,950 a day, and a skippered charter runs for at least 7 nights — shorter skippered dates are by request. The Red Baron always sails with its captain and crew. So two quotes for "the same" day can differ by almost ฿8,000 simply because one includes a skipper.
Costs on top of the boat
- Security deposit: about ฿114,300 on the Catalina 375, the largest single sum after the charter price itself.
- Fuel: not included in the Catalina's price, so motoring on calm stretches is paid on top of the charter.
- Skipper: about ฿7,950 a day on the Catalina when you do not sail yourself; included in the Whitby packages and on the Red Baron.
- Minimum age: 18 is the lowest age at which the Catalina can be rented.
- Extras: a cook and final cleaning are offered as extra services on the Catalina, alongside the skipper.
Piers, routes and what a sailing day covers
The boats leave from the north and north-east of the island, and from there the classic routes run to Koh Phangan, Ang Thong and Koh Tao.
Bophut, Bang Rak and the north shore
Every known departure point for these boats is on the north coast. Bareboat charters start and finish at Fisherman's Village in Bophut, about 15 minutes from the airport, and the Catalina 375 is based at Bophut Beach. The Whitby 42 departs from Bang Rak, the next bay east, and the Red Baron is moored on the north side of the island. A pickup is part of the deal on some boats: the Whitby packages and the Red Baron trips include a transfer, while the Catalina's terms name no transfer at all. The Catalina's 2.1-metre draft is worth knowing too: it limits how close the boat can anchor off a shallow beach. Does the pier matter? It does if you stay on the south or west coast — add the drive to the north shore to your morning, and confirm the exact pier before you pay.
Red Baron trips by length
| Trip | Length | Price for 20 | Extra guest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunset dinner cruise | 3 hours | ฿42,000 | ฿1,800 |
| Half-day cruise | 6 hours | ฿53,000 | ฿2,100 |
| Around Koh Samui or Koh Phangan | 9 hours | ฿71,000 | ฿2,400 |
| Ang Thong Marine Park | 10 hours | ฿81,000 | ฿2,700 |
Ang Thong, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao
The Gulf here suits relaxed cruising rather than demanding sailing, with easy day sails between the islands. Koh Phangan, north of Samui, is the closest target, with sandy beaches, and both a full Whitby day and a 9-hour junk trip go around it. Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park is a group of 42 islands, better for the views than for time in the water. Koh Tao, further north, is the snorkelling and diving destination and suits a multi-day trip better than a day sail. On a private sailing trip in Koh Samui, a good morning breeze usually comes up early and drops off in the afternoon — so leave early for the longer legs. On the Red Baron's 10-hour Ang Thong day, the base price includes lunch, snorkelling gear, a guide and towels.
Season, wind and a request that gets a clear quote
The calendar affects both the weather and the price, and a precise request is what turns six different pricing units into comparable totals.
Dry months and sailing months
Two different calendars apply to sailing here. The driest weather, free of rain, falls between November and March. The best wind in the Gulf of Thailand, by contrast, comes from May to August — while the west side of the peninsula has the southwest monsoon with rain and stronger winds, Samui stays sheltered and gets steady, moderate sailing breezes. The two periods do not overlap at all, so the choice depends on what you value: dry decks or a good breeze. Prices move with the season too — in the low season a sailboat can start from about ฿6,100 a day, about half the lowest weekly-based figure in this section. If the plan is Ang Thong or Koh Tao, the breeze matters more; for a sunset sail close to the island, the dry months matter more. For dates around the season change, ask for both prices before fixing the trip.
Booking ahead and long-charter discounts
Sailing boats on the island are few — five monohulls and one junk — so each booked date takes a real share of the choice. In the high season the advice is to book about two months ahead. Long charters bring the clearest savings: in the green season the Catalina 375 offers up to 30% off for 10 days or more, and its weekly rate already brings the daily cost down to ฿12,800. With six boats in total, the next option after your first choice can be a boat of a different class and size. If your dates are fixed, hold the boat first and refine the route afterwards. On a long charter, ask whether a discount applies to the whole booking or only to the days beyond ten, and whether the deposit changes with the length.
What to put in the request
- Dates and hours: the exact days and, for a day sail, the number of hours, so an hourly or package rate becomes one total.
- Guests and nights: the full headcount and how many sleep aboard, because berths are the tighter limit on monohulls.
- Skipper: whether you sail yourself with an ICC and a nautical résumé, or need a skipper included in the price.
- Route: Ang Thong, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao or a sunset sail, since the route decides the trip length.
- Extras: fuel, deposit, transfer and meals — ask which are inside the price and which are added later.
Key points before you book a sailboat
Five figures to keep in mind
- Weekly rate: the lowest sailboat charter in Koh Samui, ฿12,800 a day, is the Catalina 375 on a 7-day booking; two days cost ฿26,850 each.
- Hourly sailing: about ฿4,000 to ฿4,500 an hour with a captain, or ฿18,000 for a 4-hour half day for up to four.
- Skipper: mandatory on the Whitby 42, optional on the Bavaria C45, about ฿7,950 a day extra on the Catalina 375.
- Groups: the Red Baron junk takes up to 70 guests, ฿42,000 for 20 on a 3-hour sunset cruise.
- Bareboat papers: an ICC and a nautical résumé, plus a deposit of about ฿114,300 on the Catalina.
