Big Bikes in Pattaya: Day Rates, Classes and Rental Rules

Fleet manager
Published Updated

Motorcycle rental in Pattaya starts from ฿400 a day for the 125 cc Honda MSX125 or the 150 cc Yamaha M-Slaz 150, and the 29 models on this page run up to ฿4,000 for a Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce. Sixteen of them start at ฿1,000 or less. Below: what those prices measure, how the riding classes compare, what a week or a month costs, and the licence, age and deposit rules.

What the 29 prices measure

The 29 motorcycles in this section range from a 125 cc mini to a heavy American cruiser, and their starting prices are not all quoted in the same way.

From a 125 cc mini to a Harley cruiser

The Rent-Trip section on this page brings together 29 motorcycle models from seven makes, with starting prices from ฿400 to ฿4,000. Honda supplies 12 of them, from the MSX125 to the CB650R; Yamaha has six, Kawasaki four, Ducati three, Suzuki two, and Harley-Davidson and Royal Enfield one each. Engine sizes, where they are stated, run from 125 cc on the MSX125 to 700 cc on the Yamaha XSR700, and the line-up also includes the Kawasaki Z900, the Yamaha MT-09 and the Suzuki GSX-S1000F, whose sizes are not given. Every bike with a stated seat count takes two people — rider and passenger. In my view, the make matters less than the riding position: a naked bike, a sports bike and a cruiser of similar size feel like three different machines, so choose the class first and the badge second.

One-day rates and three-day low-season rates

The starting prices here come in two kinds: a one-off daily rate, and a daily figure derived from the low-season price for three days. For 16 models the figure is the low-season price for three days divided by three — the Honda CB650F, for example, costs ฿2,700 for three days, which gives ฿900 daily. The other 13 are one-off daily rates. The difference shows up in odd pairs. The Honda Rebel 300 starts at ฿1,200 for a single day, while the larger Rebel 500 starts at ฿1,000, and the two figures come from different rentals and different units. Treat the 16 prices based on three days as the lower edge for a booking of at least three days outside the high season, and expect a shorter booking on the same bike to cost more.

Where a motorcycle starts and a scooter ends

A motorcycle in the city costs at least twice the cheapest scooter: scooters start from ฿200, motorcycles from ฿400. The step between them is the gearbox as much as the engine. The Honda MSX125 and the Yamaha M-Slaz 150 are small bikes with a manual gearbox, both at ฿400, and they are the gentlest way to learn clutch and gears before moving up. From 250 cc the choice widens quickly — the Honda CBR250 at ฿600, the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 at ฿700, and the Honda NX500, a 500 cc adventure bike, also at ฿600. For big bike rental in Pattaya the practical threshold sits around 500 cc: the 650-class nakeds and sports bikes begin at ฿900, and the 900-class bikes at ฿1,300. Does a first-time rider need that much power? Rarely, and a 300 or 500 cc bike is cheaper to rent and easier to handle in slow traffic.

Day rates from ฿400 to ฿4,000

Twenty-nine starting prices are enough to see where the market clusters, what sits at its edges and why one model can carry several prices.

Where the middle of the market sits

The middle of the market is ฿1,000 a day, and 16 of the 29 motorcycles start at that figure or below it. Roughly a quarter start under ฿850 and a quarter at ฿1,300 or more, so the central half of the range spans just ฿450. The busiest band is ฿1,000–1,499, with 12 models — from the Kawasaki Vulcan S and the Honda Rebel 500 at ฿1,000 to the Kawasaki Z900 and the Yamaha XSR900 at ฿1,300. Only six bikes start at ฿1,500 or more. For a first budget for motorcycle rental in Pattaya, ฿900–1,200 daily covers most of the 650-class bikes, from the Yamaha MT-07 to the Honda CBR650R. The step up to a 900-class naked — the Kawasaki Z900 at ฿1,300 or the Yamaha MT-09 at ฿1,500 — adds ฿400–600 a day, and that money buys power rather than comfort.

The Harley at the top

The Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce starts at ฿4,000 a day, four times the market middle and about 2.4 times the next most expensive bike, the Ducati Monster 937 at ฿1,700. That figure is a single rate for every Harley at its rental and applies to the first three days; for days four to seven it falls to ฿3,800, and from the eighth to the fourteenth to ฿3,500. Is a heavy cruiser worth the premium? For a slow ride and the look of the bike, perhaps — but two other cruisers, the Kawasaki Vulcan S and the Honda Rebel 500, start at ฿1,000 each. The rules differ too: the Harley needs a rider aged 21 or older and a ฿20,000 deposit, and on a tight budget that deposit weighs as much as the day rate.

One model, three prices

The same model can carry three different prices in one city. The Honda CB650R starts at ฿1,200 on a three-day low-season rate, costs ฿1,500 for a single day at another rental, and ฿2,000 in its version with an electronic clutch. The Yamaha XSR900 is offered in two generations, and the Ducati Monster comes as the 795, the 821 and the 937 — ฿900, ฿1,500 and ฿1,700. Behind such gaps sit the rental unit, the season, the generation of the bike and each rental's own pricing. The price on a model card is therefore a floor and a guide to the class, not a quote for your dates: before booking, ask for the total for your exact number of days, and ask which generation of the model you will actually get.

Naked, sport, adventure, retro and cruiser bikes

The 29 models fall into six riding classes, and the class says more about price, comfort and the kind of riding than the make does.

Naked bikes, the largest group

Naked bikes make up 11 of the 29 models, from the Honda CB500F at ฿700 to the Ducati Monster 937 at ฿1,700. The middle of the group is crowded: the Kawasaki Z650, the Yamaha MT-07, the Honda CB650F and the Ducati Monster 795 all start at ฿900, and the Suzuki GSX-S750 and the Honda CB650R at ฿1,200. Engines differ more than prices suggest — the GSX-S750 and the CB650R use inline-four engines, the Monster 795 a V-twin. Above them sit the Kawasaki Z900 at ฿1,300, and the Yamaha MT-09 and the Ducati Monster 821 at ฿1,500. For motorbike rental in Pattaya, a naked bike is the safest all-round pick: an upright position for town, enough power for a ride out of the city and the widest spread of prices. Stay in the 650 class unless you already ride something bigger at home.

Sport and sport-touring bikes

Five models are faired sports or sport-touring bikes, priced from ฿1,000 to ฿1,500. The Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the Honda CBR500R start at ฿1,000, the Yamaha R7 and the inline-four Honda CBR650R at ฿1,200, and the Suzuki GSX-S1000F, a sport-tourer, at ฿1,500. The smaller CBR250 and CBR300R belong here by style but sit in the small-bike group by size, at ฿600 and ฿800. A full fairing means a forward-leaning riding position — fine for an hour on an open road, tiring in stop-and-go traffic at midday. And the price gives no reason to put up with it in town: the Ninja 650 costs ฿100 more than the Kawasaki Z650, and the CBR650R the same as the naked CB650R. So if most of the riding stays in the city, take the naked version of the same engine.

Adventure, neo-retro and cruiser bikes

  • Adventure: the Honda NX500 from ฿600 and the Honda CB500X from ฿1,000, two 500 cc bikes with an upright seat and the cheapest route to a bigger machine.
  • Neo-retro: the Yamaha XSR900 from ฿1,300 and the 700 cc XSR700 from ฿1,500, classic styling over modern engines, priced level with the large nakeds.
  • Small retro: the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 from ฿700, the cheapest bike with classic lines in the section and a 350 cc engine.
  • Cruisers: the Kawasaki Vulcan S and the 471 cc Honda Rebel 500, both from ฿1,000, and the Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce from ฿4,000.
  • Choosing by class: two Japanese cruisers at ฿1,000 cost a quarter of the Harley, so pay that premium only for the Harley name itself.

Small manual bikes from 125 to 350 cc

Six models below 400 cc start from ฿400 to ฿1,200, and their daily price drops further than that of any big bike on a longer rental.

Six small bikes and their rates

Manual minis after an automatic scooter

The Honda MSX125 and the Yamaha M-Slaz 150 are the two cheapest motorcycles in the section, both at ฿400, and both have a manual gearbox. That makes them the natural next step after an automatic scooter: a similar small size, but with a clutch lever and a gear pedal to learn. Over longer rentals the daily price falls sharply — the MSX125 drops to ฿270 a day from three days and ฿230 from seven, while the M-Slaz costs ฿2,100 for a week and ฿5,500 for 30 days. A newer MSX125 costs ฿500 for one day at the same rental, ฿100 more than the older one. If you have never ridden with a clutch, spend the first day on one of these two in quiet streets: stalling a 125 cc bike costs nothing, while stalling a 900 cc naked in a busy junction can cost a fall.

250 to 350 cc: sport, retro and cruiser

Four bikes between 250 and 350 cc cover three riding styles for ฿600 to ฿1,200. The Honda CBR250 at ฿600 and the CBR300R at ฿800 are small faired sports bikes, the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 at ฿700 is a compact retro roadster, and the Honda Rebel 300 at ฿1,200 is a small cruiser. The deposit rises with size: one rental asks ฿2,000 for bikes up to 160 cc and ฿5,000 for 300–350 cc models. The Rebel 300 shows how quickly a one-day price shrinks — ฿800 from three days and ฿690 from seven, a cut of more than 40 per cent. For a rider moving up from a scooter, a 300 cc bike is the sensible middle ground, and booked for a week it costs less daily than a 650 cc naked on a three-day rate.

Three days, a week or a month

Every rental with time-based rates cuts the daily rate for longer bookings, and over a month the cut is far deeper than over a week.

Week and month against the daily rate

ModelDaily or shortOne weekOne month
Honda CB500X฿1,000฿3,500฿8,000
Honda CBR500R฿1,000฿4,000฿10,000

Honda CB650F฿2,700 for 3 days฿6,000฿17,000 for 30 days

How fast the per-day price falls

A week costs between half and three quarters of seven single days on the bikes with weekly prices. The Honda CB500X costs ฿1,000 for one day, ฿2,700 for three and ฿3,500 for a week — ฿500 a day, half the one-off rate. The Royal Enfield Hunter 350 falls from ฿700 to ฿600 a day over three days and to ฿500 over a week. At the rental that prices by one, three and seven days, the cut from one day to seven is 37.5 per cent on the Honda CBR300R and 42.5 per cent on the MSX125 and the Rebel 300. For motorcycle hire in Pattaya lasting five days or more, ask for the weekly price first: on the CB500X, the CBR500R and the XSR700 a whole week costs less than five single days, and on the Hunter 350 exactly the same.

A month on a big bike

A month brings the daily price down by about two thirds. The Honda CB500X costs ฿8,000 for a month, about ฿267 a day over 30 days, against ฿1,000 for a single day; the CBR500R costs ฿10,000, about ฿333. On the bigger bikes the month costs more but stays modest per day: the Yamaha XSR700 is ฿16,000, about ฿533, and the Honda CB650F ฿17,000 for 30 days in the low season, about ฿567. The CB650F rates show the steps in between — ฿2,700 for 3 days, ฿6,000 for 7, ฿9,500 for 14 and ฿13,500 for 21. The result is surprising: a monthly CB500X at about ฿267 costs less daily than a three-day rental of the cheapest 125 cc bike, which is ฿270. For a stay of a month, price the big bike before settling for a small one.

The Harley's slower discount

The Harley-Davidson rate falls far more slowly than the others: ฿4,000 a day for one to three days, ฿3,800 for four to seven and ฿3,500 for eight to fourteen. That is a cut of 12.5 per cent at most, against 37.5–42.5 per cent for a week on the small Hondas. If the ฿3,800 rate covers a whole seven-day booking, a week on the Harley costs ฿26,600 — more than the ฿17,000 a Honda CB650F costs for 30 days. No monthly Harley price is given. Behind the gap is a different kind of rental: a specialist with one make and a single price for every model, rather than a mixed line-up priced by size. The Harley therefore works best as a one- or two-day treat inside a longer stay on a cheaper bike, not as the bike for the whole trip.

Licence, age, deposit and helmets

Rental rules for motorcycles differ from one desk to the next, but the licence requirement comes from Thai law and applies to every bike in this section.

Licence category and the IDP

Thai law requires a motorcycle-category licence to ride any of these bikes: either a Thai licence, or your home licence together with an International Driving Permit that carries the motorcycle entitlement. A car licence on its own does not cover a motorcycle, and neither does a permit issued only for cars. The Harley rental states the same rule in its own words — a valid Thai or international motorcycle licence. On the nearby island of Koh Larn, police have required rental shops to check licences before handing over a bike and to make sure tourists wear helmets. Check the categories on your home licence and on the permit before you travel: if the motorcycle entry is missing from either, no rental desk can fix it on the spot.

Age limits of 18 and 21

Most rentals set the minimum age at 18, and some ask for 21 on larger models. The Harley-Davidson rental is one of them, with 21 as its stated minimum for every bike. The rule belongs to each rental rather than to the model, so a 650 cc naked may be open to an 18-year-old at one desk and closed at another. For riders aged 18 to 20 the small-bike group — the MSX125, M-Slaz 150, CBR250 and CBR300R — is the most realistic shortlist, and it is also the cheapest, from ฿400 to ฿800. Older riders face no age question on most bikes. Whatever your age, mention it when you ask about a specific model: an age limit found at the counter means starting the search again on the day you wanted to ride.

Deposits by bike size

  • Up to 160 cc: one rental asks a ฿2,000 deposit for scooters and bikes of this size, which covers the MSX125 and the M-Slaz 150.
  • 300–350 cc: the same list asks ฿5,000, the band of the CBR300R, the Rebel 300 and the Hunter 350.
  • Mid-size Ducati: the Ducati Monster 795 carries an ฿8,000 deposit at the rental that offers it.
  • Harley-Davidson: ฿20,000 for every Harley, four times the deposit for a 300 cc bike.
  • Passport: at least one big-bike rental takes no passport as a deposit and returns the deposit in full in any currency — ask before handing over documents.

Helmets, pickup areas and handover

Helmets for both rider and passenger come with the bike at some rentals, and on Koh Larn wearing one is enforced through the rental shops. Pickup points are spread across the area. The small Hondas priced by one, three and seven days are rented from Pratumnak and North Pattaya, the Harley rental is based in Huay Yai in Banglamung district, and the CB500X, CBR500R, Hunter 350 and XSR700 are rented in Pattaya City. The address changes the real cost of a rental, because getting to a desk outside the centre takes time and a taxi each way. Ask where the bike is handed over before comparing prices, and at handover photograph it from all sides with the fuel level and the odometer in the frame — a two-minute record that settles most arguments about damage when the deposit comes back.

Key points before you pick a bike

Five figures to keep in mind

  • Day rate: the 29 motorcycles start between ฿400 and ฿4,000, and 16 of them at ฿1,000 or less.
  • Price unit: 16 prices come from a three-day low-season rate, so a single day on the same bike can cost more.
  • Class: 11 naked bikes from ฿700 to ฿1,700 give the widest choice, while the ฿4,000 Harley stands alone.
  • Longer rentals: a week costs half to three quarters of seven single days, and a month on a 500 cc Honda about ฿267 a day.
  • Rules: a motorcycle-category licence or a permit with that category, a minimum age of 18 or 21, and deposits from ฿2,000 to ฿20,000.

FAQ

How much does motorcycle rental in Pattaya cost?

The 29 models on this page start from ฿400 a day for the Honda MSX125 and the Yamaha M-Slaz 150 and go up to ฿4,000 for the Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce. The middle of the range is ฿1,000, and 16 models start at that figure or below. Sixteen of the prices come from a low-season rate for three days, so a single day on the same bike can cost more.

Do I need a motorcycle licence to rent a big bike in Pattaya?

Yes. Thai law requires a motorcycle-category licence: either a Thai licence, or your home licence together with an International Driving Permit that carries the motorcycle entitlement. A car licence on its own does not cover a motorcycle. On Koh Larn, police have required rental shops to check licences before handing over a bike.

What is the minimum age to rent a motorcycle?

Most rentals set it at 18, and some ask for 21 on larger models. The Harley-Davidson rental states 21 as its minimum for every bike. The rule belongs to each rental, so mention your age when you ask about a specific model.

How much is the deposit for a rental motorcycle?

It grows with the bike. One rental asks ฿2,000 for bikes up to 160 cc and ฿5,000 for 300–350 cc models; the Ducati Monster 795 carries an ฿8,000 deposit, and every Harley-Davidson ฿20,000. At least one big-bike rental takes no passport as a deposit and returns the deposit in full in any currency.

Is it cheaper to rent a motorcycle for a week or a month?

Much cheaper per day. The Honda CB500X costs ฿1,000 for one day, ฿3,500 for a week and ฿8,000 for a month, about ฿267 a day over 30 days. The Honda CBR500R costs ฿4,000 for a week and ฿10,000 for a month, and the Honda CB650F ฿17,000 for 30 days in the low season.

How much does a Harley-Davidson cost per day in Pattaya?

฿4,000 a day for one to three days, ฿3,800 for four to seven days and ฿3,500 for eight to fourteen days — a single rate for every Harley at that rental. The rider must be 21 or older, and the deposit is ฿20,000.

What is the cheapest manual motorcycle to rent?

The 125 cc Honda MSX125 and the 150 cc Yamaha M-Slaz 150, both from ฿400 a day with a manual gearbox. The MSX125 drops to ฿270 a day from three days and ฿230 from seven; the M-Slaz costs ฿2,100 for a week and ฿5,500 for 30 days.

Are helmets included with a rental motorcycle?

At some rentals, helmets for both rider and passenger come with the bike. Ask about it when you book, and on Koh Larn expect the rental shop to make sure you wear one.

Why does the same model have different prices?

Because the price unit, the generation of the bike and each rental's pricing differ. The Honda CB650R starts at ฿1,200 a day on a three-day low-season rate, costs ฿1,500 for a single day at another rental and ฿2,000 a day with an electronic clutch. Ask for the total for your exact number of days.

Which motorcycle suits a first big bike?

A bike between 300 and 500 cc. The Honda NX500 starts at ฿600, the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 at ฿700, the Honda CBR300R at ฿800 and the Honda CB500X at ฿1,000. The 650-class nakeds and sports bikes begin at ฿900, and the 900-class bikes at ฿1,300.
