What Fuel and Roads Cost

Georgia charges nothing for its international and domestic roads: the Roads Department confirmed on 10.06.2026 that use of them "remains free of charge", with no change planned, and no vignettes or transponders exist. The 52 km Rikoti section of the E60 east–west route, opened 29.12.2025 at a cost of about 2.6 billion lari, carries 51 tunnels and 97 bridges across four lanes and is free as well. Fill up before you leave the city.

Parking and Mountain Roads

Street parking in the capital is zonal: from 1 lari an hour with the first 15 minutes free, paid through the Tbilisi Parking app or a terminal. Underground car parks in the centre charge differently — around 2–3 lari an hour at Freedom Square, roughly 7 lari a day at Rike, 1–2 lari an hour at Orbeliani Square. From 1 December to 1 March winter tyres are compulsory, and chains on at least two front wheels in government-designated zones during bad weather. The Military Highway to Stepantsminda runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border through Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri, topping out at the 2,379 m Jvari Pass. Upper sections see landslides and snow, and the pass closes when avalanche risk is high — check conditions the morning you leave, not the night before.

The Mountain Roads

The Military Road to Kazbegi runs 153 km from Freedom Square, past Ananuri and Gudauri at 121 km, over the Jvari pass at 2,379 m and down to Stepantsminda. Gudauri sits at 2,200 m and normally takes 2–2.5 hours each way. In winter, winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, and chains on at least two front wheels may be required in government-defined zones. Check the road status the morning you leave, not the evening before.

Borjomi is 160 km and Bakuriani 184 km, Vardzia 225 km — a full day, and one worth starting early. One-way to Batumi is 358 km and is arranged when you book; Yerevan is 274 km, and a rental car goes there only with our driver.

A trip to Armenia is possible only with our driver; the Sadakhlo–Bagratashen crossing sits about 70 km south of the city. Azerbaijan's land border has been closed to passengers since 2020, so a Ford cannot be driven in that direction.
