Which licence lets a foreign visitor drive a hired car here

A non-ASEAN visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention; section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act is the rule behind that. Citizens of ASEAN countries drive on their national licence with no permit. Thailand signed the 1949 convention, so the permit is recognised alongside your national card, not instead of it. The police fine for driving without a permit runs ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident.

What changes for a foreign visitor renting a car in Bangkok

Left-hand traffic, right-hand drive and the speed limits

Traffic in Thailand keeps to the LEFT and every car we hand over is right-hand drive, so the driver sits on the right and the gear lever falls under the left hand. Speed limits are 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on the motorway, 110 km/h on the expressways and 100 km/h on elevated sections; a sign may lower any of them. The compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) rides with the registered car and covers injury to third parties, while first-class (Class 1) insurance covers damage to the car itself — its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. Set the mirrors before you pull away, and pick your first drive outside the evening peak.

Toll roads, Easy Pass and M-Flow

• City expressways (EXAT): Chaloem Maha Nakhon and Si Rat take cash or an Easy Pass / M-PASS tag; the two tags are interchangeable, but one car carries one tag.
• Motorway 7 to Pattaya: 149.3 km of tolled road; a car pays ฿25 to Bang Bo, ฿100 to Pong and ฿105 to Pattaya from the Lat Krabang entry.
• Motorway 9 (Kanchanaphisek): runs barrier-free on M-Flow, where a camera reads the number plate instead of a boom gate.
• M-Flow billing: without a registered tag you pay within 2 days by plate number; from the third day the tariff doubles, then the tariff plus 2× plus a 10× tariff fine.
• Don Muang Tollway: 28.1 km over Vibhavadi Rangsit Road from Din Daeng to Don Mueang, with a toll for the run to the airport.

Timing your hand-over around the traffic

Hand-over works best when it is not fighting the city. The run from Don Mueang to the old centre is 27.4 km, about 40 minutes without traffic, and peak hours stretch it. If you are heading straight for Pattaya or Hua Hin, ask for an early hand-over and leave before the peak rather than sitting in it.

• Class and model: you name the class — Economy, Electric, Crossovers, Minivans, Comfort, Premium, SUV and 4x4, Pickup trucks, Sports, Luxury or Exotic — and we match the model, from Nissan March and Suzuki Ciaz up to the Exotic and Sports cars.
• Dates and rental length: rental is available from 1 day, and weekly and monthly bookings are confirmed at the same time as the daily rate.
• Delivery address, date and time: any address in the city, Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang Airport (DMK); a delivery fee, if any, is agreed when booking.
• Driver details: the main driver's age and licence, so the manager can flag anything that belongs in the rental agreement before you commit.
• Payment and the security hold: a bank card in the main driver's name is used for the hold; the amount is set out in the rental agreement.

Two insurance layers sit behind every car we hand over, and the rental agreement is where their limits are written down.

Compulsory cover and Class 1 cover

Compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, covers injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car — it travels with the vehicle, not with the driver. First-class (Class 1) insurance covers damage to the car itself. The compulsory layer does not cover the bodywork. Read the Class 1 clause before you drive away, and if the excess figure matters to your budget, ask for it in writing when the booking is agreed.

Fines, cameras and who pays

Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so a notice from a camera on Motorway 7 arrives later and reaches you through us. Driving without an International Driving Permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim on top of that. Coverage questions that fall outside the two layers above belong in the agreement: the deposit, the excess and any young-driver condition are set out there or agreed when booking, and we would rather answer them before you sign than after.

The longer you keep the car, the lower the daily price works out. On this page the weekly rate is the daily rate multiplied by six, and the monthly rate is the daily rate multiplied by twenty-one — the same 115 cars, the same delivery, just a different billing period.

• Premium: 11 cars from ฿3,500 per day — ฿21,000 weekly and ฿73,500 monthly.
• Exotic: 4 cars from ฿35,000 per day — ฿210,000 weekly and ฿735,000 monthly.
• VAT 7%: already included in every figure shown, so the multiplier is the whole calculation.

Choosing a class when the car stays with you for weeks

For a stay measured in weeks rather than days, the class matters more than the price tag on day one. Electric is the largest class on this page at 32 cars from ฿1,050. If your month includes family or colleagues arriving, the 7-seat Toyota Veloz at ฿1,300 or the 7-seat Chevrolet Captiva at ฿1,600 covers the extra passengers without a second booking.
