What the transmission choice actually costs you

Six of the eight Toyotas are automatic and six are hybrid, so the manual-versus-automatic question only really bites at the two ends of the range: the Aygo at €16 and the Proace Verso at €70. Everything except the Aygo and the Proace Verso comes with an automatic gearbox, which matters on the right-hand side of the road and on the 30 km/h streets of the city centre. If you have never driven a left-hand-drive car, the automatic removes one thing to think about at the first roundabout.

ZBE València and what it means for a Toyota on hire

ZBE València (Zona de Bajas Emisiones) covers 27.8 km² inside Ronda Nord, avenidas de Tarongers and Serradora, and Bulevard Sud, and restricts cars without a DGT environmental sticker. Phase one, from 01.12.2025 to 31.12.2026, applies only to category A vehicles — petrol registered before 2001 and diesel before 2006 — that are registered outside the province of Valencia. From 01.01.2027 the same restriction extends to category A cars registered outside the city, and from 01.01.2028 it covers all category A cars, residents included.

Parking in the blue and orange zones

• Zona azul centro y ensanches: Ciutat Vella, L'Eixample and Extramurs — 1.00 EUR for 60 minutes, 1.70 EUR for 120 minutes, two hours maximum.
• Zona azul resto ciudad: the rest of the city — 0.80 EUR for 60 minutes, 1.50 EUR for 120 minutes, same two-hour cap.
• Zona naranja: mixed resident and rotation parking — 2.10 EUR for 60 minutes, 3.30 EUR for 120 minutes for non-residents, available only during rotation hours.
• Zona verde: residents with a permit only — not an option for a hire car.
• Payment: ElParking (operator EYSA) and Telpark both handle the ticket from a phone.

• Licence not in Spanish: it works either with an official sworn translation into Spanish, or if it was issued on the Geneva Convention Annex 9 or Vienna Convention Annex 6 model.
• International Driving Permit: the DGT advises getting one before you travel; it is a supporting document only and is shown together with your passport and your national licence, valid for one year.

Every car legally on Spanish roads carries Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil, and it is included by default: the limits are 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR for property damage, under Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2 as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025. That cover protects third parties — not the car and not the driver. Beyond it, the terms of the cover are set out in the rental agreement, and the excess is set out in the rental agreement. Spanish consumer rules give you a clear right at collection: every scratch and dent goes into the contract or the inspection sheet before you drive away, both sides sign it, and you keep a copy — otherwise the damage comes back to you. If the model you booked is not there, you can ask for another car at no extra cost, even one class up; if you are given a lower class, the price should drop. When the car does not match the agreed terms — automatic instead of manual, four doors instead of two — you may cancel and get any prepayment back. Photograph the car and the sheet on your phone before you pull out.
