How driving works on Koh Samui roads
Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, including both Mercedes-Benz models we rent out. A square blue hologram tax sticker sits on the windscreen, its year written in the Buddhist calendar (Gregorian plus 543), and a rental car must carry a current one. The legal alcohol limit is 50 mg% in blood, dropping to 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and for holders of temporary licences — the penalty runs to a year in prison, a ฿5,000–20,000 fine, or both, with a licence suspension of at least six months, and refusing the test counts as admission. All passengers, including the rear row, wear seatbelts. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is prohibited.

The ring road runs 51 km around the island and links the lowland and the coast, with every resort on it — Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam. Treat the accelerator as a tool for hills and overtaking gaps, not for making time.

Speed, fuel and parking
Fuel comes as E20, 91 and 95, paid mostly in cash — few stations take cards. Park away from red-and-white and yellow-and-white kerbs, and remember the police fine for driving without an International Driving Permit runs ฿500–1,000. The convertible roof is worth lowering on the west coast at sunset, not at midday in traffic.

Because traffic here keeps to the left and the car is right-hand drive, take the first kilometre slowly — the C-Class is a 2.0 L with 204 hp and the cabriolet a 1.8 L with the same 204 hp, and both are rear-wheel drive, so the throttle on a wet ring road is not the place to learn the car. Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) is attached to every registered car; first-class cover, its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. The security hold runs on a bank card in the main driver's name, and the amount is set out in the agreement.

The island's high season runs 20 December to 31 March, and the low season runs 1 April to 19 December. Rainfall runs its own calendar: February is the driest month at 64.3 mm across 4.3 rainy days, while November is the wettest at 444.6 mm over 16.5 days. October (294.9 mm) and December (263.1 mm) sit close behind, and the middle of October through early December brings the heaviest rain of the year, with flooded stretches of road and a higher risk on slick asphalt. Every Mercedes-Benz hire we arrange comes with compulsory motor insurance, known in Thailand as Por Ror Bor, and first-class cover on the car itself.
The tax sticker is worth a look before you drive away. Thai tax stickers are square and blue with a hologram, and the year printed on them follows the Buddhist calendar — add 543 to the Gregorian year to check it. A car on hire should carry a current one. Por Ror Bor is attached to every registered car in the country and covers injury to third parties; it travels with the vehicle, not with the driver, so it applies on the 51 km ring road exactly as it does anywhere else. Class 1 insurance covers damage to the car itself, and what it includes, along with the excess, is set out in the agreement.
