Which road to take and how to enter the city
Motorway 7 is the main route; the free alternative is Hwy 34 Bang Na–Trat to Hwy 3 Sukhumvit, and Motorway 9 links M7 to the outer ring of Bangkok. Coming from Don Mueang or the western side of the capital, M7 meets M9 at Thap Chang Interchange, which is the junction that decides your approach. From the motorway the Pattaya Motorway Spur drops you at Mab Prachan Interchange, then Nong Prue on road 3240, then Pattaya Interchange on Sukhumvit; further south a second spur at Ban Amphoe serves Na Jomtien. Speed limits step down as you close in: 120 km/h on M7, 90 km/h outside built-up areas, 80 km/h inside them. The sign always wins over the general limit, and Pattaya City is named a built-up area in law.

What moves the price
The class you pick is the single biggest lever. Crossovers and Comfort both start at ฿1,050, but Comfort holds six cars and Crossovers eight, so a 5-seat hybrid sedan and a 5-seat petrol crossover can sit at the same entry price while behaving differently on a 145.7 km motorway run. Minivans start at ฿1,290 and carry seven, SUV & 4x4 starts at ฿1,590 and carries seven with diesel or all-wheel drive, and the 12-seat vans, the Maxus MIFA 9 and the Alphard sit at the top — ฿4,280 for a Hyundai H-1, Maxus MIFA 9 or Toyota Commuter, ฿6,420 for the Alphard.

Rules that catch visitors out

A sign can lower the limit further, and on the motorway the 120 km/h limit is enforced primarily by speed cameras. Camera fines are issued to the car owner — that is, to us — and re-invoiced to the renter, so a fast run to Bangkok arrives as a bill rather than a roadside stop. The drink-drive threshold of 20 mg/dl applies to drivers under 20, holders of temporary licences, and drivers without a licence or with the wrong category; for any other driver, treat any alcohol before driving as a reason to hand the wheel to someone else. Everyone in the car wears a seatbelt, including the back row, and children under 6 travel in a TISI-standard child seat.

A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention; citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence.
