• Date: high season on the island runs 20 December – 31 March, and demand in that window is the heaviest of the year.

Who is allowed to drive, and who is not

When you book a chauffeur-driven car with Rent-Trip, the vehicle comes with a professional driver and you never take the wheel. Thailand requires a foreign visitor to hold a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention; section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act) — that rule applies to whoever drives, and in our service the driver is ours, not you. Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence. The police fine for driving without the correct documents is ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim. Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, so a passenger sits on the left — worth knowing when you plan who takes the front seat on the 51 km ring road.

What the car carries by law

• Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor): attached to every registered car and covers injury to third parties; it travels with the vehicle, not with the driver.

A car with a driver takes you along the 51 km ring road that links the lowland and the coast, with every resort on it: Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam. The island is 228.7 km² with a population of 70,059 (2019), so no transfer on it runs long — the point of hiring a car with a driver here is the stops you make on the way, not the distance.

• Samui Airport (USM): in Bo Phut, about 2 km north of Chaweng, and the one arrival point we deliver to, with the address, date and time agreed with a manager beforehand.
• Bophut and Fisherman's Village, Maenam, Choeng Mon, Big Buddha and Bang Rak: the northern beaches, all a short run from the airport.
• Nathon and Lipa Noi pier: the west-coast town and the ferry pier, where Raja Ferry Port runs the Don Sak crossing — about 1 h 30 min, hourly from 05:00 to 19:00 in both directions, 15 sailings.

For longer days out, the same car and driver cover the island's inland sights. Na Muang waterfall, the Secret Buddha Garden and the Lamai viewpoint are all day-trip distances from any coast. From Don Sak pier on the mainland, Khanom is 26.5 km or about 30 minutes, Surat Thani centre 66.1 km or about 61 minutes, Surat Thani airport (URT) 94.0 km or about 91 minutes, Khao Sok National Park 191.8 km or about 173 minutes, and Krabi 208.9 km or about 164 minutes. Those are machine-measured times without traffic.

Koh Phangan is the other direction, and the crossing works differently depending on the route.

Every car we hand over comes with two layers of cover: compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor), which is attached to the registered vehicle and covers injury to third parties, and first-class (Class 1) insurance, which covers damage to the car itself. A bank card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the agreement. That is the whole of what we can tell you about the deposit until the paperwork is in front of you.

• Por Ror Bor: compulsory cover attached to every registered car in Thailand; it pays for injury to third parties, not for damage to the vehicle you are sitting in.

Alcohol limits on the island are 50 mg% in the blood, dropping to 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences; the sanction runs to up to a year of imprisonment, a fine of ฿5,000–20,000, or both, plus a licence suspension of at least six months — and refusing the test is treated as an admission.
