What the rental agreement sets out

The deposit, the insurance excess, delivery fees and any discount are set out in the agreement, not fixed on this page. We agree the figures with you before the booking is fixed, together with the delivery address, date and time — the car comes to any address in Tbilisi or to either airport, and nothing about the hand-over is assumed in advance. What we can state plainly is the fuel rule: the car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank, and any missing fuel plus a refuelling service fee is charged as the agreement sets out. If a longer booking is what you have in mind, ask about the weekly or monthly rate when you book rather than after — that is the point where the class, the deposit and the excess are settled together.

• Split the trip by purpose: book the cheaper class for the city days and the 4x4 for the mountain stretch — two separate bookings can cost less than one long hire of the bigger car.

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 at $190 per day and the Land Cruiser 300 at $210 per day are our SUV & 4x4 class, both with all-wheel drive, 275 hp, automatic transmission and five seats. The S3 highway to Stepantsminda runs 139 km from Mtskheta to the Russian border, climbing through Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri to the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m. Gudauri itself sits at 2,200 m, roughly 2–2.5 hours from the capital by the usual run, and the ski season there lasts from early December to mid-April. On the upper stretches the road is exposed to landslides and snow, and the Jvari Pass is closed during avalanche risk.

Distances from Freedom Square are worth planning around: Mtskheta is 26 km, Ananuri 66 km, Gudauri 121 km, Stepantsminda 153 km, and the mountain resort of Bakuriani 184 km via Borjomi at 160 km. Every Toyota leaves us clean and with a full tank, and it must come back the same way — full-to-full. If the tank is not full on return, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the agreement. We do not offer a pre-paid tank or a full-to-empty option, so the rule is the same for a $35 Prius and a $210 Land Cruiser 300.

Booking your hand-over

The delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed — that single step settles where the car meets you, when, and under which terms. Bring the documents the agreement requires, and ask at booking which ones apply to your licence, since that depends on where it was issued. If your plans change, tell the manager early: moving a hand-over point inside the city is a different matter from moving it to Kutaisi.

• Driving licence: valid and in your name. Foreign licences are accepted in Georgia for up to 1 year from your date of entry, with no exchange needed.
• IDP or notarised translation: required only if your licence has neither Latin nor Cyrillic characters. Georgia is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention.
• Deposit: the amount is set out in the agreement, not fixed on this page, and is agreed when you book.

The recognition and exchange of foreign licences in Georgia is governed by the Law of Georgia on Road Traffic and an order of the Minister of Internal Affairs.

Insurance on a Toyota

Georgian-registered cars are not yet covered by compulsory third-party insurance: the government put its introduction into the autumn legislative work plan, with no date named. A Toyota with Georgian plates is not covered by the compulsory insurance for foreign vehicles either. Theft of personal belongings is not covered by standard insurance.

Speed limits in built-up areas are 60 km/h and 20 km/h in residential zones; outside built-up areas, category B is limited to 90 km/h, 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h with a light trailer. Seat belts are required for the driver and all front passengers — rear belts are not compulsory by law. Phones only via hands-free, both hands on the wheel. Children under 3 travel in the back in a child seat matched to height and weight; children under 6 must not be left alone in a parked car. The alcohol limit is 0.3 ‰. Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, with chains on at least two front wheels in government-designated zones under particular weather conditions. Fines run from 50 ₾ for speeding 15–40 km/h over the limit to 500 ₾ for driving without a licence, with a 20% discount if paid within 10 days.

Georgia's limits are 60 km/h in built-up areas and 20 km/h in residential zones, 90 km/h outside built-up areas for category B, and 110 km/h on motorways; with a light trailer the ceiling drops to 80 km/h. Children under 3 travel on the rear seat in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight, and a passenger aged 16 or over may hold a child on the rear seat instead; children under 6 must never be left alone in a parked car. • Tolls: none. Georgia's international and domestic roads remain free of charge, with no vignettes and no transponders.
• Street parking: from 1 ₾ per hour after the first 15 free minutes; pay through the Tbilisi Parking app or at parking meters.
• Towing: a parking fine runs 50 ₾, and recovery adds 150 ₾ plus 20 ₾ per day of storage.
