• Built-up areas: 80 km/h in Pattaya City, which the 1969 law names as a built-up area.
• Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h on ordinary roads.
• Motorway 7: 120 km/h, enforced primarily by speed cameras.
• Lower signs override the limit: a posted sign may reduce any of the figures above.
• Fines: up to ฿1,000, though the receipt usually comes in at ฿500.

Camera fines are issued to the car owner, which is the rental company, so on a Rent-Trip booking they are re-invoiced to the renter. The practical consequence: keep an eye on your speed on Motorway 7 rather than waiting for a letter.

Licences and the police fine

A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention; section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act). Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence without an IDP. Driving without the right documents carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim — so the permit is not a formality. Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) covers injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car. Fuel and the long-route calculation

Fuel is where a long route is won or lost. Retail Bangchak figures put gasohol 95 at ฿39.94 a litre, gasohol 91 at ฿39.57, E20 at ฿34.94, E85 at ฿30.88 and diesel B7 at ฿41.44 — Chonburi prices can differ by a few satang. For island runs the arithmetic changes shape: Koh Larn, 7.5 km offshore, has a passenger-only ferry, so the car stays parked at Bali Hai Pier and you cross on foot. For Koh Samet the car stays on the mainland at Ban Phe Pier; the Koh Chang ferries take cars, but taking a rental car across is agreed when booking, not promised on the page.
