Roads, tolls and the Cap de Creus access rule

• AP-7 Vila-seca — La Jonquera: the whole corridor down from the French border through Girona; toll-free since 01.09.2021.
• C-32 Maresme (Montgat — Palafolls): the coastal route towards Blanes and Lloret; barriers removed on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021.
• C-33 Barcelona — Montmeló: toll-free since 01.09.2021.
• C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and C-32 south (Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell): the only Generalitat tolls left; the Vallcarca barrier is 8.42 € and Cubelles 5.03 € in category 2. None of them sit on our routes.
• Cadaqués — Far de Cap de Creus road: access is controlled on set days and hours — 28–31 March and selected days in April and May, 9:30–19:00; 6, 7, 13, 14 and 20–30 June and every day from July to 13 September, 9:30–21:30; then set days in September and October up to 1 November. Cars then stop at Corral d'en Morell and the Moventis 33 shuttle runs to the lighthouse.

Fuel on this stretch runs at 1.94 €/l for Petrol 95 E5 across the province of Girona, with 250 filling stations, and 1.956 €/l on the coast across 58. Diesel sits at 1.922 €/l province-wide and 1.932 €/l on the coast.

Parking is where the coast bites. Lloret de Mar's Can Lloranes car park has 160 spaces and costs about 15 € a day from 23 June to 11 September, free outside that window; the Avinguda Alegries park-and-ride has 200 spaces, free for stays over 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre from 15 June to 15 September. In Girona the zona blava costs 1.20 €/h with a two-hour maximum, Monday to Saturday in working hours, 9:30–13 and 16–20.

What to watch on the road

Spain drives on the right, all our cars are left-hand drive, and the limits are 120 km/h on autopista and autovía, 90 km/h on carretera convencional. The ZBE de Girona applies from 15.09.2025, 7:00–20:00 Monday to Friday on working days, to cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona — Spanish rental fleets carry the badge, so a hire car is not restricted, and cameras read plates rather than stickers. Check the Cap de Creus calendar before you set off for the lighthouse: on a controlled day the car stays at Corral d'en Morell and the Moventis 33 shuttle takes you on.

Licence and passport rules

• EU/EEA licences: fully valid in Spain while they have not expired — no international permit and no translation are required.
• Non-EU licences: DGT advises getting an international driving permit before the trip and carrying it together with your passport and your national licence.
• Licences not in Spanish: valid either with an official certified translation into Spanish, or if they were issued on the Geneva Convention Annex 9 or Vienna Convention Annex 6 model.
• Passport or ID: the original document in the main driver's name — this is a company requirement, not a DGT rule.
• Six-month rule: six months after you take up residence in Spain, a third-country licence stops being valid and has to be exchanged.

Insurance that is always there, and the options on top

Every car legally on a Spanish road carries Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil, and it is included by law. Its limits are €70,000,000 per incident for personal injury, whatever the number of victims, and €15,000,000 per incident for property damage — the figures of Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2 as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025. It covers harm to third parties, not the driver and not the car itself.

The deposit is held against possible damage and extras on a card agreed when booking; the amount is confirmed to you before you sign, and it is set out in the agreement.
