In winter the upper sections see landslides and snow, and the Jvari pass is closed when there is avalanche risk, so a mountain day is worth building around a flexible date rather than a fixed one. On the ski road, winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March, and chains on at least two front wheels are required in government-defined zones under special weather conditions.

Longer runs: Borjomi, Bakuriani, Vardzia

Bakuriani sits at altitude and shares the same winter-tyre window as the mountain routes. Two travellers can take the BMW 320 at $80 a day for a city-to-Mtskheta run, while a group of five or six is better off in the 7-seat Marco Polo 250 d at $190 — on a long day the seat count decides the car, not the badge. Fuel on these trips is on the full-to-full rule: the car leaves with a full tank and comes back full. Petrol is 4.06 ₾ a litre and diesel 4.76 ₾ (21.09.2026), roughly 17% apart, which matters on a 450 km round trip. Georgia's international and domestic roads remain free of charge, so a long day costs fuel and the daily rate — nothing at a toll booth.

• No other option: a pre-paid tank or full-to-empty is not offered on this site, so plan each leg with a top-up in mind.

Roads: free, but not always open

Every international and domestic road in the country is free of charge. The Roads Department confirmed on 10.06.2026 that «use of Georgia's international and domestic roads remains free of charge», and no change is planned. The Rikoti pass on the E60 east–west corridor — 52 km, 51 tunnels, 97 bridges, four lanes, opened 29.12.2025 at a cost of about 2.6 billion ₾ — is likewise free to drive. The catch is the mountains. The S3 Georgian Military Road climbs to the Jvari pass at 2,379 m, and the upper sections close when avalanche risk is high; Gudauri sits at 2,200 m on that same road, usually 2–2.5 hours from the capital.

Parking: from 1 ₾ an hour

Payment runs through the Tbilisi Parking app or the on-street terminals, and the portal accepts a search by transit or foreign plate. A parking fine is 50 ₾; tow-away adds 150 ₾ plus 20 ₾ a day for storage. Under cover, Freedom Square runs about 2–3 ₾ an hour, Rike about 7 ₾ a day, and the first hour at Galleria roughly 2 ₾. Annual permits and the 800 ₾ all-inclusive pass exist but are pointless on a short hire. Our advice: hand the parking to the driver.
