Where the money goes at the top of the range

The upper end of the scale is ฿10,000 a day, and the two Convertibles (฿8,500 and ฿10,000) and the two Premium cars (฿3,500 and ฿8,000) are what fill it. The deposit, the insurance excess and any discount beyond the weekly and monthly multipliers are set out in the rental agreement, which is where you will find them stated in full for your specific car.

Booking early in high season is the practical move: the Convertibles and Premium tiers are two cars each.

The contract itself has been controlled by the OCPB since 30 December 2025: it is written in Thai, and every fee and penalty is disclosed in it. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so a missed payment follows you, not the car.

When you arrive

We meet you with the car at the time agreed with a manager, and the address, date and time are confirmed in the same message where you confirm your flight. If your licence is hard to read, or you hold an older paper document, say so when booking — it is easier to settle that in advance than at the kerb. Driving here keeps to the left, and every car is right-hand drive, which is worth a minute of practice before you join the ring road.

Driving on Koh Samui with your airport car rental

The ring road and where it takes you

• The 51 km ring road: it links the lowland and the coast and passes every resort area — Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam all sit on it.
• Surface hazards: potholes, sometimes deep, standing water after rain, and oil patches left by refuse trucks.
• Animals on the road: animals wander onto the asphalt.

The airport at Bo Phut lies about 2 km north of Chaweng; by road the run to Chaweng Noi is about 8.0 km, around 11 minutes.

Rain, fuel and paperwork on the road

October to December is the wettest window: November alone averages 444.6 mm over 16.5 rainy days, and the middle of October into early December brings the heaviest falls of the year. Flooded sections of road and slippery asphalt are the two things to plan around, so allow more time and keep the speed down in standing water.

Fuel on the island is E20, 91 and 95, and most stations take cash only — cards are accepted at few of them. Fill up before a long inland loop rather than on the way back.

The documents that let you drive are your home licence plus an International Driving Permit, unless you hold an ASEAN national licence. Driving without the permit carries a fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim. A bank card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold, with the amount set out in the rental agreement. Children under 6 must ride in a child seat to the TISI standard, and everyone in the car wears a seat belt, including the back row.

For anyone staying a full season, the arithmetic is worth doing before you choose the car rather than after: a month at ฿15,750 for the cheapest model and a month at ฿35,700 for a seven-seat diesel SUV are both monthly rates, and the gap between them is the price of two extra seats and a diesel SUV body.

Insurance and hand-over for car rental at Samui International Airport (USM)
