• AP-7 corridor: the motorway running Barcelona — Girona — the French border; free since 01.09.2021, so no barrier stops on the way north.
• C-32 Maresme: the coastal route from Barcelona towards Blanes and Lloret; barriers were removed on the night of 31 August to 1 September 2021.
• Speed limits: 120 km/h on autopista and autovía, 90 km/h on carretera convencional such as GI-614, GI-682 and C-260.

Where the driving gets slow

Access to the Cap de Creus road past Cadaqués is restricted through the season — daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September — so the far north-east tip needs planning rather than a spur-of-the-moment turn.

Parking: blue zones, green zones and resort car parks

• Girona, zona blava: Monday to Saturday in working hours, 9:30–13:00 and 16:00–20:00, at 1.20 EUR per hour with a two-hour maximum (2.40 EUR); the Sant Narcís area keeps different hours.
• Girona, zona verda (non-residents): the same 1.20 EUR per hour and two-hour cap, with Pedreres–Vista Alegre running Monday to Friday 9:30–13:00 and 17:00–20:00 plus Saturday mornings, and Güell–Devesa Monday to Saturday 8:00–20:00.
• Lloret de Mar, Can Lloranes: 160 spaces at roughly 15 EUR per day between 23 June and 11 September, free outside that window.
• Lloret de Mar, Avinguda Alegries: 200 park-and-ride spaces, free when you stay longer than 12 hours, with a free bus ticket into the centre between 15 June and 15 September.
• Lloret de Mar, zona blava: zone A covers Tarradellas and Francesc Macià all year with seasonal hours; zone C covers Fenals, Canyelles, Boadella and Can Lloranes between 23 June and 11 September.

Tolls along the coast corridor

The AP-7 between Vila-seca and La Jonquera — the whole Barcelona–Girona–French border corridor — has been toll-free since 1 September 2021, and the C-32 Maresme stretch from Montgat to Palafolls lost its barriers in the same changeover. The C-33 from Barcelona to Montmeló is free as well. What remains paid in Catalonia sits away from this coast: the C-16 towards the Cadí and the southern C-32 towards Castelldefels, Sitges and El Vendrell, where the Vallcarca barrier charges 8.42 EUR and Cubelles 5.03 EUR in category 2. None of those fall on a Costa Brava route. Catalonia is discussing a return to charging for fast roads through a vignette or a distance-based system, but no decision has been taken.

What to settle with the manager before the booking is fixed

• Fuel policy: the car is supplied with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank (lleno-lleno); no other option is offered.
• Your documents: the requirements are set out in the rental agreement and agreed when booking rather than assumed.

What the rental agreement should carry

The declared price has to include every mandatory charge you cannot drive without — the compulsory third-party insurance among them. Damage noted at hand-over must be written into the agreement or the inspection record before you leave, signed by both sides, with a copy kept by the renter; anything not recorded can later be charged to you. If the model you booked is unavailable, you may ask for another car at no extra cost, even a class above, and if you are given a lower class the price should drop. If the car does not match the agreed terms, the booking can be cancelled and the prepayment returned. Compulsory third-party cover is included in any hire by Spanish law: €70,000,000 per incident for personal injury and €15,000,000 for property damage under Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, art. 4.2 as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025. That cover protects third parties — not the car itself, which is where the excess in your agreement applies.

Local rules worth knowing before you drive off

• Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona: in force since 15.09.2025, 7–20 on working weekdays, from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell; cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are restricted, with 24 days a year allowed inside the restricted hours without a permit.
• Cameras read plates: you do not display the badge — Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT environmental badge, and cars with a sticker face no restriction.
• Speed limits: 120 km/h on autopista and autovía (AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33), 90 km/h on carretera convencional (GI-614, GI-682, C-260).
• Tolls: the AP-7 corridor from Vila-seca to La Jonquera is toll-free, as are C-32 Maresme and C-33 — there are no toll barriers on the Costa Brava routes.
