E-Bikes in Madrid: Hourly, Day and Week Rates, Models and Deposits

Fleet manager
Published Updated

E-bike rental in Madrid starts from €20 for a day at a park rental point, €18–25 for two hours in the centre and €110 for a full week, while a premium city model can reach €53 a day. Below: what kind of bike you actually get, how the hourly, daily and weekly prices compare, which models stand behind them, where the bikes are handed over, what you leave as a deposit and how far one charge takes you.

How pedal-assist rental works in the city

An electric bike in Madrid is a pedal-assist bicycle, not a moped: the motor adds force only while you pedal, and that single fact shapes the price, the paperwork and the way you plan a day on two wheels.

What you rent: a bicycle with a battery

The bikes offered in the city are pedelecs — ordinary bicycles with a small motor and a battery that add power to every pedal stroke. You still steer, brake and pedal yourself; the motor turns a climb into something close to flat ground and makes a long ride feel shorter. The electric mountain bikes on the market state the usual figures for this class: a 36-volt system and a 250-watt motor. That is why the rental works like a bicycle rental rather than a scooter or motorbike one. There are no plates and no fuel, and the handover is short: the bike with a charged battery, a helmet and a reflective vest, a form to sign and a deposit.

Ways to rent: by the hour, the day, the week or with a guide

The market offers five working modes: self-ride, hourly, daily, weekly or monthly, and guided tours. Hourly and half-day rentals suit a first look at Madrid — a loop through a park, a ride along the river, a crossing from one district to another. Renting from opening to closing suits a full outing with stops. A weekly rate suits a longer stay when the bike replaces the metro for everyday trips. A guided tour adds a person who knows the route and sets the pace, which helps if you have never ridden in a large city before.

Who gets the most out of an e-bike here

Madrid is not a flat city. The centre sits higher than the river valley to the west, and many streets between the two climb steadily. On an ordinary bicycle those slopes decide where you go; on a pedelec they stop mattering. In my view, the electric version earns its higher price on three kinds of trip: rides that end uphill, rides longer than an hour or two, and rides with someone less fit than you, where assist evens out the pace. For a short flat loop in a single park an ordinary bicycle does the same job for less money, as the comparison in the last sections shows.

Hourly, day and week rates

The price depends first on the rental unit, and the same e-bike can look cheap or expensive depending on which unit you compare.

Rental unitMarket pricePer-day equivalentWhat the price covers
2 hours€18–25—One e-bike for a short ride in the centre
5 hours€39—One e-bike for half a day
Day€20–53€20–53One e-bike from opening to closing
Day, electric mountain bike€50€50One e-MTB, flat daily fee
Week€110about €15.70One e-bike for seven days

Hourly rates fall with every extra hour

Short rentals are priced in blocks, not by a flat hourly tariff. In the centre two hours start from €18 at one counter and €25 at another, which is €9–12.50 an hour. Five hours cost €39, or €7.80 an hour — almost 40% less per hour than the €25 two-hour block at the same counter. The practical rule is simple: if you are unsure whether you need two hours or four, book the longer block. The difference in total is small, and you avoid riding back early with an eye on the clock.

Why the day rate runs from €20 to €53

The daily rate has the widest spread of any unit, and the gap comes from the bike, not the calendar. €20 is the starting price of an e-bike for the day at a rental point by a park. A city e-bike such as the NMC Milano costs €31–35 a day, and the Freeel Urban, a more expensive city model, costs €50–53. Electric mountain bikes sit at a flat €50 a day. So before you compare two daily quotes, check that they are for the same type of bike: a quote of €20 and a quote of €50 can both be fair prices for two very different machines.

When the weekly rate pays off

A week costs €110, which works out to about €15.70 per day — below even the cheapest daily price on the market. For a longer stay, this is the cheapest way into electric bike hire in Madrid. Measured against €20 a day, the weekly rate becomes the better deal from the sixth day; measured against a city model at €31 a day, it wins from the fourth. If you plan to ride on most days of a stay of five days or more, ask for the weekly price first and only then compare it with paying day by day. For stays of several weeks, a monthly mode also exists on the market, but no monthly price is confirmed for e-bikes in Madrid, so ask for one directly rather than extrapolating from the weekly figure.

City e-bikes, folding models and e-MTBs

Behind the price table stand three families of bikes: full-size city e-bikes, compact and folding models, and electric mountain bikes.

e-MTB S/M/LElectric mountain bike, 36 V, 250 Wup to 40 km€50 a day

Full-size city models

The NMC Milano is the reference city e-bike: it is offered for riders from 150 to 200 cm tall, which covers most adults without a frame change, and it costs €31–35 a day. The Freeel Urban belongs to the same family at a higher price, €50–53 a day. The Galvani Adult E-Bike L-XL is a low-frame model with a stated 40 km range — a low frame makes it easy to step through at traffic lights and when stopping often in the old streets, which matters more in the centre than any difference in motor.

Folding and compact models

The Pedego Latch folds, the A2B Kuo is a folding model sized for teenagers and the Tilt S is a compact bike; all three state a range of 30 km. All four of the city and compact models in the five-hour block cost the same €39, so the choice between them is about fit, not price. A folding frame is useful if you plan to take the bike into a hotel room or a lift; a teenager's size matters if you ride as a family, because a child on an adult frame is uncomfortable after the first half hour.

Electric mountain bikes

The e-MTBs come in S, M and L frames with 26-, 27- and 28-inch wheels, a 36-volt system, a 250-watt motor and a range of up to 40 km, at a flat €50 a day. They are built for dirt paths and steep gravel rather than the paving of the centre. Choose one if your plan is a long ride on unpaved trails outside the city blocks; for sightseeing on asphalt a city model is lighter to handle and cheaper.

Pick-up points: the centre, Retiro and bike-share stations

Most rental counters are in the historic centre, within walking distance of the main squares, and the public bike-share covers the rest of the city.

Counters in the historic centre

Two pick-up points stand out on the market. One is on Calle de los Jardines, a short walk from Puerta del Sol; the other is on Calle de Santiago, in the old quarter between Sol and the Royal Palace. Both hand over e-bikes by the hour, and the counter near Sol also rents by the week. Starting from the centre means that the first minutes of the ride are on busy streets with pedestrians and delivery vans, so ask the staff for the quietest way out towards the parks or the river before you set off.

The rental point by Retiro Park

The day price of €20 belongs to a rental point at Retiro Park. Picking up there puts you straight onto the park's wide paths, which is the gentlest start possible if you have never ridden a pedelec before: you can get used to the assist levels and the brakes away from traffic. The same point also rents ordinary city, mountain and trekking bikes, which makes it convenient for a mixed group where not everyone wants a motor.

BiciMAD, the public bike-share

Alongside the rental counters, Madrid runs a public bike-share with 8,385 electric bikes at 683 stations across 21 districts. It works differently from a rental: you take a bike at one station and leave it at another, and you pay per 30 minutes rather than per day. The first and second 30-minute periods cost €0.50 each; from the 60th minute on, every further 30 minutes costs €3. That makes the bike-share the cheapest option for a one-way trip of up to an hour, and an expensive one for a long outing: two hours cost €7, three hours €13, and a full eight-hour day would reach €43 — more than most daily rentals.

Opening hours

Pick-up and return times at the counters change between summer and winter. Check the return time on the day of your booking, especially in winter, so that you do not have to cut a ride short or pay for an extra block.

Deposit, ID, age and the rules of the road

The paperwork for an e-bike is light, but there are a few conditions that are worth knowing before you arrive at the counter.

What you leave at the counter

  • Deposit: a counter in the centre asks for a €200 deposit; it is returned when the bike comes back undamaged.
  • ID document: an identity document is required to sign the rental contract.
  • Driving licence: no driving licence is mentioned for e-bike rental in Madrid.
  • Minors: under-18s ride only together with an adult.
  • Equipment: a helmet and a reflective vest are included in the rental at the same counter.

How to plan for the deposit

€200 is a deposit, not a charge, but it is money you will not have on hand for the length of the rental. Ask in advance how it is taken — card hold or cash — and how quickly it is released after the return. For a weekly rental, the deposit stays blocked for the whole week, so take it into account in your travel budget. Take photos of the bike from every side before you leave the counter; if a scratch is already there, it should not be deducted from your deposit later.

Where you may and may not ride

Madrid's mobility ordinance forbids cycling on pavements, pedestrian streets and pedestrian zones. The exceptions are shared pavement cycle paths, marked as aceras-bici, and children under 12 riding with an adult at walking pace. In practice this means riding on the road or on a cycle lane, never between pedestrians on the pavement, even for a short stretch. In the old centre many streets are pedestrian-only; there you get off and push the bike. The helmet and vest the rental includes are worth wearing: they cost nothing extra, and the vest makes you visible to drivers when the light falls.

Range, routes and the alternatives

A pedelec battery is enough for a full day in the city, but it has limits, and an e-bike is not always the best tool for the trip.

What 30–40 km on one charge means

The stated range of the city and compact models is 30 km, and the low-frame Galvani and the e-MTBs reach 40 km. These figures assume moderate assist; climbing in the highest mode with a heavy rider drains the battery faster. For sightseeing, 30 km is more than enough: most rides inside the city are a few kilometres at a time. Range starts to matter on a long out-and-back ride, so plan the return leg with a margin, and switch to a lower assist level on flat stretches to save the battery for the climb back to the centre.

Hills and the river

The steepest part of a typical ride is the climb from the Manzanares valley back up to the centre. It is exactly where an e-bike pays for itself. A common pattern is to ride down to the river, follow the paths along the water, and use the motor for the way back. If your route stays on the flat — inside Retiro Park, for example — the assist matters much less.

E-bike, ordinary bicycle or bike-share

OptionMarket priceBest for
Electric bicycle€18–25 for 2 hours; €20–53 a day; €110 a weekHills, longer rides, mixed-fitness groups
Ordinary bicycle€6 an hour; €15–25 a day; €55 a weekFlat park loops, short rides
BiciMAD bike-share€0.50 for each of the first two 30-minute periods, then €3 per 30 minutesOne-way trips of up to an hour

An ordinary bicycle costs less in every unit: €6 an hour, €15–25 a day and €55 a week — half the weekly price of an e-bike. On a flat park loop it is the sensible choice. The bike-share wins on one-way trips under an hour, because you leave the bike at the nearest station instead of returning it. The rented e-bike wins on everything long or uphill, and on days when you want the same bike from morning to evening without hunting for a free station.

Key points before you book

Five figures to keep in mind

  • Two hours: €18–25 in the centre; five hours cost €39, almost 40% less per hour than the €25 block.
  • Day: €20 at the park rental point, €31–35 for an NMC Milano, €50–53 for a Freeel Urban, €50 for an e-MTB.
  • Week: €110, about €15.70 a day — cheaper than any daily price from the sixth day.
  • Deposit: €200 and an ID document at a counter in the centre; helmet and vest included.
  • Range: 30 km on compact and folding models, 40 km on the low-frame city model and the e-MTBs.

What to put in a rental request

When you contact a rental, give the date and the number of hours or days, the number of riders and their heights, and the type of bike you want — city, folding or mountain. Ask whether the price includes the helmet and lock, what the deposit is and how it is taken, and what time the bike must be back. The Rent-Trip price table on this page sums up the rates the market asks for e-bikes in Madrid, so you can see the going price before you contact anyone and recognise a quote that is out of line.

FAQ

How much does e-bike rental in Madrid cost?

Two hours in the centre cost €18–25, five hours €39, a day €20–53 depending on the model, and a week €110. An electric mountain bike costs a flat €50 a day.

Is it cheaper to rent an e-bike by the week?

Yes, if you ride on most days. €110 for seven days works out to about €15.70 per day, which beats a €20 daily rate from the sixth day and a €31 city model from the fourth.

Why do daily prices range from €20 to €53?

The difference is the bike. €20 is the starting price at a park rental point, an NMC Milano city e-bike costs €31–35, and a Freeel Urban costs €50–53. Compare quotes for the same type of bike.

What deposit and documents do I need?

A counter in the centre asks for a €200 deposit and an identity document. No driving licence is mentioned for e-bike rental in Madrid.

Can children and teenagers rent an e-bike?

Under-18s ride only together with an adult. Folding models such as the A2B Kuo are sized for teenagers.

Is a helmet included?

At a counter in the centre a helmet and a reflective vest are included in the rental. Ask the same question wherever you book.

How far can I ride on one charge?

Compact and folding models state 30 km, the low-frame Galvani Adult E-Bike L-XL and the electric mountain bikes up to 40 km. Riding uphill in the highest assist mode shortens the range.

Can I ride an e-bike on the pavement in Madrid?

No. The city's mobility ordinance forbids cycling on pavements and in pedestrian streets and zones, except on marked aceras-bici and for children under 12 riding with an adult at walking pace.

Is BiciMAD a cheaper alternative?

For short one-way trips, yes. The public bike-share has 8,385 electric bikes at 683 stations in 21 districts; the first two 30-minute periods cost €0.50 each, then every 30 minutes costs €3.

For a long outing it gets expensive: three hours come to €13 and eight hours to €43, more than most daily rentals.
