Speed limits and the roads you will actually use

Motorway driving on the AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33 is capped at 120 km/h, while ordinary carretera convencional roads — the GI-614, GI-682 and C-260 among them — run at 90 km/h. The AP-7 corridor from La Jonquera down through Girona to Vila-seca has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme between Montgat and Palafolls lost its barriers on the same date, so the run up from Barcelona costs nothing in tolls. What remains tolled in Catalonia is a short list: C-16 towards the Cadí tunnel and the southern C-32 stretch past Castelldefels, Sitges and El Vendrell, where the Vallcarca barrier charges 8.42 € and Cubelles 5.03 € for category 2. None of those sit on a Costa Brava route. The practical consequence is that you can plan a day of coastal driving without budgeting for peajes at all — the money goes on fuel instead.

Fuel, and what a litre costs this season

• Petrol 95 E5: averaging 1.94 €/l across the province of Girona, with 250 filling stations to choose from.
• Diesel (Gasóleo A): averaging 1.922 €/l, the cheapest of the three grades and available at 266 stations.
• Petrol 98 E5: averaging 2.106 €/l, worth it only if the model you booked asks for it.
• Coastal prices: stations along the shore average slightly higher — 1.956 €/l for 95 and 1.932 €/l for diesel.
• Full-to-full: we supply the car with a full tank and you return it full (lleno-lleno); anything missing plus the refuelling service fee is set out in the rental agreement.

Fill up inland rather than at the first station you see on the coast road — the provincial average is a couple of cents below the seaside figure, and on a long touring week that difference covers a coffee stop.

Parking in Girona and along the coast

Girona runs a zona blava at 1.20 €/h with a two-hour maximum (2.40 €), enforced Monday to Saturday during working hours, 9:30–13 and 16–20, though the Sant Narcís area keeps different times. The zona verda charges the same 1.20 €/h for non-residents, with Pedreres–Vista Alegre restricted 9:30–13 and 17–20 on weekdays and 9:30–13 on Saturdays, and Güell–Devesa from 8 to 20. It is worth knowing that the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has applied since 15.09.2025, restricting cars without a DGT environmental badge between 7 and 20, Monday to Friday on working days, across the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell — Spanish rental fleets carry the badge, so a rental car is not affected. Away from the city, Lloret de Mar offers 160 spaces at Can Lloranes for roughly 15 €/day between 23 June and 11 September and free outside that window, plus a 200-space park-and-ride on Avinguda Alegries that is free for stays over 12 hours and throws in a bus ticket to the centre.

Speeds are the Spanish standard: 120 km/h on autopista and autovía such as the AP-7, A-2, C-32 and C-33, and 90 km/h on carretera convencional like the GI-614, GI-682 and C-260.

Cap de Creus access, and why timing matters

The road from Cadaqués to the Far de Cap de Creus is restricted at set times rather than closed outright, and the calendar is published for the season ahead — late March ran 9:30–19:00, April and May were limited to individual days at the same hours, June has more closure days, and from July to 13 September the road is closed to cars daily 9:30–21:30.

It pays for harm to other people up to 70,000,000 EUR per incident and for damage to property up to 15,000,000 EUR, and it stays in force even if the driver at the wheel was not named in the agreement — but it never covers the driver himself or the car. The excess itself is printed in the agreement whatever you buy, and its amount depends on the provider and the car class.

If a violation is not handed over at the roadside, liability falls on the owner or renter until it is proven who was driving.
