City Scooters, 125s and Maxi-Scooters: Day Rates, Licences and Deposits
Scooter rental in Barcelona starts from €15 a day for a Piaggio Liberty 125, and the middle of the 40 models on this page sits at €25. Below: how two-hour, daily and monthly prices compare, which licence covers which engine size, what the deposit and helmet rules look like, and how a scooter stacks up against a motorbike or a bike.
How hire is priced: two hours, a day or a month
Scooters in the city are rented in four working modes — you ride yourself, and you pay by the hour, by the day or by the week and month. Each mode has its own logic, and the cheapest figure in one mode is not always the cheapest total.
What a day rate usually covers
A day rate is the price of one scooter for one rider for a calendar day. The Rent-Trip section on this page brings together 40 scooter models, and every price shown on the cards is a starting figure per day, without dates. Across the market, day rates at local rental shops run from €28 to €40, and some shops quote from €35 a day with helmets and third-party insurance already included. That spread matters: two scooters at €20 and €35 can cost the same once a helmet and basic cover are added to the cheaper one. Before comparing two quotes, ask three things — is a helmet included, what insurance sits inside the rate, and is there a kilometre limit.
Short hires by the hour
Hourly hire suits a ride along the seafront or a quick hop between two neighbourhoods. One local shop prices two hours at €20 and a full day at €28, so two hours already cost about 71% of the day. The practical rule follows from that: if you plan more than two hours in the saddle, the full day costs only €8 more and removes the clock. In my view, the hourly option is worth it only when you know the ride will end before lunch.
Weekly and monthly hire
Monthly scooter rental is a separate market aimed at people who live in the city rather than visitors. Basic monthly plans start at €121 a month with 1,000 km included and reach €250 a month with 2,000 km, against a deposit of €450. Spread over 30 days, €121 comes to about €4 a day — less than a third of the cheapest daily rate. A week at the lowest day price, €15, adds up to €105, which is close to a whole month on a basic plan. If your stay runs past three weeks, a monthly plan is the first thing to price.
| How you rent | Starting price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Two hours | €20 at one local shop | A seafront ride or a single errand |
| One day | €15–€100 across 40 models; €28–€40 at local shops | Sightseeing, a day out of the centre |
| One month | €121–€250 with 1,000–2,000 km | Residents and long stays |
Why a “from” price needs a date
A starting price shows the floor, not the quote you will get. Two offers for the same SYM Symphony SR 125 started at €17.39 and €150 a day — the same model, nearly nine times apart. Behind a gap like that there can be a different pick-up point, a different insurance package or simply a different date. Ask for a price with your exact days, and compare totals rather than headline rates.
40 models from €15 to €100 a day
The 40 models range from €15 to €100 a day, and the bulk of them sit in a narrow band: 16 start at €20 or less, 24 at €25 or less, and only 10 go above €30. The middle of the range is €25.
Seven classes at a glance
| Class | Models | Day rate from | Middle of the class |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 cc mopeds | 5 | €17.39–€34 | €20 |
| Electric scooters | 3 | €17.39–€40 | €20 |
| City scooters, 110–125 cc | 11 | €15–€30 | €21 |
| Retro scooters, 125 cc | 4 | €20–€50 | €25 |
| Maxi-scooters, 125 cc | 4 | €23–€38 | €29 |
| Three-wheelers | 3 | €20–€50 | €20 |
| 200–530 cc scooters | 9 | €17–€100 | €26 |
One model sits outside the table: the Vespa Primavera 75, from €60 a day, whose engine size is not stated. Treat it as a style choice rather than a class.
The cheapest end
Seven models start below €18 a day. The Piaggio Liberty 125 is the floor at €15. Behind it come the Honda Vision 110, the Aprilia Compay 125 Custom and the Aprilia SportCity 200 at €17 each, then the Piaggio Liberty 50, the electric Askoll NGS 3 and the SYM Symphony SR 125 at €17.39. Note the mix: a 50 cc moped, a 125, a 200 cc scooter and an electric model all start within 39 cents of each other.
Engine size does not set the price
The card prices show that a bigger engine is not automatically dearer. The three-wheeled Peugeot Metropolis 400 starts at €20, while the Yamaha NMAX 125 starts at €30. The Vespa Primavera 50 starts at €34, above the Vespa Primavera 125 at €30. The Suzuki Burgman 200 starts at €20, below the Burgman 125 at €26. Brand and styling move the rate more than cubic centimetres do. So pick the scooter by the licence you hold and the ride you plan, and only then look for the cheapest model inside that class.
The top end
Above €40 a day the list thins out to four models: the Yamaha TMAX DX 530 at €100, the Vespa Primavera 75 at €60, and the Vespa GTS Super 125 and Quadro QV3 350 at €50 each. The TMAX is the only model in the city that starts at three figures, and it costs four times the middle of the range.
The 125 cc class and the car-licence rule
The 125 cc class is the busiest part of the market for one reason: a car licence can cover it.
Who can ride a 125 on a car licence
Under Spanish rules, drivers who hold a valid category B car licence and have at least three years of driving experience may ride motorcycles up to 125 cc — the A1 limit of 125 cc and 11 kW. Rental shops apply the same rule word for word: for 125 cc scooters, a category B licence held for at least three years. That is why 125cc scooter rental is what most visitors end up booking. If your licence is younger than three years, the 125s are off the table, whatever the price.
20 models in the 125 class
Counting the two 110 cc Hondas, 20 models fall within the 125 limit. They start between €15 and €50 a day, and the middle of the class sits between €22.39 and €23.
| Model | Type | From per day |
|---|---|---|
| Piaggio Liberty 125 | City scooter | €15 |
| Honda Vision 110 | City scooter | €17 |
| Aprilia Compay 125 Custom | City scooter | €17 |
| Peugeot Django 125 | Retro scooter | €20 |
| Yamaha Tricity 125 | Three-wheeler | €20 |
| Kymco People 125 | City scooter | €21 |
| Honda SH125i ABS | City scooter | €22.39 |
| Yamaha XMAX 125 | Maxi-scooter | €23 |
| Kymco Agility City II 125 | City scooter | €25 |
| Vespa Primavera 125 | Retro scooter | €30 |
| Kymco Grand Dink 125 | Maxi-scooter | €38 |
| Vespa GTS Super 125 | Retro scooter | €50 |
City, retro or maxi
Inside the class there are three distinct shapes. The 11 city scooters start between €15 and €30 and are the plain, light option for getting around. The four retro models — the Peugeot Django 125 and SYM Fiddle III 125 at €20, the Vespa Primavera 125 at €30 and the Vespa GTS Super 125 at €50 — cost more for the look than for the ride; an earlier generation of the Fiddle 125 starts at €23. The four 125 cc maxi-scooters — the Yamaha XMAX 125 at €23, the Suzuki Burgman 125 at €26, the SYM Joymax 125 at €32 and the Kymco Grand Dink 125 at €38 — offer a bigger body and a more relaxed riding position within the same licence. A Vespa costs up to €35 a day more than the cheapest 125, so it is worth booking only if the style is part of the trip.
Above 125 cc
The car-licence route stops at 125 cc. Nine models in the city go beyond it, from the Aprilia SportCity 200 to the Yamaha TMAX DX 530, along with the three-wheeled Metropolis 400 and QV3 350. For these, a category B licence with three years of experience is not enough; bring a licence that covers larger motorcycles and confirm the category with the rental before you pay.
Mopeds, electric models, maxi-scooters and three-wheelers
Outside the 125 cc mainstream sit four smaller groups, each with a reason to exist.
50 cc mopeds
Five 50 cc mopeds start between €17.39 and €34 a day: the Piaggio Liberty 50 at €17.39, the Honda Vision 50 and Peugeot Tweet 50 at €20, the SYM Symphony 50 at €26 and the Vespa Primavera 50 at €34. A moped is the lighter, slower choice, but here it is not the cheaper one — the least expensive 125 starts at €15, below every 50 cc model. For moped rental in Barcelona, the honest reason to choose a 50 is a licence that does not yet cover a 125, not the price.
Electric scooters
Three electric models start between €17.39 and €40 a day: the Askoll NGS 3, which sits in the 50 cc class, at €17.39, the SEAT MÓ at €20 and the Govecs GO! S3.4 at €40. Electric scooters are quiet and simple to ride, but range and charging decide how useful they are for a full day. Ask how far the battery goes on a charge, whether a charger comes with the scooter and where it can be plugged in before you plan a ride up a hill or out of the centre.
Maxi-scooters for two
Above 125 cc, the maxi-scooters are the choice for two people or for longer distances. The Suzuki Burgman 200 starts at €20, the Yamaha XMAX 300 at €25, the XMAX 400 at €26, the Piaggio Beverly 300 at €25, the Kymco Xciting 250 at €30 and the Kymco Grand Dink 300 at €37. The Yamaha TMAX DX 530 tops the list at €100. A 300–400 cc maxi costs only €2–€5 a day more than the middle of the 125 class, so for a couple planning a day along the coast, the step up is cheap — provided the licence allows it.
Three-wheelers
Three models ride on two front wheels and one rear: the Yamaha Tricity 125 and Peugeot Metropolis 400 at €20 a day, and the Quadro QV3 350 at €50. The Tricity falls within the 125 cc limit, so it can work for riders with a car licence held for three years who want the extra front wheel. The two larger three-wheelers fall under the same rule as any scooter above 125 cc.
Licence, helmet and deposit at pick-up
Most of what happens at the counter comes down to three items: a licence, a helmet and a deposit.
Documents to bring
To rent a scooter in Barcelona you need a valid driving licence — either a European one or an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence. For any 125, the category B licence must have been held for at least three years. Bring the physical licence, not a photo of it, and check the issue date before you book a 125: it is the one detail that can end the booking at the counter.
Helmets
Helmets are mandatory. Some local shops include helmets in the day rate; others may charge for them separately, so ask how many helmets come with the scooter. If you ride with a passenger, you need a second helmet, and it is worth checking that it fits before you leave the shop rather than halfway across town.
The deposit
A deposit of €150 to €300 is the usual range for a day hire, and monthly plans ask for €450. The deposit is held against damage and fines and is returned after the scooter comes back. Ask in advance whether it is taken on a card or in cash, what can be deducted from it and how it is returned. A larger deposit is not a sign of a worse deal; it often comes with a bigger or more expensive scooter.
Checking the scooter before you ride
Before riding off, walk around the scooter and photograph every scratch and scuff, the fuel gauge or battery level and the odometer. Check the lights, the brakes and the mirrors. These few minutes protect the deposit better than any argument at the return desk.
Scooter, motorbike or bike: matching the vehicle to the trip
A scooter is the cheapest motorised way to cover the city, but it is not the only option on two wheels.
Starting prices side by side
| Vehicle | Starting price | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| Bicycle | €5 a day, or €4 an hour | Not needed |
| Scooter | €15 a day, 40 models | Category B for 3 years covers up to 125 cc |
| E-bike | €25 a day | Not needed |
| Motorbike | €31 a day, 53 models | Category that covers the engine size |
What the numbers say
The cheapest scooter costs less than the cheapest e-bike — €15 against €25 a day — and about half the cheapest motorbike at €31. A regular bicycle is cheaper still from €5 a day, and regular bikes travel free on the metro outside rush hours, which makes a bike plus metro a real alternative for short city days. A scooter wins when the day includes hills, distance or two people: the climbs to Montjuïc and Tibidabo are a different matter on an engine than on pedals.
Choosing by route
For a day in the centre with short hops between neighbourhoods, a city 125 at €15–€30 is enough. For the hills and a wider loop, the same 125 works, or an electric model if the battery range is confirmed. For a day along the coast with a passenger, a 300–400 cc maxi-scooter from €25 is the comfortable option for licence holders who qualify. For anything that needs a larger motorbike, the motorcycle section starts at €31 a day.
Key points before you book
