Which driving licence works in Spain

We accept EU/EEA licences in Spain because they stay fully valid while they have not expired, and an International Driving Permit is not needed for them. Drivers holding a licence from outside the EU/EEA can use it in Spain if it is still in force, if the holder is old enough for the equivalent category, and if no more than six months have passed since they took up ordinary residence in the country. The DGT recommends getting an International Driving Permit before the trip and carrying it together with your passport and your national licence — the permit is a supplement, never a document on its own. If your licence is not written in Spanish, it is valid either with an official certified translation or if it was issued in the format of Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention. Speed limits you will actually meet

• Autopista and autovía (AP-7, A-2, C-32, C-33): 120 km/h for passenger cars — the AP-7 corridor from the French border down past Girona is free of tolls.
• Carretera convencional (GI-614, GI-682, C-260): 90 km/h, and the owner of the road may raise it to 100 km/h.
• Town streets with a single platform for carriageway and pavement: 20 km/h; one lane each way, 30 km/h, which a municipality can raise to 50 km/h by sign.
• Two or more lanes in one direction in town: 50 km/h, not counting bus and reserved lanes.
• Speeding fines: 100 EUR with no points, then 300 EUR and 2 points, 400 EUR and 4, 500 EUR and 6, up to 600 EUR and 6 points for the worst band.
• Alcohol: the general limit is 0.25 mg/l of breath, 0.15 mg/l for drivers in their first two years and for professionals; above 0.60 mg/l it stops being an administrative matter.
• Phone in hand: 200 EUR and 6 points; a seatbelt or child-seat offence is 200 EUR and 4 points.

The Girona low-emission zone and what it means for the Urus

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025. It covers the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell, and it runs 7–20, Monday to Friday, on working days. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are the ones restricted, with an allowance of 24 days a year inside the restricted hours without a permit. Cameras read number plates, and you do not display the sticker. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, so a car with the sticker has no restriction at all. If you plan a morning in the old town, leave the car at a zona blava or zona verda space instead of driving into the ZBE: Girona charges 1.20 EUR per hour with a two-hour maximum, 2.40 EUR in total, Monday to Saturday on working hours of 9:30–13 and 16–20.

Parking and fuel on the coast

Lloret de Mar has 160 spaces at Can Lloranes at roughly 15 EUR per day from 23 June to 11 September, free outside that window, and a 200-space park-and-ride on Avinguda Alegries that is free for stays over 12 hours and throws in a bus ticket to the centre between 15 June and 15 September. • Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil: the compulsory third-party cover, in place on every car legally driven in Spain; it pays for damage to other people, not for the Urus itself or for the driver.
• Legal limits: €70,000,000 per incident for personal injury and €15,000,000 per incident for property damage, the figures set by Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2 as amended by Ley 5/2025, in force since 26.07.2025.

The excess figure is printed in the rental agreement whatever level of protection you choose, and the deposit is agreed when booking. Neither is a fixed number on this page. One thing worth doing at collection: walk round the Urus with the person handing it over and get every scratch and dent written into the contract or the inspection sheet before you drive off.
