Aeroport de Girona-Costa Brava (GRO) sits at Vilobí d'Onyar, 12.5 km south-west of Girona. Grow the trip north and the numbers stay manageable: Roses is 75.2 km from the airport, Cadaqués 89.4 km, with 41.8 km of that on the AP-7. If you land at Barcelona-El Prat instead, the drive to Lloret de Mar is 89.6 km and about 75 minutes without traffic.

Fuel and drivetrain: what to check before you book

Two of the four run on petrol and two on diesel, and that choice follows your mileage more than your preference. Petrol 95 E5 averages 1.94 EUR per litre across the province of Girona and 1.956 along the coast, while diesel averages 1.922 in the province and 1.932 on the coast — close enough that a short break will not notice the gap, but a month of daily driving will. Automatic transmission is standard across all four models, so nobody has to compromise on the gearbox to get the body they want. On drivetrain, front-wheel drive covers every surfaced road you will use between the resorts and the airports, and all-wheel drive is worth paying for only if you actually intend to leave the tarmac.

Diesel (Gasóleo A) averages 1.922 province-wide, median 1.959, range 1.718–2.089, and 1.932 on the coast across 59 stations. Petrol 98 E5 sits higher at 2.106 province-wide and 2.131 on the coast. The A1 Sportback and A3 Sportback run on petrol, the A4 and Q5 on diesel, so the fuel bill follows the model you pick. Every car leaves us with a full tank and comes back full — full-to-full, or lleno-lleno in Spain. Anything missing at return, plus a refuelling service fee, is charged as set out in the rental agreement.

Tolls on the roads you will actually use

The AP-7 corridor from Vila-seca to La Jonquera — the whole run from the Catalan capital to the border — has been toll-free since 01.09.2021. The C-32 Maresme between Montgat and Palafolls, the route from El Prat toward Blanes and Lloret de Mar, went free the same night, and the C-33 toward Montmeló followed on 01.09.2021. What remains tolled under the Generalitat's current price list is C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern stretch of C-32 toward Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell, where the Vallcarca barrier charges 8.42 € and Cubelles 5.03 € for category 2. None of those sit on a Costa Brava route. Catalonia keeps discussing a return to charging for expressways — a vignette or a pay-per-use scheme — but no decision has been taken.

The Girona low-emission zone and what it means for a rental

• Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona: in force since 15.09.2025, covering the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell.
• Hours: 7–20, Monday to Friday, on working days only.
• Who is restricted: cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona.
• Relief: 24 days a year inside the restricted hours without a permit.
• Enforcement: cameras read number plates, so there is no sticker to display.
• Foreign plates: a temporary permit is available if the car meets the technical and environmental requirements.
• Rental cars: the Spanish rental fleet carries the DGT badge, so a car with the sticker faces no restriction.

The Q5 is the only all-wheel-drive model on this page. Note that the Cadaqués–Far de Cap de Creus road is closed to cars at set hours through the season — 9:30–19:00 on 28–31 March and selected days in April and May, and daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September — so check the calendar before you plan that drive.

Driving licence and ID requirements

• EU/EEA licence: valid in Spain until its expiry date, with no international permit needed alongside it.
• Non-EU licence: the DGT recommends an International Driving Permit before you travel, carried together with your passport and your national licence.
• Non-Latin script licence: either an official Spanish translation or an IDP is required in practice — Cyrillic, Arabic and character-based licences are not read as they stand.
• ID document: an original identity document in the main driver's name is what rental companies ask for; there is no single DGT rule on it.
• Residency change: six months after you take up ordinary residence in Spain, a third-country licence stops being valid and has to be exchanged.

Minimum rental age, the young-driver surcharge, accepted cards and the territory you may drive in are agreed when booking — the DGT sets none of them.

Insurance: what is mandatory and what is optional

• Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil: mandatory third-party cover, included in any rental in Spain by law, with limits of 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR for property damage under Real Decreto Legislativo 8/2004, article 4.2 as amended by Ley 5/2025.
• CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): an optional layer that removes your liability for damage to the car itself in a collision with another vehicle or an object — except the excess.
• THW (Theft Protection): optional cover for full or partial theft and for vandalism damage, again except the excess.

The excess is printed in the rental agreement, and the deposit is set out in the rental agreement.

What the agreement sets out before you drive away

Spanish consumer rules require the advertised price to include every mandatory charge you cannot drive without — the compulsory third-party insurance among them. At hand-over, any scratch or dent must be written into the agreement or the inspection sheet before you leave, the document is signed by both sides, and you keep a copy; without that, damage found later is charged to you. If the model you booked is not available, you may ask for another car at no extra cost, even a class above — and if you are given a lower class, the price has to come down. Fuel runs full-to-full: we hand the Audi over with a full tank and expect it back the same way, otherwise the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as the agreement states.
