Documents and rules for Tesla car rental in Koh Samui
An electric car needs the same documents as any other, so it is worth sorting the paperwork before the car arrives. The rules below are the ones Thai law and our rental agreement apply to every driver.
What you need to bring
- Home driving licence: your national licence, valid for the whole hire.
- International Driving Permit: required for visitors from outside ASEAN, issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention.
- ASEAN licences: travellers from ASEAN member states drive on their national licence, with no permit needed.
- Bank card: a card in the main driver's name is used for the security hold; the amount is set out in the rental agreement.
- Age: the minimum driver age is 21, and conditions for drivers under 25 are set out in the rental agreement.
Driving rules and fines
Thailand keeps to the left and every car here is right-hand drive, which takes a few kilometres to get used to on the ring road. Children under 6 ride in a TISI-standard child seat, and below 135 cm a belt or special seat is required; the fine is up to ฿2,000. Every passenger, including those in the back, wears a seatbelt. Parking against a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is prohibited, and the fine is set out in the rental agreement. The alcohol limit is 50 mg% in blood, dropping to 20 mg% for drivers under 20 or on temporary licences; refusing a breath test counts as an admission, and the penalty runs to a year in prison, a fine of ฿5,000–20,000 or both, plus a licence suspension of at least six months.
Insurance and the agreement
Compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, covers injury to third parties and comes attached to every registered car. First-class cover handles damage to the vehicle itself, and its terms together with the excess are set out in the rental agreement. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, and how they are settled is set out in the rental agreement. The ring road runs 51 km around the island and links Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam, so a delivery to any of them is a straightforward run for us.

The agreement itself
Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement in Thailand is a contract controlled by the OCPB — the Office of the Consumer Protection Board. It is written in Thai, and every fee and penalty is disclosed in it. That matters for Tesla car rental in Koh Samui because the document you receive is not a generic form: the rental period, the model, the security hold and the excess all sit in one place, in a language the local authority supervises. If a clause is unclear, ask the manager — the contract is the only document that decides what you owe and what you do not.
Fines, cameras and the car owner
Traffic-camera fines in Thailand are issued to the car owner — the rental company — and then re-invoiced to the renter. The same applies to parking penalties issued against the plate. Driving without an International Driving Permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim, so keep your home licence and your permit together in the car. If you are stopped at a roadside check, the officer deals with you, not with us.
If something goes wrong
Compulsory cover handles injury to others; damage to the Tesla itself runs through Class 1, whose terms and excess are set out in the rental agreement you signed. We do not quote an excess figure here because it depends on the agreement in front of you.

Why a month is worth it on the island
Booked by the month, the car becomes a household item — a run to a beach, a supermarket trip, an evening in Fisherman's Village — and the daily cost drops accordingly. The one thing worth planning around is the weather. The driest stretch is February to April, while October to December brings the heaviest rain of the year, and the roads hold standing water in places. If your stay covers those months, a longer booking gives you the flexibility to drive on the days that suit you instead of cramming trips into a short window.
