What the driver must carry

• Licence: an EU/EEA permit is valid in Spain until it expires, with nothing added; a third-country permit is valid if it is in force and the holder meets the Spanish age rule for that category.
• International Driving Permit: the DGT recommends one before the trip for non-EU/EEA licences; it is 16 pages in a grey tri-fold cover and lasts 1 year.
• Translation: a licence not in Spanish must come with a certified Spanish translation, or be issued on the Annex 9 Geneva or Annex 6 Vienna model.
• Passport or ID: the original in the main driver's name.
• Insurance: the Seguro Obligatorio de Responsabilidad Civil is included in every hire by law, with limits of 70,000,000 EUR per incident for personal injury and 15,000,000 EUR for property.

Cover beyond the legal minimum

• CDW: waives the driver's liability for collision damage to the car, except the excess; vandalism is excluded unless it happened while the car was in use.
• THW: covers full or partial theft and vandalism damage, minus the excess.
• SCDW and SPCDW: partial and full buy-out of the excess left by CDW; neither works if CDW was not taken or an exclusion applies.
• STHW and SPTHW: the same partial and full buy-out for the theft excess.
• WWI: glass and tyres, which the base CDW normally leaves out.
• Excess: printed in the agreement whether or not a buy-out was purchased.

City rules your drivers meet

• Speed: 120 km/h on autopista and autovía, 90 km/h on a conventional road, 30 km/h on a city street with one lane each way, 20 km/h where the pavement and roadway share one platform, 50 km/h with two or more lanes each way.
• Rondes B-10 and B-20: 80 km/h as the general motorway limit inside the built-up area unless a sign says otherwise.
• Alcohol: 0.25 mg/l of breath for all drivers, 0.15 mg/l for novices in their first two years; above 0.60 mg/l it becomes a criminal offence.
• Phone: 200 EUR and 3–6 points, with 6 points if the phone was held in the hand.
• Seat belts and child seats: 200 EUR and 4 points; an SRI is required for children under 135 cm.
• Paid parking: AREA Blava A is 2.5 EUR per hour, AREA Blava B is 2.25 EUR per hour.
• Tolls: the C-16 Túnels de Vallvidrera exit towards Sant Cugat and the Vallès costs 4.7 EUR for a car.
• Foreign plates: pre-registration in the Registre metropolità de vehicles estrangers is mandatory for the ZBE.

Two notes from our own desk. In our experience here, foreign-registered cars are the ones that get caught out by the ZBE, not Spanish-plated vehicles — check the plate before the first trip.
