FAQ

I am visiting Toronto for a few weeks — which licence do I need?

Under Ontario rules, a guest visiting Ontario for less than 3 months may drive on a valid licence from their own province, state or country. The minimum driving age by law is 16.

I am staying in Toronto longer than 3 months. What do I need?

Ontario rules say a visitor from another country staying more than 3 months needs an International Driver's Permit from their own country. It cannot be obtained in Canada, so arrange it before travelling.

What are fuel prices in Toronto right now?

Regular petrol in Toronto was C$ 1.76 per litre on 21.10.2026, and diesel was C$ 2.61 per litre on 22.10.2026. Cars on this page range from C$ 38 to C$ 2599 per day.

What car rental for foreigners in Toronto requires before you drive

The paperwork for car rental for foreigners in Toronto depends on one thing: how long you are staying. A visitor from another province, state or country drives on their own licence for the first three months, and after that the rules change. Everything below is what Ontario asks of a visiting driver, not what a rental desk asks.

A visitor to Ontario for less than 3 months drives on a valid driver's licence from their own province, state or country. Ontario's own wording is «If you are visiting Ontario for less than 3 months … you can use a valid driver's licence from your own province, state or country», and that covers a licence that is current and valid.

When an International Driver's Permit is needed

A visitor from another country staying more than 3 months needs an International Driver's Permit (IDP) from their own country, and it cannot be obtained in Canada. Ontario does not issue the IDP to visitors, which means a driver who arrives without one and passes the three-month mark has no way to fix it locally. Order it before you fly: the application is processed at home, and a permit requested after landing simply does not exist. If your stay is open-ended, treat the IDP as part of the ticket price and sort it in the same week you book the flight.

Documents to carry on every trip

Passport: needed for any crossing into the United States, and worth keeping in the car rather than in a suitcase for a border day.

The minimum age to hold a licence under Ontario law is 16, while the minimum age to rent and any young-driver surcharge are agreed when booking — we do not publish either as a fixed rule. A copy of the ownership permit is legal in place of the original, so keep it in the glovebox rather than in your luggage, where it is no use to anyone who stops you.

Choosing a car for car rental for foreigners in Toronto

With 165 cars across 15 classes, the choice comes down to three numbers: how many people travel, how much luggage goes with them, and how far the car will be driven. Everything else — badge, engine, colour — is a preference, not a requirement.

Classes and what each one suits

The cheapest car on the page is the Mitsubishi Mirage at C$ 38 a day, and the most expensive is the Ferrari F8 Tributo at C$ 2,599.

Seats, transmission and fuel across the fleet

  • Automatic by default: 164 of the 165 cars are automatic, and the single manual is an exception rather than an option to plan around.
  • Seats from 2 to 12: 23 cars have 2 seats, 17 have 4, 100 have 5, 14 have 7, 10 have 8, and one Ford Transit Passenger Van carries 12.
  • Petrol dominates: 153 cars run on petrol, 7 are hybrids and 5 are fully electric, including the Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, Polestar 2, Porsche Taycan and Ford Mustang Mach-E.
  • Body shapes: 53 SUVs, 34 sedans, 21 crossovers, 20 coupes, 13 convertibles, 6 hatchbacks and 6 MPVs cover almost every trip.
  • Brands: 39 manufacturers appear on the page, from Mitsubishi and Kia to Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Ferrari.

Seven-seat cars — the Kia Sorento, Toyota Highlander, Chrysler Pacifica, Hyundai Santa Fe and Mitsubishi Outlander among them — are the practical ceiling for a family with luggage, because the third row eats the boot. If you need both eight seats and bags, look at the Honda Odyssey or Kia Carnival rather than an eight-seat SUV.

Long trips and out-of-town routes

One road rule matters on those routes. Winter tyres are not mandatory in Ontario, but Quebec requires them from 1 December to 15 March for vehicles registered in Quebec, with a fine of C$ 200–300; a car on Ontario plates is outside that rule. Highway 407 ETR is the toll road to know — it has no booths, charges passenger cars from 49.93¢ to 119.21¢ per kilometre by zone and time of entry, plus a C$ 1 trip toll, and without a transponder a camera charge of C$ 5.30 per trip and a C$ 5 monthly account fee apply. Who covers tolls and charges on a rental is agreed when booking, so raise it before the car is delivered rather than after the invoice arrives.

Crossing into the United States is possible with most cars picked up in Canada, but only with permission from the rental point, and some classes — exotic cars and large vans — are restricted; without written permission the trip breaks the agreement and the insurance, and a passport is needed at the border. Ask the manager at booking, not at the crossing.

Delivery and hand-over for car rental for foreigners in Toronto

The delivery address, the date and the time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed, so nothing about the hand-over depends on you guessing where to go on arrival.

Where we deliver the car

  • Any address in Toronto: a hotel, an apartment, a friend's house or an office — we bring the car to the door.
  • Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ): the main international gateway, 36 km by road from the centre and 38 minutes without traffic.
  • Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ): the downtown airport, 6 km by road and about 12 minutes from the core.
  • John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM): the third arrival point we cover, 86.7 km out and roughly 73 minutes in clear conditions.
  • Union Station and Downtown Toronto: both sit inside the delivery area, as do Mississauga, North York, Scarborough and Vaughan.
  • Outside these places: delivery is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site.

Build the airport exit into your timing, not just the flight — the 38 minutes from Pearson to the centre is a no-traffic figure.

How the booking is agreed

Everything that shapes the hand-over is settled with a manager before the reservation is fixed, and the rental agreement carries the rest. The delivery address, the date and the time are the three things we confirm first; if your flight lands late, that is a conversation to have before the car is on its way, not after.

Terms that sit in the agreement rather than on this page:

Fuel and condition at hand-over

The car comes clean with a full tank, and it goes back the same way — full-to-full. If the tank is short on return, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement. No other fuel option is offered: there is no pre-paid tank and no full-to-empty arrangement to choose between.

If your stay runs past three months, sort an International Driver's Permit before you fly — it cannot be obtained in Canada, and no amount of paperwork at hand-over replaces it.

Driving conditions that affect car rental for foreigners in Toronto

Speed limits and how they are posted

Speed limits on provincial highways are posted per section, not set once for the whole network. The pilot began on 26 September 2019 on QEW Hamilton–St. Catharines, Highway 402 and Highway 417. Everywhere else the limit is whatever the sign says, so read the signs rather than assume the number carries over from the last stretch. If a route plan depends on a fast run out of the city, build the timing from the signs, not from an average.

Alcohol limits that catch visitors out

Criminal liability starts at 0.08 (80 mg per 100 ml of blood). The range from 0.05 to 0.079 is the warn range: a first occurrence brings an immediate 7-day licence suspension, an 8-hour course and a C$ 250 fine. Drivers aged 21 and under, and holders of G1 or G2 licences, are subject to zero.

Toll roads and how charges are handled

Highway 407 ETR is Ontario's tolled express route, and it has no toll booths — charges are recorded electronically. For light vehicles the 2026 rate runs from 49.93¢ to 119.21¢ per kilometre depending on the zone and the time of entry, plus a C$ 1 trip toll charge. Without a transponder, camera charges apply at C$ 5.30 per trip and a C$ 5 monthly account fee. Who pays road charges, tolls and penalty notices on a hired car is agreed when booking — settle it before the trip rather than after a camera charge lands.

Winter tyres and cross-border rules

Winter tyres are not mandatory in Ontario. In Quebec they are compulsory from 1 December to 15 March for vehicles registered in Quebec, hired cars included, with a fine of C$ 200–300; vehicles plated in other provinces are not covered by that rule. Crossing into the United States in a hired car is possible for most vehicles taken in Canada, but only with permission from the specific hire location; restrictions apply to some classes, including exotic cars and large vans. Driving out without written permission breaches the agreement and the insurance, and a passport is required at the border.

Fuel, distance and what a day actually costs

Fuel is sold in litres and distances are in kilometres, so a visitor's mental arithmetic needs converting. Regular petrol sat at about C$ 1.75 per litre in October 2026, with diesel at C$ 2.61 — though no car on this page runs on diesel. Rent-Trip cars come with a full tank and are returned full; the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are set out in the rental agreement if the tank comes back short.

What to check before you pull away

  • Posted limits: read every sign on provincial highways — 110 km/h applies only on selected stretches, not as a default.
  • Alcohol threshold: 0.08 is criminal, 0.05–0.079 is the warn range with an immediate 7-day suspension and a C$ 250 fine.
  • Highway 407 ETR: no booths, per-kilometre rates from 49.93¢ to 119.21¢ plus a C$ 1 trip charge; camera charges apply without a transponder.
  • Quebec winter tyres: compulsory 1 December to 15 March for Quebec-registered cars only, fine C$ 200–300.
  • US border: written permission from the hire location is required; exotic cars and large vans are restricted.
  • Fuel: full-to-full, petrol about C$ 1.75 per litre, diesel C$ 2.61 in October 2026.

Long-stay and repeat car rental for foreigners in Toronto

Car rental for foreigners in Toronto works differently for a two-week visitor and a six-month resident, and the difference sits in the rental length rather than in the class of car.

How weekly and monthly bookings are priced

  • Weekly rate: a week is charged as 6 days at the daily rate, so a C$ 38 Economy car comes to C$ 228 for the week.
  • Monthly rate: a month is charged as 21 days at the daily rate, which puts the same Economy car at C$ 798 for the month.
  • No other multiplier: these two are the only longer-booking rates we quote, and anything else is agreed when booking.
  • Class matters more over a month: the step from Economy to Crossover is C$ 11 a day, which compounds across a 21-day month.

A visitor who books 30 separate days pays 30 daily rates; the same stay booked as a month is charged as 21.

Swapping the car between trips

Winter running: winter tyres are not mandatory in Ontario, so a long-stay car does not change tyres by law — but a Quebec run between 1 December and 15 March is a different question for a Quebec-registered vehicle.

Raise the second booking before the first car goes back — the delivery address, date and time are agreed with a manager, and a gap between the two is easier to plan than to fix.

Insurance excessSet out in the rental agreement
Delivery feesSet out in the rental agreement
Minimum rental ageAgreed when booking
Young-driver surchargeAgreed when booking
Payment methodsAgreed when booking
Tolls and penalty noticesAgreed when booking

None of these is a number on the site, and none should be guessed from another company's practice.

Documents the car carries and you keep

  • Ownership permit: the car comes with its registration, and Ontario accepts the original or an exact copy — keep it in the glovebox, not in a suitcase.
  • International Driver's Permit: joins the original once a visitor from another country passes 3 months, and never replaces it.

If your stay is close to the three-month line, keep the entry stamp or boarding pass with the documents — the count runs from your date of entry, not from the booking date.

What to settle before the car is delivered

The delivery address, the date and the time are the three things confirmed with a manager before the reservation is fixed, and everything else that shapes the hand-over is settled in the same conversation.

Fuel is the one term already fixed: the car arrives clean with a full tank and goes back full. There is no pre-paid tank and no full-to-empty option to weigh up, so the only fuel decision is where to fill up before return.

Trip scenarios for car rental for foreigners in Toronto

Airport arrival with luggage

  • SUV for a full boot: a Volkswagen Tiguan at C$ 58 adds all-wheel drive and a 2.0 L engine, useful on a winter arrival.
  • Exotic and large vans: restricted for a United States crossing, so a border leg rules them out before the class question even starts.

A city week with day trips

A week in the city rarely stays inside it.

Families and groups of six or more

Groups that need both eight seats and luggage are better served by a minivan — a Kia Carnival at C$ 98 or a Toyota Sienna at C$ 107 — than by an eight-seat SUV such as the Chevrolet Suburban at C$ 182.

Weekend and special-occasion drives

  • Convertibles: nine cars from C$ 169, including a Ford Mustang Convertible and an Audi A5 Cabriolet, for a Niagara-on-the-Lake run in warm weather.
  • Sports: fifteen cars from C$ 116, from a Ford Mustang up to a Porsche 911 GT3 at C$ 1,350.
  • Exotic: fourteen cars from C$ 1,499, topped by the Ferrari F8 Tributo at C$ 2,599 a day.

Comparing classes for car rental for foreigners in Toronto

The class name on the page tells you less than three numbers do: seats, boot volume and drivetrain.

Where neighbouring classes actually differ

The SUV and Premium bands start one dollar apart — a Volkswagen Tiguan at C$ 58 against an Acura RDX at C$ 59 — so the choice there is about badge and power rather than budget.

Automatic, petrol and the manual exception

Of the 165 cars on this page, 164 are automatic and one is manual. That single manual is an exception rather than an option to plan around, and a visitor who has only ever driven a manual at home should not count on finding one here. Fuel splits the same way: 153 cars run on petrol, 7 are hybrids and 5 are fully electric. The electric five need a charging plan before the trip, not during it.

All-wheel drive and when it earns the upgrade

For a January stay with trips out of the city, an all-wheel-drive SUV such as a Toyota RAV4 at C$ 71 or a Honda CR-V at C$ 74 is the sensible default.

Reading the agreement before car rental for foreigners in Toronto starts

The four figures to find first

Fuel shortfall: the missing fuel plus a refuelling service fee, charged as set out in the contract if the tank comes back short.

Read the deposit and the excess together, since both are set out in the rental agreement and neither is a figure quoted on this page.

Terms agreed when booking, not printed in the agreement

Minimum rental ageAgreed when booking
Young-driver surchargeAgreed when booking
Payment methodsAgreed when booking

Who covers Highway 407 ETR charges, camera charges and any penalty notice is settled in that same conversation rather than assumed on either side.

Common mistakes in car rental for foreigners in Toronto

Paperwork mistakes

A visitor from another country staying more than 3 months needs an International Driver's Permit from their own country, and the application is processed at home — treat it as part of the ticket price and sort it in the week you book the flight.

Class and route mistakes

  • An electric car without a charging plan: five cars are fully electric, and they need the plan before the trip rather than during it.
  • Assuming winter tyres are the law in Ontario: they are not mandatory here, though Quebec requires them from 1 December to 15 March for Quebec-registered vehicles, with a fine of C$ 200–300 — a car on Ontario plates sits outside that rule.
