Tolls on the routes you will actually drive

The AP-7 between Vila-seca and La Jonquera — the whole Barcelona–Girona–French border corridor — has been toll-free since 01.09.2021, and the C-32 Maresme barriers between Montgat and Palafolls came down the same night. The only remaining Generalitat tolls are the C-16 (Cadí, Vallvidrera, Sant Cugat–Terrassa–Manresa) and the southern C-32 towards Castelldefels–Sitges–El Vendrell. Neither sits on a route you would take here, so the coastal run stays clear of them.

The Girona ZBE and what it means for a rental car

The Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona has been in force since 15.09.2025, covering the area from la Devesa park to c. d'Emili Grahit and from c. del Riu Güell to c. del Carme and Barri Vell, between 7:00 and 20:00 Monday to Friday on working days. Cars without a DGT environmental badge that are not registered in Girona are the ones restricted; cameras read plates, so there is no sticker to display. Spanish rental fleets carry the DGT badge, which means no restriction applies to the car we hand you. Cars without a badge get 24 days a year inside the restricted hours without a permit.

From Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) the coast resorts sit within a short drive: Lloret de Mar is 34.6 km (37 minutes), Palafrugell 54.4 km (52 minutes) and Roses 75.2 km (63 minutes) without traffic.

Routes worth planning around the car

• Cap de Creus loop: the road from Cadaqués to the lighthouse is closed to cars at set hours from late March to 1 November — daily 9:30–21:30 from July to 13 September — so check the calendar before you commit.
• Besalú and the Garrotxa volcanic zone: a full-day run into the hills, 50.9 km by road from Girona-Costa Brava Airport to Besalú.
• Collioure: across the border, a 114.9 km route from GRO that takes around 89 minutes, with 71.4 km of it on the AP-7.

The toll barriers that remain in Catalonia sit on the C-16 toward the Pyrenees and on the C-32 south of Barcelona, not on the coastal routes you would use here.

The Jogger earns its place on a different kind of day — seven seats mean one vehicle carries the whole group to Besalú without a second hire.

If you plan to drive into Girona itself, note the Zona de baixes emissions (ZBE) de Girona, in force since 15.09.2025 and active 7–20 on weekdays. Licence rules for driving in Spain
