How to drive a Mazda car rental in Koh Samui safely
Samui's roads reward a calm driver. The island is 228.7 km², and the 51 km ring road connects the lowlands and the coast — Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam all sit on it. Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive, so the steering wheel is on the side you may not expect.

Fuel, fines and the paperwork behind the wheel
Petrol stations on the island sell E20, 91 and 95; most are paid in cash, and few accept cards. The BT-50 takes diesel, the other two petrol. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, which is worth remembering. A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention; section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act); driving without one carries a ฿500–1,000 police fine and an insurer may refuse a claim. Children under six ride in a TISI-standard child seat by law.

A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention; section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act governs this, and citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence instead. Driving without the permit carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim, so the paperwork matters more than the check itself. Bring your passport, your home licence, the permit and a bank card in the main driver's name — that card is used for the security hold, and the amount is set out in the rental agreement. The minimum driver age is 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement.
Insurance, tax sticker and what the agreement covers
Compulsory cover (Por Ror Bor) pays for injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car, while first-class (Class 1) cover pays for damage to the vehicle itself — its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. Check the square blue tax sticker with a hologram on the windscreen: the year on it follows the Buddhist calendar (Gregorian plus 543), and a rental car must carry a current one. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and all fees and penalties are disclosed in it.
Rules on the road worth knowing before you set off
- Child seats: children under six ride in a TISI-standard child seat; the fine is up to ฿2,000.
- Seat belts: every passenger buckles up, including the rear row.
- Alcohol: the limit is 50 mg% in the blood, and 20 mg% for drivers under 20 or on temporary licences; refusing a test counts as an admission.
- Kerbside parking: no stopping at red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerbs.
- Off-road: driving onto beaches or jungle tracks is prohibited by the rental agreement.
