Insurance is already in place: compulsory Por Ror Bor covers injury to third parties and is attached to every registered car, while first-class cover for damage to the car, its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. VAT 7% is included in the prices shown. Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB, written in Thai, with all fees and penalties disclosed in it.
Before you drive away
- Traffic side: traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive; our whole diesel fleet is automatic, so no manual-gearbox habit is needed.
- Age: the minimum driver age is 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement.

Documents and driving rules for diesel car rental in Koh Samui
A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act. Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence instead. Traffic keeps to the left and every car in our fleet is right-hand drive, so the first kilometres on the ring road take some getting used to.

- International Driving Permit: the 1949 Geneva Convention booklet, carried alongside the national licence, not instead of it.
- Passport: for the rental agreement itself.
- Bank card: in the main driver's name, used for the security hold.
- Fine: ฿500–1,000 for driving without a permit, and an insurer may refuse a claim.
Speed, alcohol and child seats
Speed limits that apply to a passenger car up to 2,200 kg are 80 km/h in built-up areas and 90–120 km/h outside them. The alcohol limit is 50 mg% in blood; for drivers under 20 and holders of temporary licences it is 20 mg%. Refusing a breath test counts as an admission, and the penalty reaches up to 1 year of imprisonment, a fine of ฿5,000–20,000 or both, plus a licence suspension of at least 6 months. Children under 6 must travel in a child seat to the TISI standard, and anyone below 135 cm needs a restraint or a special seat; the fine is up to ฿2,000. All passengers, including the rear row, wear seat belts.
Parking, taxis and the paperwork in the car
Parking at a red-and-white or yellow-and-white kerb is prohibited. Because no island figure has been measured, plan your fuel budget from the pump price you actually see rather than from a mainland list. Fill up before a long loop — the ring road runs 51 km around the island and passes Nathon, Lipa Noi, Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam.
