Jet Skis in Dubai: Prices, Riding Zones and Age Rules
Jet ski rental in Dubai starts from AED 209 for 30 minutes on an early-morning slot, and a full hour on the water costs AED 480–500 for one machine that carries up to two riders. Below: how the ride is organised, what each duration costs per minute and per person, why the clock changes the price, who may drive, where riding is allowed and what the fines are.
How a jet ski ride is organised in Dubai
A jet ski is a personal watercraft that you sit astride and steer with handlebars. Of everything you can rent on the water in the city, it is the shortest and most direct way to get out to sea: no deck, no cabin, just the machine, the throttle and the coastline.
One machine, up to two riders
The market prices the machine, not the seat. Each jet ski takes up to two riders, subject to a combined weight limit, so a couple or two friends share one figure. The machines most often quoted for rent are 1500cc models from Yamaha and Sea-Doo — powerful enough for open water, yet built to be handled by people who have never ridden before. Because the price covers the jet ski, the cost per person halves as soon as a second rider climbs on.
The briefing comes first
No ride starts straight from the dock. Every session opens with an orientation and safety gear: you are fitted with a life jacket, shown the controls and told where you may and may not go. The briefing is also where the route is explained, because riding in Dubai is restricted to designated zones and the operator is responsible for keeping you inside them. Treat this part as a fixed cost in time: it happens before the booked minutes start, so it is sensible to arrive early rather than lose part of a 30-minute slot at the counter.
Guided or on your own
The market sells jet skis in three working modes: by the hour, as a guided ride and as a self-drive session. On a guided ride, a guide on a separate jet ski leads a small group along a set route — typically towards a landmark hotel — and you follow at a steady distance. On a self-drive session, you ride within a marked area near the base. Many short rentals combine the two: you drive yourself, but under route supervision, so somebody is always watching the group.
Do you need a licence?
No. When you rent from a licensed operator, you do not need a jet ski or boat licence of your own. That is how the operators in the city put it, and it is the reason a first-timer can book on the day. The licence is replaced by the briefing, the age rules and the zone you are allowed to ride in. If you own a jet ski or ride privately, the licensing rules are different — but for a rental, the operator covers that part.
What 30 minutes, an hour and two hours cost
The jet ski Dubai price depends first of all on duration, and the market works with three standard slots: 30 minutes, an hour and two hours. Every figure below is for one jet ski, whether one or two people ride it.
Market prices for a jet ski
| Duration | What the price covers | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 30 minutes | 1500cc jet ski; price depends on the time of day, VAT included | AED 209–259 |
| 30 minutes | Jet ski, 30 minutes | from AED 270 |
| 30 minutes | Guided ride to a landmark hotel | AED 280 |
| 1 hour | Guided ride to a landmark resort | AED 480 |
| 1 hour | Jet ski, one hour | AED 500 |
Half an hour costs between AED 209 and AED 280, depending on the time of day and on whether the ride follows a guided route. A full hour sits in a narrow band of AED 480–500. Two hours are offered too: a two-hour guided ride along the shoreline is AED 745, and a plain two-hour rental at one base is AED 935.
The price per minute and per person
| Slot | Price | Per minute | Per person, two riders |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 min, early morning | AED 209 | AED 6.97 | AED 104.50 |
| 30 min, peak hours | AED 259 | AED 8.63 | AED 129.50 |
| 30 min | AED 270 | AED 9.00 | AED 135 |
| 1 hour | AED 500 | AED 8.33 | AED 250 |
| 2 hours | AED 935 | AED 7.79 | AED 467.50 |
At the same base, every step up in duration lowers the cost of a minute: AED 9.00 on the half hour, AED 8.33 on the hour and AED 7.79 over two hours. The early-morning half hour at AED 6.97 a minute is the cheapest minute in the whole table — cheaper even than two hours at standard rates.
Two short rides or one long one
Two separate half-hour sessions at AED 270 add up to AED 540, which is AED 40 more than a single hour at the same base — and you sit through the briefing twice. Two separate hours at AED 500 come to AED 1,000, against AED 935 for a two-hour booking, a difference of AED 65. If you already know you want more than half an hour, book the longer slot from the start.
Choosing a duration
Thirty minutes is enough to get used to the machine, open the throttle a few times and see the skyline from the water. An hour is the length of the guided ride out to Atlantis The Royal on the Palm. Two hours suit riders who want a long run along the shoreline with photo stops, or two riders who plan to swap places. In my view, the hour is the balanced choice for a first ride: the half hour passes quickly once the briefing is over, and the hour already costs less per minute than the standard 30-minute slot.
Early morning, off-peak and peak-hour prices
On short rentals the clock matters almost as much as the duration. One harbour base sells the same 30-minute ride on the same 1500cc machine at three different prices, depending on when you go out.
Three windows, one machine
| Window | Time | 30 minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | 9:00–10:30 | AED 209 |
| Off-peak | 11:00–12:00 | AED 239 |
| Peak hours | 13:00–18:00 | AED 259 |
The peak-hour ride costs AED 50 more than the early-morning one, a premium of about 24% for exactly the same half hour. The off-peak slot sits in between, AED 30 above the morning price and AED 20 below the peak. All three prices include VAT, so the figure is the figure you pay.
Why the afternoon costs more
The peak window runs from one o'clock to six in the evening, which is when most visitors are free and the beaches are fullest. Demand sets the price, and the afternoon is when bases have the most people waiting for a machine. If your plans are flexible, the morning slot is the simplest saving on the whole page.
Opening hours
Bases keep daytime hours. One of the largest water sports bases on the coast works daily from 07:00 to 19:00, and the time windows above end at 18:00. Riders are required to keep to permitted riding hours, so plan the ride for daylight and check the last slot of the day with the base.
How to use the time of day
When you compare two quotes, check which window each one is for. A half hour at AED 270 is not necessarily more expensive than a half hour at AED 259 if the first is valid all day and the second only in the afternoon. A cheap headline price that turns out to be the 9 a.m. rate is common, and it is worth asking for the price at the hour you actually intend to ride.
Guided landmark rides and solo laps
A large part of the market is built around routes rather than plain minutes. The landmarks of the Dubai coast are best seen from the water, and the guided rides are priced by where they go.
To Burj Al Arab in half an hour
The shortest guided ride heads to Burj Al Arab, the sail-shaped hotel off the Jumeirah coast, and costs AED 280 per jet ski for 30 minutes. That is AED 10 more than a plain half hour at AED 270 and AED 21 more than the most expensive peak-hour slot, so the route itself costs very little extra. For a first ride with one clear goal — a photograph with the hotel behind you — this is the most direct format.
To the Palm and Atlantis The Royal in an hour
The hour-long guided ride goes further, out to Atlantis The Royal on Palm Jumeirah, for AED 480 per jet ski. That makes it AED 20 cheaper than a plain hour at AED 500, so the guided hour is the lower of the two hourly prices in the table. The route passes the Dubai Marina skyline and the Palm, and the guide sets the pace, which suits riders who want to see as much as possible without working out the navigation themselves.
Two hours along the shoreline
For a longer run, a two-hour guided tour along the shoreline costs AED 745 per jet ski — AED 190 less than a plain two-hour rental at AED 935. The longer the guided ride, the bigger the gap in its favour. Two hours on a guided route is the format for people who want to cover the whole stretch from the Marina to Burj Al Arab, with stops along the way.
Which format to choose
- Guided ride: the route, the pace and the stops are set for you, and you see the landmarks without planning. Better for first-timers and for anyone whose aim is the photographs.
- Self-drive session: you ride freely inside the marked zone near the base. Better if the point is the speed and the feel of the machine rather than the sights.
- Combination: a self-drive ride under route supervision, the format of many 30-minute rentals, gives you the controls and still keeps somebody watching.
The prices in this section are per jet ski, so a pair riding together pays the same as one person: AED 140 each for the half hour to Burj Al Arab, AED 240 each for the hour to Atlantis The Royal and AED 372.50 each for two hours along the shore.
Who can drive and who rides along
The rules on who can ride are short, but they decide who in a group can book before price or route do.
Driver age
- 16 and over: the legal minimum age for the person driving the jet ski is 16, unless a younger rider is accompanied by a custodian or qualified coach.
- 18 for riding alone: some operators let only riders aged 18 and over take a jet ski out independently, without a guide alongside.
- Passengers from 6: children aged 6 and over can ride as passengers; younger children are not allowed on the machine for safety reasons.
For a family this means a parent drives and one child over six rides behind. A 16- or 17-year-old may be refused a solo session where the 18+ rule applies, so if a teenager is driving, mention their age when you book.
Weight and number of riders
A jet ski carries up to two people. The limit that matters in practice is the combined weight: one operator sets it at 180–200 kilograms for the two riders together. Two heavier adults may therefore need two machines rather than one. It is worth stating the riders' weight in advance rather than finding out at the dock.
Documents
Bring an original passport or Emirates ID. Operators ask for the original document before handing over a machine, and a photo on a phone is not the same thing. If you are booking for a group, every driver needs their own document.
Swimming and fitness
Riders should be able to swim or at least tread water. You wear a life jacket throughout, but a fall into the water is part of riding a jet ski, especially on a choppy afternoon, and you will need to climb back on from the sea. Anyone who is uncomfortable in deep water is better off on a guided ride with a slower pace, or on a boat.
Riding zones, bases and the rules on the water
Where you may ride in Dubai is fixed by the authorities, and it is enforced. Knowing the zones and the fines explains why every rental ride is tied to a base and a briefing.
Designated riding zones
The officially designated jet ski areas are Dubai Marina, Umm Suqeim 1 and 2, and Jumeirah 2 and 3. Riding outside a designated area is fined AED 1,000. On a rental, the operator chooses the zone and the route, so the zone is effectively decided by the base you book from. A jet ski in Dubai Marina gives you the towers and the Palm close at hand; a base in Umm Suqeim puts Burj Al Arab a short ride away.
Where the rides start
- Umm Suqeim Fishing Harbour: on Jumeirah Road in Umm Suqeim 2, the base closest to Burj Al Arab.
- Dubai Harbour Yacht Club: at the northern end of the Marina, near the Palm.
- Marina Yacht Club and Dubai Marina: the departure points for rides along the skyline.
- Jumeirah 1 and Jumeirah 3: bases on the older Jumeirah coast, convenient for hotels between Downtown and Umm Suqeim.
Choose the base by where you are staying and by what you want to see: the half-hour ride leaves little time to cross between the Marina and Burj Al Arab, so the landmark should be close to the start.
Speed, life jackets and distance
In general riding zones the speed limit is 5 to 7 knots, roughly 9 to 13 km/h. That is slower than many first-timers expect, and the guide or the briefing will tell you where it applies on your route. A life jacket must be worn at all times and fastened properly, and riding without one is fined AED 1,000. Riders must keep a safe distance from other vessels, swimmers and the shoreline, and disturbing or harassing others carries a fine of AED 2,000.
The rules are enforced
This is not a formality. In July 2025 alone, Dubai Police and the Dubai Maritime Authority issued 431 fines and impounded 41 jet skis. Violations can be reported through the Sail Safely feature of the Dubai Police app or by calling 999. For a renter the practical meaning is simple: follow the guide, stay in the zone you were shown, and keep the life jacket on even when you stop for photos.
What the price usually includes
At one harbour base, the 30-minute price includes safety gear and orientation, a guided tour with route supervision, bottled water and access to lockers and a changing area. Another base adds free photos and free cancellation to its jet ski bookings. What is not always stated is whether cancellation for bad weather is refunded or rescheduled, so ask about that when you book a specific date.
Jet ski or self-drive boat, and the points to remember
For two people who want to drive themselves on the water, a jet ski is not the only option. The license-free boat is the closest alternative, and the comparison helps decide which to book.
Jet ski or self-drive boat for two
| Format | Who drives | One hour, two people | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jet ski | You, 16+ (18+ for solo rides with some operators) | AED 480–500 | Speed, spray and landmark photos |
| Self-drive boat | You, 18+ | AED 650 | A drier, seated ride for two |
An hour on a jet ski costs AED 150–170 less than an hour on a self-drive boat for two. You get more speed and more of the sea, but you also get wet and sit astride the machine rather than in a seat. The boat is the better choice for riders who want a calmer ride or are less confident in the water.
What to include in a request
- Date and time: give the exact time you want to ride, because the same half hour can cost AED 209 in the morning and AED 259 in the afternoon.
- Duration and format: say whether you want a plain rental or a guided ride to a landmark, and for how long.
- Riders: state the number of machines, the age of every driver and passenger and the combined weight per jet ski.
- Base: name the area you are coming from, so the departure point is close to the sights you want.
- Weather: ask what happens to the booking if the sea is too rough to go out.
Five figures to keep in mind
- Half hour: AED 209–280 per jet ski, depending on the window and the route.
- Hour: AED 480–500 per jet ski; two hours, AED 745–935.
- Age: drivers from 16, some solo rides from 18, passengers from 6.
- Weight: two riders together up to 180–200 kg on one machine.
- Fines: AED 1,000 for riding outside the zone or without a life jacket.
Put together, jet ski rental in Dubai is a short, well-regulated ride: pick the slot by the clock, the base by the landmark and the format by how much of the route you want to plan yourself.
