Driving rules for automatic car rental in Koh Samui

Speed limits, alcohol thresholds and child-seat rules are the three things an automatic driver is most likely to meet on the island. All of them are set nationally, and all of them apply whether you drive a Suzuki Swift or a Tesla Model Y.

Speed and alcohol limits

The alcohol limit is 50 mg% in blood, and 20 mg% for drivers under 20 or with temporary licences. Refusing a breath test counts as admitting the offence; the penalty runs to a year in prison, a ฿5,000–20,000 fine, or both, plus a licence suspension of at least six months. Speed limits for a passenger car up to 2,200 kg are 80 km/h in built-up areas, 90–120 km/h outside them, 120 km/h on motorways and 110 km/h on expressways. The island has no motorways and no four-lane divided roads, so the 80 km/h town limit and the 90 km/h rural limit are the two that matter on the 51 km ring road. One operator here states the local limit is 40–50 km/h — that is a company's own advice, not a published norm. Drive to the signed limit and to the road surface, not to the figure in a brochure.

Child seats and seat belts

Children under six must ride in a TISI-standard child seat, and anyone below 135 cm needs a belt or a special seat. The rule covers cars, pickups and minivans, with a fine up to ฿2,000; it comes from the 13th amendment to the Land Traffic Act 1979, published in the Royal Gazette in May 2022 and applied since 17 August 2023. Two exceptions are allowed: a child may ride in the back without a seat, belted at the waist and in the left lane at low speed — or in a pickup in the front passenger seat, never in the bed. All passengers, including those in the rear, must wear a belt.

• Parking at a curb: red-and-white and yellow-and-white kerbs are no-parking zones; one island operator quotes a ฿500 fine, which is the company's figure rather than the text of the law.
• Tax sticker on the windscreen: a square blue sticker with a hologram, its year written in the Buddhist calendar (Gregorian plus 543); a rental car must carry a current one.
• Camera fines: traffic-camera penalties are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter, so a ticket can reach you after you have flown home.
• Fuel grades: island stations sell Gasohol 91, Gasohol 95 and E20, and most take cash only — few accept cards.

Documents for an automatic car rental in Koh Samui

A foreign visitor needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act. Driving without one carries a police fine of ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim. Citizens of ASEAN countries may drive on their national licence. Bring the passport, the home licence, the permit unless you are an ASEAN citizen, and a bank card in the main driver's name — the card is used for the security hold, and the amount is set out in the rental agreement. The minimum driver age is 21; conditions for drivers under 25 and for premium classes are set out in the agreement.

Hand-over and the drive away

The car arrives clean with a full tank, and rental is available from one day. Every car in our fleet is automatic and right-hand drive, and traffic keeps to the left — the first few kilometres along the Chaweng strip will feel reversed, so take them slowly. VAT 7% is already included in the prices shown, and since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement is a contract controlled by the OCPB, written in Thai with all fees and penalties disclosed in it. Traffic-camera fines are issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter. Compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) is attached to every registered car; first-class insurance and its excess are set out in the rental agreement.

Longer automatic car rental in Koh Samui

Weekly and monthly rates are lower per day than the daily rate: weekly is daily × 6, monthly is daily × 21. That is the only discount structure we run — a Suzuki Swift at ฿750/day comes to ฿4,500 for a week and ฿15,750 for a month, and the same arithmetic applies up the range to the Premium and Convertible classes.

What a longer booking changes about the daily rate

• Week: seven days charged at six daily rates — ฿750/day becomes ฿4,500 for the week, not ฿5,250.
• Higher classes: the multipliers do not change with the car, so a Tesla Model Y at ฿1,700/day runs ฿10,200 weekly and ฿35,700 monthly.
• Length of stay: the minimum is one day, so a two-week holiday or a full season is booked on the same terms.

Why a month on the island suits an automatic

The car stays with you for the whole booking; there is no need to hand it back and collect another between trips.

When a month makes sense, and what to confirm first

Monthly rates work out cheaper per day than a string of separate short bookings, and they remove the hand-over routine from your holiday altogether.

Insurance and support for automatic car rental in Koh Samui

Every automatic car rental on Koh Samui from Rent-Trip comes with compulsory motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) attached to the registered car, plus first-class (Class 1) cover for damage to the vehicle itself.
