Georgia's road rules are straightforward for a visiting driver, and the paperwork for self-drive hire is settled before you collect the keys. What follows is what the law actually says, what is agreed when booking, and the handful of habits that differ from driving at home.

Documents and licence recognition

• Translation or IDP: if your licence carries neither Latin nor Cyrillic script, you need an International Driving Permit or a notarised translation; Georgia is a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention.
• The deposit is set out in the rental agreement.

Speed, seat belts and alcohol

• In built-up areas: 60 km/h, and 20 km/h in residential zones (Article 33, paragraph 6).
• Outside built-up areas, category B: 90 km/h; 110 km/h on motorways; 80 km/h with a light trailer (Article 33, paragraph 7b).
• Seat belts: required for the driver and all front passengers; rear belts are not required by law (Article 21, paragraph 9).
• Phone: hands-free or speakerphone only, both hands on the wheel (Article 21).
• Children: under 3 must travel in the rear in a child seat or restraint matched to height and weight; a passenger aged 16 or over may hold a child on the rear seat (Article 26, paragraphs 7–8). Children under 6 may not be left alone in a parked car (Article 26, paragraph 9).

Fines and winter tyres

The commonly cited penalty scale runs 50 ₾ for speeding by 15–40 km/h, 150 ₾ above 40 km/h, 30 ₾ for phone use, 40 ₾ for a seat belt, 50 ₾ for running a red light and 50 ₾ for unpaid parking, with 500 ₾ for driving without a licence, a 20 % discount if paid within 10 days, and 100 points in a year triggering disqualification. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March, and in government-designated zones under particular weather conditions, chains on at least the two front wheels.
