The arithmetic is simple and it is the only one we apply: weekly = daily x 6, monthly = daily x 21, so a longer booking always lands at a lower cost per day than the daily rate. The paperwork for a self-drive car on Koh Samui is short: your passport, your home driving licence and an International Driving Permit.
Licence, IDP and passport for the hand-over

- International Driving Permit: issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention; Thailand recognises it alongside your national licence, as section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act requires.
- ASEAN nationals: drive on a national licence, with no permit needed.

Police fine drivers without a permit ฿500–1,000, and an insurer may refuse a claim after an incident — so carry both documents in the car, not in your hotel room.
Insurance: what Por Ror Bor and Class 1 cover
Compulsory motor insurance, Por Ror Bor, is attached to every registered car and covers injury to third parties. First-class insurance covers damage to the car itself, and its terms and the excess are set out in the rental agreement. We hand the car over clean with a full tank. The security hold sits on a bank card in the main driver's name, and the amount is likewise set out in the agreement rather than quoted here.
Driving rules worth knowing before the pier run
- Left-hand traffic, right-hand drive: every car in the fleet is right-hand drive, and traffic keeps left.
- Speed: 80 km/h in built-up areas and 90–120 km/h outside them; the island has no motorway and no four-lane divided road.
- Alcohol: the limit is 50 mg% in blood, 20 mg% for drivers under 20 and for temporary licence holders; refusing a test counts as admitting the offence.
- Child seats: children under 6 need a TISI-standard seat, and passengers below 135 cm need a belt or a dedicated seat; the fine runs to ฿2,000.
- Seat belts: every passenger, including the rear row, buckles up.
- Kerbside parking: red-and-white and yellow-and-white kerbs are no-parking; any penalty is set out in the rental agreement.
- Camera fines: issued to the car owner and re-invoiced to the renter.
Since 30 December 2025 a car rental agreement in Thailand is a contract controlled by the OCPB: it is written in Thai, and every fee and penalty is disclosed inside it. If a clause is unclear, ask the manager before you drive off — that conversation is part of the booking, not an afterthought.

What the road itself is like
Traffic keeps to the left and every car is right-hand drive. Hazards are ordinary ones: potholes in the surface, sometimes deep, standing water after rain, oil patches left by refuse trucks, and animals wandering onto the asphalt. On the wettest stretches — mid-October to early December brings the heaviest rainfall of the year — flooded sections and slick asphalt raise the risk, so allow extra time rather than extra speed.
Timing your departure for the boat
- Departure time: check it on your tour booking and work the hand-over back from it.
- Fuel: the car comes with a full tank and goes back with a full tank.
- Daylight: the return drive is easier in daylight.
- Rain months: October to December is the wettest stretch — build in a buffer.
