By car to Ottawa
A week of driving from Toronto to Ottawa starts with the right car, and we have 62 of them on this page, from C$ 49 a day. Car rental in Toronto for a trip to Ottawa and how the booking works
Rent-Trip hands over a self-drive car at the address you give us, and the delivery address, date and time are agreed with a manager before the booking is fixed. That single detail — a fixed hand-over slot — is what makes a morning departure realistic rather than hopeful.
Can you take a rental car from Toronto to Ottawa?
On our side, the practical consequence is simple: plan the return leg as carefully as the outbound one, because a late return is a scheduling question, not a kilometre question.
How delivery and hand-over are arranged
- Address: we bring the car to any address in Toronto — home, hotel or office — and the exact spot is confirmed with a manager beforehand.
- Timing: the delivery date and the hour of hand-over are agreed when the booking is fixed, not left open on the day.
- Fuel: the car arrives clean with a full tank and must go back full; anything missing is charged as set out in the rental agreement.
- Outside the area: delivery beyond our Toronto zone is arranged case by case and is not promised on the site.
What the 62 cars on this page look like
The fleet here runs from a Crossover to a seven-seat SUV, and every one of the 62 cars is automatic. Thirty-one are SUVs, fifteen Crossovers, ten Comfort cars and six Minivans, with five-, seven- and eight-seat layouts and a choice of petrol or hybrid power. Longer bookings follow a fixed rule: a week is charged as the daily rate times six, a month as the daily rate times twenty-one.
Drive time and distance for car rental in Toronto for a trip to Ottawa
What the drive costs in time and fuel
Fill up before you leave — regular petrol sat around C$ 1.75 a litre in October 2026, and the car goes out and comes back full. Two adults with luggage fit a Crossover comfortably; a family of five or more should look at a seven-seat SUV before the drive rather than after.
Picking a car for car rental in Toronto for a trip to Ottawa
Car rental in Toronto for a trip to Ottawa depends on how many people travel, how much luggage comes along and what the roads look like on the day you leave. We hand the car over clean and with a full tank, so the choice really comes down to seats, drivetrain and boot space.
| Class | Cars | Seats | From per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| SUV | 31 | 5, 7, 8 | C$ 58 |
| Crossover | 15 | 5 | C$ 49 |
| Comfort | 10 | 5 | C$ 68 |
| Minivans | 6 | 7, 8 | C$ 68 |
Two adults, a family of eight, or a hybrid
The Buick Encore is the cheapest car on the page at C$ 49 a day — a 1.2 L, 137 hp five-seater with front-wheel drive that handles two people and a weekend bag without complaint.
Documents and licence for car rental in Toronto for a trip to Ottawa
Insurance, ownership permit and the minimum age
Ontario requires every driver to carry insurance for the vehicle and to keep the ownership permit — the original or an exact copy — in the car. The legal minimum age to drive in the province is 16. Those are the rules of the road; the hire side is separate.
Winter conditions for car rental in Toronto for a trip to Ottawa
What changes is how much grip and how much margin you build in before you leave.
Winter tyres and the Quebec rule
Ontario does not require winter tyres, so nothing in the law forces a set onto a car you collect here. Quebec does require them from 1 December to 15 March, but only for cars registered in Quebec, including Quebec-registered rental cars, with a fine for a breach. A car plated in Ontario falls outside that rule even when you cross into Quebec.
Speed limits and alcohol limits you should know
- Highway speed: 110 km/h applies on selected sections of provincial highways instead of the previous 100 km/h — read the signs rather than assume the limit.
- Other roads: limits outside those sections are set by their own signage, so treat 110 km/h as the exception, not the default.
- Warn range: a blood-alcohol reading of 0.05–0.079 brings an immediate 7-day licence suspension, an 8-hour course and a fine on a first occurrence.
- Criminal threshold: from 0.08 (80 mg per 100 ml of blood) the matter becomes a criminal charge, not a roadside penalty.
- Zero tolerance: drivers 21 and under, and holders of G1 or G2 licences, must show zero alcohol.
Fuel and tolls with car rental in Toronto for a trip to Ottawa
Both work on a simple principle here: the fuel rule is fixed and the same for every booking, while who pays anything charged by a road operator is agreed when you book.
Full-to-full fuel and the price of petrol
The car comes clean with a full tank and must go back with a full tank — that is the only fuel option we offer. There is no pre-paid tank and no full-to-empty arrangement on the site, so the arithmetic on the way home is yours to keep: fill up before you hand the keys back. If the tank comes back short, the missing fuel and a refuelling service fee are charged as set out in the rental agreement. Regular petrol was about C$ 1.75 a litre in October 2026 — worth knowing before you pick a model, because all 62 cars on this page run on petrol apart from two hybrids.
Tolls and charges on the road
- Without a transponder: a camera charge applies per trip and a monthly account fee is billed by the operator rather than at a booth.
- Who pays road charges: tolls, zone charges and any penalty notice are not stated in our terms — this is agreed when booking, so raise it with the manager before the trip is fixed.
What is agreed before the booking is fixed
Insurance and the ownership permit travel with the car; carry both. On a longer booking, weekly starts at C$ 294 and monthly at C$ 1,029, and the fuel rule does not change with the length of the rental.
