Three of the four exotic cars are two-seat coupés: Aston Martin Vantage (4.0 L, 510 hp), Ferrari 488 (3.9 L, 670 hp) and Lamborghini Huracán (5.2 L, 610 hp). All three run on Petrol with an Automatic gearbox, and each is priced at ฿35,000 per day. The Vantage and the 488 put their power through the rear wheels, while the Huracán sends it to all four. Two seats means two seats — there is no rear bench to fall back on, and a third passenger simply cannot come along.

Lamborghini Urus and the rest of the fleet by spec

The Urus is the only five-seat car in the class, so it is the one to book when the whole group travels together. Reading the table sideways, the real split is seats and drive: two seats or five, rear-wheel or all-wheel. If your trip includes a run out of town with three or four passengers, the choice makes itself.

Insurance and the rental agreement

Every car we hand over in Bangkok carries compulsory motor insurance, known in Thailand as Por Ror Bor. It is attached to the registered vehicle, not to the driver, and it covers injury to third parties rather than damage to the car itself. First-class (Class 1) insurance is the cover that deals with damage to the vehicle, and its terms, together with the excess, are set out in the agreement you receive when you book. A foreign visitor driving here needs a home driving licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, as required by section 42 bis of the Motor Vehicle Act. Out of town: Pattaya, Hua Hin and the motorway network

The capital is the starting point for the classic self-drive runs, and an exotic car is at its best on the open road rather than in a city crawl. Motorway 7 heads towards Pattaya and Map Ta Phut, and from the Lat Krabang entry a four-wheel car pays ฿25 to Bang Bo, ฿100 to Pong and ฿105 to Pattaya. Motorway 9, the outer ring, uses M-Flow — barrier-free gantries that read the plate and bill afterwards. Fuel, parking and the small print of city driving

All four cars run on Petrol with an Automatic gearbox, which keeps fuel stops simple: the Vantage and the Urus both take a 4.0 L engine, the Huracán a 5.2 L and the Ferrari 488 a 3.9 L, and every one of them is filled with petrol at the pump. Parking at the big malls is generous — CentralWorld gives two hours free, then ฿20 per hour, and ICONSIAM two hours free with ฿30 for the third — while Central Bangna gives six hours free, and Esplanade Ratchada and Central Festival Eastville are free outright. The city's Low Emission Zone applies only to vehicles with six wheels or more, so a Vantage or a Urus is not affected. Because the rates are flat across the class, the choice between a two-seat coupé and the five-seat Urus is about who travels with you, not the bill.
